"You're a really kind man. It's very rare for a complete stranger to accompany someone else to the hospital like this. Are you sure you don't want to talk to him?"
Tombstone keeps his eyes on the paperwork on the counter in front of him. Nurses and doctors buzz past him as he reads the papers, a written statement of what had happened at the bar. A fan, a man named Kevin Raines he learned later, had sat down next to him and, after very few words, bought them a round of Guinness. They toasted, or rather Kevin Raines toasted Tombstone, and drank their drinks. The Raines man was only halfway through his beer when his eyes rolled back into his head. It was apparent very quickly from that moment that he was being hit by more than the beer. A moment later, Tombstone was catching Raines before he crumpled all the way to the floor.
And now, here he was, standing at a hospital desk, looking over a statement of what exactly had happened. He signs the second page, setting the pen down and sliding the papers to the desk clerk, a chubby little brunette woman in her early forties. She smiles as he stares down at her, nodding her head.
"So should I make a call up? I'm sure Mr. Raines would be happy to know you've been here the whole time."
Tombstone shakes his head, tipping his top hat up a little.
"Zat vill not be necessary. Zee doktor sait he vould be fine. Gut for me."
The desk clerk's smile lowers a little, as she shrugs her shoulders and picks up the papers. Tombstone tips his hat, turning away from the desk and walking to the exit. This wasn't how he wanted to end his night, but it was certainly different from his typical one. He actually helped someone instead of putting them in their place. He didn't care much for talking to Raines though. The man in just a few short moments proved to be an annoyance. But not an annoyance that was deserving of what seemed like death.
At least not yet anyway.
The big man stuffs his hands into his trench coat pockets as he walks through the sliding doors at the entrance. In the distance, he sees a red headed woman wearing a bandanna, followed closely by two men. She sees him too, their eyes locking. She looked oddly familiar to him, like he had seen her somewhere before. His eyes travel to one of the men behind her, seeing he's carrying a camera. Her eyes light up as she turns to the men behind her, never taking her eyes off him. He suddenly remembered where he had seen her before.
Woman: "Hey, look at this! I bet he'll know if he's here!"
Isabel Marie. One of NEWera's interviewers. She and the two men approach Tombstone quickly, stopping him dead in his tracks. She smiles confidently at him, nodding her head to the hospital.
Isabel Marie: "So is he in there?"
Tombstone, slightly puzzled, shakes his head.
Tombstone: "Who?"
Isabel Marie: "The Good Doctor! Adam Jones! We caught wind that he might be here. People have been wanting to talk to him all week. I want to be the first."
Tombstone smirks, never breaking his gaze.
Tombstone: "Vhy vould he be here? Did he try to hang himself before Sunday?"
Isabel crosses her arms, pursing her lips.
Isabel Marie: "Somebody's confident."
Tombstone: "More like... determined."
Isabel Marie: "Uh huh. Well, I'm sorry to say that's not the reason he'd be here. We heard his manager, Kevin Raines, was hospitalized earlier tonight. Figured it'd be a good way to catch Adam and get a few quick words with him."
Tombstone's smirk instantly fades at the mention of Raines' name. He tips his hat up, crossing his own arms.
Tombstone: "His manager?"
Isabel Marie: "Yeah, about a half hour ago, we heard he was rushed from some bar here to Lutheran Medical Center a few hours ago. So did you see Jones in there?"
Tombstone shakes his head, his mind on Raines. Isabel's face scrunches up, a flash of disappointment in her eyes.
Isabel Marie: "Huh... So what are you doing here?"
Tombstone: "Visitink a friend."
Isabel Marie: "A friend, huh? Do we know this friend?"
Tombstone simply stares at her, unblinking. She looks at her companions, the silence becoming awkward. She smiles, pointing to the man with the camera.
Isabel Marie: "OK, well, if we don't know this friend or TGD isn't here, how about we get a few words with you? I'm sure you've got a few things to say about Sunday."
Tombstone shakes his head, turning back around.
Tombstone: "I do hafe sometink to say. But not to you."
He begins walking back into the hospital, Isabel calling out to him.
Isabel Marie: "HEY! Where you going?"
He doesn't answer, the sliding doors opening up and air conditioning hitting him across his face. He looks straight ahead to the desk clerk he was talking to earlier. He had suddenly changed his mind about talking to Kevin Raines.
-----
He felt like shit. His eyelids were droopy, IVs stuck in his arms, pumping him full of fluids. But he was breathing. He was still alive. And because of that, he just barely managed a cocky smile.
Kevin Raines laid comfortably in his hospital bed, looking to put this night behind him and go to sleep. The doctors had told him they got him just in time. He was barely listening as the doctor spoke to him, catching something about poison and that he could have died. No shit. He was there. He knew what he was feeling. All he wanted to know was how long he was going to be there. Luckily, it was only going to be a couple days at the most as they monitored him. Then, he just had to take it easy for a week or two. Yeah, like he was going to do that. He was already feeling better than he did when he was at the bar. But still...
He felt like shit.
He hears a knock on his door. He looks over lazily, seeing a nurse smiling at him.
