Don't aim for success if you want it; just do what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally.-David Frost

Intimidating.

That was the adjective Nathan Turnbull settled on, as he stared at the O2 Arena from the laptop on his table at the Las Iguanas. The O2 was intimidating. But Nathan was sure the circumstances didn't help. The biggest arena he'd ever performed in...and the biggest stakes he'd ever performed for. 56 competitors would collide in one ring for a shot at the most coveted championship in the world of professional wrestling. Quite...intimidating, for a 24 year old, 8 year veteran of the game.

And it wasn't like these were just any 55 opponents he had. Outkast, Jimmy Helmsley... men who were
the standard bearers of the NEWera brand. Chris Rollz, a man who cared so deeply about this opportunity that he had timed his return for this show. No doubt, he had been shaping his body and mind for some time, with this match in mind. Eight people;Brittney, Brandi, Noah Hanson, Lance Peterson, William Jones, Switchblade, Andy Lebeau, and Lenard Limoux, had come from other companies at their own risk: from what Nathan heard, they weren't covered for health insurance because they didn't have deals with the company. But they were willing to risk that, risk everything, all for this one opportunity.

The next stars. The “safe picks”. Romeo Stylez, James Stall, Spencer Riggs. Even Zoe McDraven, who inspired an entire fanbase to “believe”...without giving them all that much to believe in. These people were supposed to be one magical night away from stardom, and June the 10th could very well be that night. There could indeed be a new era in this company if one of these should win.

And then there was the majority. Recent arrivals. Veterans in a slump. Tag team guys for whom this might be their only shot at singles stardom. The forgotten, the faded, the unsung and those for whom the song had long been sung. Nathan Turnbull stood among these. Only recently had he captured his first NEWera win, doing his best to kick Tucker Mann's face off of his head. He was very much aware of the fact that this might be his one big shot at the big time. If he didn't make good... there might not be a whole lot of others.

All of this ran through his mind as he asked for a refill on his Coke... but it didn't run for long.

Oh, no. This...this couldn't be. Not here. Not now. Not when he'd tried so hard to put the memory away forever. He had a successful international wrestling career, and a loving girlfriend... So why was Rebecca Vega walking over to his table?

SHE WAS WALKING TO HIS TABLE?!?

Nathan's brain went into Defcon 1. Shit, shit, shit! Could he get out of there...aw, fuck, he was trapped.

Now, don't misunderstand Nathan's reaction. Becky Vega was an AMAZING girl. The kind that could make the cover of Forbes and Maxim. Her dad's company, Vegabond Industries, was among the top stocks in the world. The moment they'd gone public, back in 2000, everyone involved with the company, right down to the secretarial pool, became millionaires. Becky had been a privileged child, but showed off exactly why in the classroom. Nathan was smart, Becky was utterly brilliant. As in, never had to do homework because invariably, she'd have done it in class while everybody else was busy nodding off. She was skipped a year after fourth grade, putting her in Nathan's sixth grade class.

She'd been offered grade skips after that (in fact, every year), but she always elected to stay where she was. The reason for that sat one desk across from her and two up in every class: Nathan Turnbull. She'd later admit that she'd had a crush on him at first sight. They kissed for the first time at Nathan's 13th birthday bash... and the romance of St. Sebastian's Prep was on. They stood, ostensible king and queen of the school, through everything: homecomings, student council (as president and VP for two straight years), fundraisers, dances, their friends' breakups... They lived a life together. Everyone knew about it, and everyone expected him to propose one day, and them to get married, be happy, and live happily ever after.

And it was going to be like that, all right...then Nathan started training for wrestling. Becky had been supportive, though she hated how, invariably, he'd end up with a veritable shrub maze of bumps, bruises, and small scars on the days after training. Still, he powered through without much complaint, so she had very little to say. Things continued this way for his time in training. And then, when Coach D'Amore, as his students liked to call him, decided Nathan was ready for the ring... it was like a dream. He went for a few months of Saturday night shows, and always seemed to win. That lasted until the one night that would set a course for his career. May 23rd, 2007.

The challenger for the planned BCW Can-Am Heavyweight Championship match had been detained at the American border for whatever reason. Scott decided that a 15 man battle royal would happen, and the winner would get the slot. Nathan won, and walked into the biggest fight of his 17 years. After a 23 minute war, Nathan Turnbull sidestepped a missile dropkick, grabbed his opponent's legs, and twisted him into a Sharpshooter. Three sweet sounds entered Nathan's consciousness within the next ten seconds: the sound of his opponent tapping the mat in submission, the ring of the bell, and the massive, elated roar of the crowd. He was handed the Can-Am Heavyweight Title, and tearfully celebrated with it.

Becky was brought into the ring, and forgoing her expensive clothes, she ran into a tight, emotional hug from her boyfriend. And as one big final moment, Nathan emulated the final moments of WrestleMania IV, putting the belt on her shoulder and lifting her up onto his, to the crowd's strong approval. It was the greatest moment of his life.

