1. A Celebration
May 27th, 2012. The Capital FM Arena
"Ladies and gentlemen, here is your winner and the NEW NEWera Television Champion... TGD!!!"
When Penny Lane spoke those words, Adam could hardly believe it. Even now holding the NEWera TV Championship, Adam was gripped in disbelief. He could hear his music playing, he could see the crowd clap and chant his name -he could even see the flamers in the audience lose it and make an attempt at throwing him their underwear. But it all seemed like it was too much. Was this really happening?
On the outside, his father and Kevin Raines were ecstatic. They made their way into the ring and threw his hands up in celebration. They were saying something to Adam, but he couldn't hear them. He could barely hear anything, caught up in the moment like this. He'd been here for almost a year to the date now. Several times he'd come inches away from having the opportunity to hold a title, but those moments had always eluded him. And now here it was, a year later -and he was the NEWera TV Champion.
Kevin Raines whispered into his ear, "How does it feel, Champ?"
Adam looked at the title in his hands. Nikki Blaine's title. All he wanted to do was pass out.
"Like I got my ass handed to me."
Adam smiles, his celebration drawing to a close. Raines nods, and with the assistance of Adam's father -they help TGD get backstage. It's a long walk up the ramp, and Adam feels every inch of it. When he's finally backstage, Matt Starr is there to greet him.
"Congratulations, old friend. You deserve it."
Starr extends his hand, and Adam nods at his old friend. They'd known each other since the early days, when Adam had first started wrestling over at Supreme Wrestling. Through thick and thin, they'd been through a lot together. It really meant something that Starr was the one to congratulate him now.
"Thanks. Let's hope I get to defend it against you, sometime."
Starr nods, then backs away as Kevin and Patrick guide TGD through the halls to his dressing room. They pass the mess hall, seeing Fat Cobra stuffing himself with the entire line of food and wine. Cobra nods in their direction, then goes back to his food. Finally, they arrive at TGD's room.
"God. I could just lay in bed for the next two weeks and call it good. Wildebeest really brought his game."
Adam makes it the bench and sits his ass down, finally loosening up a little. His body feels wrecked, still feeling each every bump he took in the last match. He remembers vividly how much he's struggled in the past trying to handle the pain that comes with being a professional wrestler. It's easy to see now why some people just couldn't handle it.
"You okay, son? Need me to call someone?"
Adam shakes his head. "I'll be fine. Just gonna hit the showers, take a nice long rest, and go from there. Nothing a big glass of orange juice and a little morning workout tomorrow won't cure."
"Are you kidding me?"
Kevin Raines' face says it all. He's flabbergasted, refusing to accept Adam's sentiment.
"You're the New Era TV Champion!!! Yeah, you might have got rocked a little out there but you're a professional wrestler god dammit! And you're still young! You can handle it! Fuck the shower and sleep! Tonight... we party!"
"Kevin, I really don't..."
Raines wasn't having it.
"You, shut up. Don't worry about a thing. I promise, by the time the night is over you'll be feeling like a million bucks. Now just sit back and let the world's best PR Agent take care of you."
If he'd had the energy, Adam would have shut Raines down right then and there. Sent him scampering to wherever it was Raines scampered to. But Adam was wiped out. He couldn't have argued with Raines if he wanted to.
And so... less than an hour later, Adam found himself unwillingly dragged along to the NG1 Nightclub in downtown Nottingham. There, Raines had somehow managed to book a private room for a little after-party celebration.
"Alright, guys. Tonight, we get wasted. Trashed. Shitfaced. Absolute so punch-drunk crazy that we lose papa Jones and end up spending the next two weeks looking for him in some crazy adventure with Asian mobsters until we remember we actually locked him in on the roof the whole time."
"I swear to God, Raines... if this is some gay club, I will kill you."
Kevin Raines simply smiles, and pats his client on the back in reassurance.
"Relax, buddy. Tonight is all about you. So let's have some fun, eh Champ?"