Nurse: "Hey, just letting you know we got a call and you're going to have a visitor in a few minutes. He's on his way up right now."
Raines smiles, weakly nodding his head. The nurse returns the smile and walks away. Raines chuckles. It could only be one person. Adam must have heard about what happened and wanted to check on him. He should have known. After all, he was one of the most important people in his life. Maybe even the most. TGD's career wouldn't be much without Kevin Raines by his side.
For a few moments, he sits there, eyes closed, already planning on what he's going to do when he gets out of the hospital when he hears another knock at his door. He smiles to himself, his eyes still closed.
Kevin Raines: "Jonesy! I knew you'd come and see me. What the fuck took you so long?"
He opens his eyes, looking to the door. Instead of Adam Jones, the big hulking shape of Tombstone stares back at him. Raines' face grows even more paler. This was unexpected. Tombstone removes his top hat, walking into the room.
Tombstone: "Sie sind ein glücklicher Mensch."
Beads of sweat form on Raines' brow, his bed suddenly feeling warmer than it really was. Tombstone removes his hat, walking into the room. He drags a chair to the bed, the metal legs scraping on the tile floor. Tombstone sits down, placing his hat on the bed.
Tombstone: "That means you are a lucky man. Zee doktor sait you vould have died if you did not get here any sooner. I vould hate for a fan of mine to die bekause they sharet a drink vith me. Vould you agree?"
Raines simply nods, his mind blank. He was feeling very uneasy. Tombstone was one of the last people he wanted to see. It was supposed to be him in this bed. But Kevin Raines was too slick for his own good and laced his own drink by accident. Tombstone smirks at him, leaning comfortably back in his chair. The tattooed teeth on his face form their own twisted smile as he stares at him with his cold blue eyes.
Tombstone: "So are you feelink better? You look a little better. Your eyes are open now. You are also breathing. Zat is a gut sign. Zat doktor... he vas a gut one, vasn't he?"
Raines nods again, Tombstone mimicking him. Raines sits up in his bed, licking his lips as his mind races to come up with something.
Kevin Raines: "Yeah... Yeah! Great doctor! That was crazy. I'm glad you were there. I owe you my life...?"
Tombstone chuckles, leaning forward. The chair creaks underneath him, his smile as gone just as quickly as it was there. Raines feels his heart skip a beat. Maybe he was going to have a heart attack. Or maybe he was about to have a seizure. He'd take either one right about now.
Tombstone: "So... Vhy?"
Any second now, he would be clutching at his chest, nurses rushing in to revive him and give him mouth to mouth. Any second now... Any second...
Fuck.
Kevin Raines: "Why what?"
Faking a heart attack crossed his mind. But that wouldn't work. Or would it? Before he could make up his mind, Tombstone shakes his head, disappointed.
Tombstone: "I know who you are. I know you manage Adam Jones. And I sink I know vat happenet tonight. Vould you like to hear vat I sink?"
Raines freezes up even more, the thought of faking a heart attack quickly dissipating. Tombstone smiles, nodding his head.
Tombstone: "Gut, gut! You see, ven I learnt who you vere, I began to sink zat tonight vas not simply a... vat is zee vord... koincidence? Ja, a koincidence. It vould seem to me somebody does not vant me at Vindication. And do you know who I sink zat is?"
Raines shakes his head, still thinking he'd be able to find a way out of this. His career was flashing before his eyes. He could literally feel his heart breaking. All his money...
Tombstone: "I sink Adam Jones does not vant me there. I sink Adam Jones is villink to do anythink to keep zat championship of his. So, he sends his veak little man manager to poison me. Is zis korrect?"
Raines stares at the tattooed face of Tombstone, his mind once again drawing a blank. Tombstone smiles, nodding his head.
Tombstone: "Zat is vat I sought. Zat is a shame. I sought he vas an honorable kompetitor. But... I have been wrong before. But I assure you, he has nothing to vorry about. And neither do you. I sink you have pait your price for zis, no? And Adam Jones? He vill pay on Sunday. So you tell Herr Doktor zis for me; The death zat you nearly experienced tonight vas not for you. It is for him. It is for his championship. His days of wearing zat belt are goink to be over in just a kouple of short days. I vill take vat he vill do anythink to keep. And zere is nothink he kan do to keep it. Keine Spiele. Zis is not a game to me."
Tombstone stands up, picking up his hat and putting it on his head. He nods to Raines, silently turning and walking back to the door. Raines watches him, now sweating profusely, realizing he may have just made the worst mistake of his life. He stops in the door way, turning back slightly, Raines unable to tear his eyes away from him.
Tombstone: "Tod ist unsere Endrettung. Und er wird Rettung am Sonntag brauchen."
He exits the room, leaving Raines alone with his thoughts. The first thing he thought of was calling Adam. But he didn't know how he was going to explain this. He was just trying to ensure that his client left Vindication with his title intact. Now... the future was murky. Tombstone thought Adam had sent Raines to incapacitate him. This couldn't bode well for The Good Doctor. Not in the slightest.
