::Introduction::
Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet... A myriad collection of rainbow flags flew high in the air, standing erect -positioned as a sign of defiance as a local crowd gathered in Greenwich Village to protest against the Chick-Fil-A located there. The controversy surrounding the establishment had been buzzing all over the news recently -with many clamoring resentment against the company for their public stance against gay and lesbian rights. Though it had not been the intention of Adam Jones, his presence in New York had drawn some further attention to the quarrel. Elected as the unofficial 'spokesperson' of gays and lesbians, he'd become expected to speak on their behalf. It was not a fight that he wished to be drawn into -he had far too many of those on his hands already. Yet if there was anything he felt able to freely admit, it was a deep-seeded appreciation for his fans. They were his primary source of support, and in NEW Era that support had been vital in getting him from the doors and into the halls of recognition.
He did not feel it fair to these people that he sat recognized for reasons which were false, but he stood ready to support them just as they had him. He stood ready to ensure that everyone who might face him would know that he was an individual, a man and champion, who did not let things sit idle. So today, on the eve of Vindication, he left his hotel suite early... and went for a chicken sandwich.
::Exposition::
"What do you mean, Raines was checked into the hospital?"
Immediately, Adam realized that answering his phone had been a mistake. He'd been taking some time off, trying to enjoy his night -a rare occasion, with a girl. The girl he'd met previously a few weeks back, setting up equipment for NEW Era. He still had never so much as caught her name, but he felt drawn to her. She was distant, aggressive, and condescending -which drew him closer. In spite of that, they seemed to be having a good time. And then he answered his phone. The worst thing he could have done. Especially when it came bearing news of Kevin Raines.
No news of Raines was ever good news.
"Poisoned? A large tattooed man brought him in?... Oh, God..."
Adam didn't want to hear any more. Hanging up the phone, he shook his head and collapsed against the wall. Drawing in a deep breath, he knew his night had just ended.
"What is it? Is a friend of yours hurt?"
Jones opened his eyes, looking at the woman standing before him. She was a smoking gun, dangerous and beautiful all the same. Fiery red hair and eyes that cut like steel -he wanted nothing more than to take the weekend off and spirit away with her at his side.
"I... I don't know."
He knew Raines was hurt, but that was not what he meant. There were times that he didn't know if he would exactly call Raines a "friend". Truly, Raines was a sympathetic man. A very 'human' soul, prone more to mistake than valor. Adam could relate, Adam could see some of his own mistakes deeply rooted into Raines' character.
Yet, he caused so much misfortune in whatever he did.
"He's my... PR Agent. He was poisoned at a bar. My... opponent, Tombstone, seems to have brought him to the hospital."
The girl rolls her eyes, and he understands why.
"Can't anything be normal with you people?"
This girl, though she may work under the NEW Era banner setting up equipment at events, she had no apparent love for the athletes. And it was easy to see why, he couldn't blame her in the slightest. It was the same problem that he struggled to stand against as an athlete himself.
"Not for everyone, I guess." he answered.
Already, he could make a fairly definite guess as to what actually transpired. Earlier Raines had come to him, asking for permission to 'sabatoge' Tombstone and prevent his opponent from competing at Vindication. Jones had vehemently denied this request, but it seemed as though Raines' request was only a courtesy. Obviously, he had set upon Tombstone regardless. And for whatever reason, his plan had backfired. Clearly, this was not going to bode well for the event. Adam could tell, Tombstone was not without an imagination. It wouldn't take much for Stone to connect the dots between Raines and himself. When he did, he would without doubt come to the wrong conclusion.
Raines was nothing but trouble, at the best of times.
"Everything has to be some kind of scheme, some kind of attention-pull. Is that why we went to the Roller Derby tonight? Hoping to flash me off as some kind of publicity gamble? Add some spice to your image?"
Adam shook his head. He wished he could convince. He wasn't like the others. The men who had attacked Bombtrack, the arrogant chauvinist prick-waving crowd. He was just... himself. And he liked her. He didn't even know her name, but he liked her. That was it. That was all he could ever hope for, with this lifestyle that he chosen for himself. But he couldn't say that. Couldn't explain it.
"I'm... sorry. I should go. Check on him. Do you need a ride home?"
The girl shook her head. Adam felt defeated. There were no more words between them, all Adam could hope for was the chance to see her again. And a shot at redemption, with his honor on the line. To her, and to Tombstone. He felt like... for once... he had something to prove.
::Chick-Fil-A::
There was a lot that he wanted to say. Standing upon a pedestal, the crowd looking at him... he couldn't find the words. His thoughts were racing, and he paused -reminding himself of who he was, where he was, and why he was here. Chick-Fil-A. A crowd of 'fans' all looking to him. Looking to him for a voice. For reason. For resolution.
"We fight battles each and every day... Tough battles. Battles that test us, shape us, and mold our resolve. As a people, we must fight those battles. We must hold our heads up high and face them dead on. It is by doing this, we find our true strength. Never backing down from a challenge. Never yielding an inch to those whom would stand against us.
I stand right here, right now, to tell everyone.... that we are united. All of us. We, a people who may not share common ground. A people who identify under all the colors of the rainbow. A people who have no more reason to share this space than to stand together. I stand with you. Beside you. For you."
Cheers, glitter, and multi-colored balloons applauded his words.
"As an athlete, my opponents have a face. My opponents are Scene-stealers, Messiahs, and Tattooed Landmarks. I find myself in opposition to the posse that would gather together and beat on a defenseless man after he has already given everything. But there are struggles in life which have no face. It is religion, deciding for us who we should be and what we should believe in. It is corporations, telling us what to buy and how to live. It is fast-food establishments, outlawing us for making a choice and denying us fair privilege. In the end, it doesn't matter if your enemy has a face or remains without. Each of us needs the strength to stand against them. Alone, we may not have enough. But we are never alone. And our enemies would do well to remember that. To the posse, I promise retribution. To the individuals, I plant myself firmly at the ready. And to the faceless, I present you. Each and every one of you has the ability necessary to make a change. You are not without power. None of us are. Together we have a power that none can hold sovereignty over. We are the invincible. We are the tested. We are together.
I am humbled, to speak today. I never asked to become the icon that I am. And I must thank you for all of the support. Never forget what you stand for. I never will. I am a Champion of NEW Era Wrestling. And I intend to be for a long time. If anyone wants to test that, I welcome it. No one should ever mistake that. I welcome any challenge. I welcome all adversity. I welcome those who would test my strength. And I will overcome it. Just like, one day, you will overcome this blatant prejudice. This day is for you. This Championship I hold, it's for you. My match at Vindication, it's for you. When you fight, when I fight... we do so with pride. Pride, unyielding. A strength that can not be taken away..."
Cheers. Glitter. Rainbows.