Fast forward to August, 2007. The beginning of the end of Nathan Turnbull's beautiful life with Becky Vega. Eager to advance in his dream career, he hadn't even thought about the consequences when he agreed to go over to Japan. But they sunk in, and fast. Life as he knew it...was done. No more Windsor. No more being rich, enjoying life, without too many cares. And most of all...no more Becky. He hadn't wanted to leave her, and almost couldn't bear hurting her. But he had. He'd hurt somebody that meant everything to him, because wrestling meant more. In the nearly five years since that devastating day, he experienced varying levels of regret at his choice.

And so he threw himself into the mistress that had stolen his life. He put everything into wrestling, until he could bear it no longer. And then, in February, he'd gotten together with Alissa LaCroix. She gave his life meaning, purpose, soul. He was no longer a man who wrestled just to wrestle. He was a man who wrestled because it was the greatest expression of the emotion that ran through him. It was like she'd opened a long dormant faucet. And he was truly happy again.

But now... He hadn't seen Becky since that day. Could he bear it? Was she going to give him the slap he probably deserved? Was she going to detail to him exactly how much he hurt her? Time was running out... Oh, God, she was sitting down at his table....she was...smiling?

Becky: Hi, Nate. It's been a while.

Nathan gulped, and managed to stammer out...

Nathan: Y-yeah.

Becky: You seem anxious. Is it...me?

Nathan sighs.

Becky: So, it is.

She takes a thoughtful pause.

Becky: Nathan...I forgive you. You did what you thought you had to do back then. And yeah, I missed you. I missed us. I still do, every day. But you know what comforts me, when I get sad about what we were, what we lost? Flipping on NEW Friday Night. Or NEW Generation. Or NEW TV. And when I see you out there, I know in my heart that you're living your dream. How can I begrudge that to you?[/i]

Nathan has to smile at that. Becky, sweet, sweet Becky, was putting him first, the way she had never failed to do.

Nathan: Thank you, you blessed angel, you. I always wondered what I did that was good enough for God to send you.

Becky blushes deeply, her face momentarily matching her hair, a shade that resembled red velvet cupcakes in a way that had always made Nathan smile. He used to make her a red velvet cupcake every year for her birthday, July 6th, as a blithe poke.

Nathan: So what brings you to Sheffield?

Becky: I'm doing marketing for my dad now. I had a presentation at the university, so I came down to Las Iguanas for a late dinner, it's not too far. What about you? Aren't you supposed to be in Nottingham?

Nathan: I am. I just had to get out of the area for a bit, clear my head. NEW is chaos these days. I've got one coworker who was dating another, when another guy who had stolen the first guy's title admitted his love for the first guy's girlfriend...which, in a very confusing chain of events, led to the girlfriend getting brained with a sledgehammer supposedly meant for her mentor, who just happened to be the guy she really wanted.

Becky: I see your confusion.

Nathan: And now...we've got two guys, unaffiliated with each other, roaming the back and randomly assaulting innocent people... the main bully faction seemingly splitting at the seams...friend against friend in the back...

Becky: All that seems certain is more chaos.

Nathan: Seems so. At least I have Alissa.

Nathan smiles wistfully at the thought of his girlfriend. Surprisingly enough, so does Becky.

Becky: She is... pretty gorgeous. I like her.

Nathan: Wait, you...no. No! I am not having this conversation with my ex-girlfriend about my current girl...

He trails off, seemingly mentally visualizing the two girls together. And it doesn't seem to be something he minds whatsoever. He even starts to get into it a bit before Becky abruptly snaps him out of his stupor.

Becky: You were thinking about it, weren't you?

Nathan:*waaaaay too quickly* No!

Becky: You WERE! Awwwww... Still the same sweet boy I left five years ago.

She can't help but chuckle, and he can't help but join in.

Becky: Well, let's get off of that awkward subject. Let's do something together tonight! Betrayal is playing at the Crucible Theatre. Supposed to be good. Why don't we go?

Nathan: Because...I should go back, get some sleep, write some poetry, work out, take up Valium addiction, bash my head in with a pipe... something that'd preserve my current relationship. I owe it to Alissa to do right by her...I let her get kidnapped, I didn't act when I knew RAW was hurting her, even the start of our relationship...was me taking advantage of her. Becky, I can't hurt her anymore. And me going and doing this...

Becky: Nathan. None of those things were your fault! You can't blame yourself for every bad thing that happens to her. Sometimes...things just happen. And in any case, it's all in the past, now. There's nothing you can do to change it. All you can do is be you... the guy she fell for. The guy I fell for.

Nathan: Only problem is...now you're here, back in my life. And...I don't know. I love Alissa, but... I feel like you and I...have more to do. I didn't want to end it when I did.

Becky: Well...why don't we take it slow? Talk to Alissa when you get the chance, she seems to be a pretty rational person. And in the meantime... you're taking me to the theatre.

Nathan grins.

Nathan: How do you know that?

Becky sticks out her tongue at him.

Becky: Because you can't seem to say no to me. You never could.

Nathan smiles, shaking his head, and signals a waiter for the check.