Patrick Jones holds up a glass, old fashioned whiskey, and brings in a toast.
"You have to admit, a night of fun might do you some good. So... to here's to you, my son. There has never been a moment when I have not been the absolute most proud father in the world watching you grow into the man that you are. You are the best son a father could ask for. You are my best friend, and I am honored to be sitting next to you tonight. So... let's get drunk, eh Adam?"
Adam shook his head, and smiled. His father, encouraging him to get drunk and piss the night away. It was not his father's nature, and neither was it his... but it oddly felt right. So, in turn, Adam raised his glass, and clashed it against his father's.
"To me, I guess. And NEW era. And Nikki Blaine, who should have been able to defend this title proper. Hopefully I won't be stripped of the belt it in similar fashion."
The three of them took their drinks and finished the first round quickly. Adam had to admit, it felt good. At that moment, Hollywood Undead's "Comin' in Hot" hit the stereo system, the door opened and a host of women wearing slutty nurse uniforms walked into the room.
"Uh...?"
Kevin Raines was beaming from ear to ear.
"This one is on me, Champ."
More drinks came. The slutty nurses walked over to Adam and Patrick, two of them each taking a seat on the Jones' laps. The nurse leaned in close, whispering as she bit onto Adam's ear.
"I hear you're having a celebration..."
The night had officially begun. Women dressed as nurses flooded the room as the stereo turned up, and more drinks came. Hours passed and the night faded into a blur as the morning came. Adam would scarcely remember any of it, never knowing how exactly they made it back to the hotel that night.
The morning came, and Adam could tell he'd had too much to drink. The TV title laying above his chest, he looked around and saw two of the girls from the last night sleeping next to him. The rest of the room was trashed. He could barely move, sore from the match and utterly defeated by the alcohol consumed since. Curiously, a monkey was staring at him from the headboard. Confused, Adam looked over and saw his dad sleeping on the couch with another nurse from the night resting her head on his lap. Kevin Raines was slumped against the bathroom door.
"Raines?"
No response.
"Raines!"
Again.
"RAINES!"
Kevin Raines finally stirred, looking up at Adam with a look of bewilderment etched onto his face.
"Yo! Boss dude! No need to yell, man."
"What the hell happened?"
Kevin Raines smiled sheepishly, dragging himself up to his feet.
"A good fucking time, that's what. Oh, by the way. Don't go into the bathroom. There may or may not be a tiger in there."
Adam tried to get up so that he could slap Kevin clear across the room. He found himself unable to move.
"God... I hate you. As soon as I can get up you're getting your ass kicked."
"As soon as you can get up I think you have other things to get ready for..."
Adam didn't feel like getting ready for anything. Right now, he just wanted to sleep and wake up in a couple of years or something.
"Like what? I can't think of anything more important than kicking your ass..."
Raines stumbled over, smiling. Finally he collapsed at the edge of Jones' bed and slapped his client on the face.
"Come on, Jonesy. You that forgetful? London. The Brawl."
Suddenly, it all came back to Adam.
"Oh. Right. That."
2. Back in the Game
London. England.
A few days had passed now, and TGD still wasn't quite used to being a Champion of NEWera.
Thankfully, most of his time had been spent travelling and recovering from his last match with The Wildebeest. His body still ached a little, Wildebeest had manhandled him quite fiercely. But he was nearly back to feeling like his regular self, and at the very least he was comfortable in getting back into the swing of things. Starting his morning early, Adam jogged around the streets of London in the quiet twilight hours before the sun came up. It felt good, even though the air had been a little chilly for his liking.
Even with two weeks at his disposal, it didn't feel like enough time to prepare. The London Brawl was going to be huge. There was a lot of heavy competition headed his way. His only reprieve was that Jihad and Travis Blaine hadn't scheduled him to defend his new title yet. Thank God for small mercies.
With the sun up, and morning getting well underway, Adam stopped at a small cafe for some breakfast. He had no idea where he'd go from here, or how he'd prepare for the London Brawl in the coming weeks. Truth was, there was no right or wrong way to do it. There was only so much he really could do in the end. When it came down to it, it was do or die. The Brawl itself would be the deciding factor. Until then... one day at a time, that's the way he was going to have to play it.
"Mr. Jones. Fancy seeing you here."
Adam spun around, an egg sandwich nearly flying out of his hand. The voice belonged to Isabel Marie -interviewer for NEWera.
"Isabel. Uh... hi."
Isabel stepped forward, ordering a sandwich of her own.
"Relax. I wasn't following you. I just happened to be out for breakfast."
Adam shook his head, trying to retain composure.
"Oh, no. It's cool. I was just out running and stuff. Getting ready for the event. Got hungry. You know..."
Isabel smiled.
"It's going to be a doozy, that's for sure. Congratulations on winning the title, by the way."
"Yeah, thanks..."
An awkward silence passed between them. Adam recalls his last interview with Isabel, after he'd just eluded his "fanboys" and she'd unwittingly stumbled in on him after he'd just gotten out of the shower. Amused, he looks at her and smirks with a coy grin.
"So... how about an interview? This time with the clothes on."
Isabel looks at him and nods with enthusiasm.
"Oh yeah, that sounds fantastic. Uh... give me an hour to call in the crew and set it up. "
Adam nods.
"Sounds good to me."
The hour passed. Adam waited at the edge of the waterfront, looking out into the water. He wished he were brave enough to dare a swim in the cold waters. Finally, Isabel was ready with her team.
"Alright... and in 3... 2...1... Hello everyone, this is Isabel Marie reporting in with The Good Doctor himself, Adam Jones. TGD, how does it feel to be the newly crowned Television Champion?"
Adam smiles, taking the microphone in his hand.
"It's... a little jarring, to be honest. And very humbling. Not something I expected, that's for sure. My goal right now is to bring further prestige to this title and my name. With the belt around my waist, I have a lot of opportunity presenting itself to really cement my career here at NEWera. And I want to be the fighting champion. I want to take on the best and brightest. Bring them all on, and let me show everyone that this title is worth holding onto."
"Well, when Nikki Blaine comes back she'll definitely be on the top of the list of contenders with the right to challenge you for the title."
"And she should be. No one beat her for this title, after all. I certainly didn't. And it's no secret that she's one of the most talented wrestlers on the NEWera roster. Defending the title against her would be a privilege. And if I can beat her? Well, then no one would be able to criticize my legitimacy as a force to be reckoned with in NEWera."
"It was certainly a tough match to watch between you and Wildebeest. I don't think anyone could take you lightly after that."
"You have to hand it to The Wildebeest. I asked him to bring his best game, and he certainly did. If he can establish himself away from MPG and as a force on his own, he could really go far in NEWera. This match was definitive proof of that."
"Speaking of establishing yourself... The London Brawl."
"Yes. This is a match that could really make someone's career."
"The London Brawl was your first PPV, last year, correct? What are your hopes for this year, now that you've been in NEWera for a decent amount of time?"
"You know... last year, The London Brawl was an overwhelming event for me to face. I was still just coming onto the scene, and didn't really have a clue about the competition that NEWera offered. Somehow, I managed to make it until the final seven before I was eliminated by Dean Jones. A lot has changed in that time since. I feel I've really grown into myself in the past year, and I think that the audience and other competitors have begun to see that. I'm not the type to head in, head half-cocked with a promise to win it all. But it's going to be interesting. Like always, I'm going to gun it as hard as I can. Last year, I made it to the final seven, and I'm ten times the wrestler today that I was then. Can I go I all the way this time? It's possible, and I'm eager to find out."
"Anything you're particularly focused on, entering the Brawl?"
"Of course. There are those I have obvious history with. MPG, for example. I've been fighting with him and his friends for weeks now. They're not the people that I want to see last too long in this competition. Wildebeest in particular will likely have an issue with me concerning his recent defeat, and I'm really going to have to keep an eye out for him. Then there are guys that I'm just not comfortable with making it too far in the competition. Like Jimmy Helmsley. I guarantee you that he's a guy that you want to take out as soon as possible. You leave him in for too long and he'll take advantage of every opportunity he can to take the cheapest way to victory. It's no secret he has support from MPG, so you can't count on him to keep the competition fair and legit.
Then you have James Stall, public enemy number one. There's no telling what you'll get with him. If he loses his match against Romeo and Outkast? The guy will be even more unhinged, and likely to cut down anyone in his path on a rampage. We all saw what he did with Nikki. This is a man that no one wants to cross paths with. Thankfully, he'll probably be the focus of a lot of attention down in that ring. Romeo in particular has good cause to keep his focus on Stall. Fact is, the numbers are against him. He's made a lot of enemies with his actions. But I wouldn't count on that alone. I wouldn't put it past him to bring the sledgehammer into the ring and start mauling people left and right, regardless of the consequences. You ask me, he should be barred from the competition altogether. But that decision isn't up to me. If he crosses my path in the ring, though, you can be sure I'll take it upon myself to make sure he doesn't walk out the winner."
"A lot of people have been talking about Spencer, and his actions, lately. Do you think he's worth the same attention Stall has been receiving?"
"Definitely. He's really been making waves lately, and not the good kind. More than most, I can't afford to dismiss him. Not when he's made threats that include attacking the new NEWera TV Champion -which is now me. I've made it clear that people like him -bullies, that try to twist and control the competition in their favor, are guys that I stand firmly against. When an asshole like Spencer comes in and starts attacking people left and right, it grabs my attention. If I'm in the ring and it comes between taking the chance to eliminate him or to take Robbie Priest out? Then I'm going for Spencer.
My real attention though, what I'm really focused on... What everyone is probably waiting to see, is the Doc Holiday and RAW. Like a lot of people, I don't like RAW. He's an asshole. He took out Troy Turner in the cheapest way possible and lucked into winning the World Title. But he's proven himself. I think that in spite of what some might say, he's a very talented wrestler. And if anyone denies that, they're either lying or stupid. Doc Holiday challenging him for the title is one of the most intriguing moves I've seen. They've been friends and comrades, and now -who knows what kind of effect this match will have. They've played off like it's cool, but who knows how RAW will react if Doc Holiday does beat him. And then, whoever loses, is then entered into the London Brawl. So that could be a game changer right there. And whichever one of them does enter into the Brawl, you can bet they'll be carrying a head full of steam -the defeat only fueling them further to win the brawl."
Obviously, I'm not going to stand here and address everyone. It's really anyone's game. There are a lot of newer athletes that have come recently and really shown that they have a lot of talent, moreso even than some of the established athletes on the roster. Jason Scene, Ace Marshall, XXX? Those guys have torn it up. Can't say I think they're the most upstanding of gentlemen, but they've certainly shown a good degree of aptitude in the ring. But for me... this represent more of things coming full circle. Last year, as I said, I'd just barely gotten my start in NEWera when the London Brawl came around. Now I'm here, I'm a Champion, and I'm not going anywhere. I can't promise I'll win this thing. But I promise I'll do as I've always done. I promise I'll do what I did when I beat The Wildebeest and won the TV Championship. I will stand for myself. I will stand against the people who cheapen this competition. And I will do my damndest to fight to the very end. No matter what. I owe it to NEWera, as the new TV Champion, to represent the best and brightest this federation offers. No more, no less."
Isabel Maries nods, looking back at the cameras.
"Strong words from the NEW Champion. I for one look forward to your performance, and hope the best for you. Let's see you do even better than you did last year, and make it to the end."
"One can only hope."
Full Circle, indeed.
