Many people have asked what I was thinking when I challenged Bombtrack to a Prison Cell match. I had everything going for me before that moment. I was competing for the World Heavyweight Championship with five of the best superstars that New Era Wrestling had to offer. Instead, I was worrying about a past foe and the terror he had been causing others. It’s well known that I have a bad time getting my priorities in straight.
A Prison Cell match is one of the rare few matches that I have never gotten to compete. It’s possibly one of the most dangerous match types because nobody ever has the nerve to take part in one. From my recollection, only Punisher and Maynard Queens are the only men who have ever gone that far in a rivalry. Punisher won the championship and Maynard Queens was never seen again. That’s how dangerous this match could be, possibly a career ender.
I have to be ready for this match. For me to make it to the championship main event, I have to defeat Bombtrack. I have to stop his reign of terror in this company. And seeing that I have never competed in this match type, I have to talk to one of the two men that have competed. I have to get insight that Bombtrack won’t have in this match. I have to win this match, for everyone’s sake in this company.
December 3, 2011 Atlanta, Georgia
It had been a long time since I have been to Atlanta for something other than a show. In all reality, this is the place that I got started. My first wrestling company was based out of Atlanta. If it weren’t for that company giving me the shot, then I might not be standing here right now with the success I have had in my career.
Standing outside the house of Punisher, I thought about many things. This man had done everything he could have done in his career and retired at a young age. From the look of his house, he did pretty well for himself. Lately, I have been wondering if that is the right path to go down. I don’t think there is a better moment than going out on top. As I went to knock, the door opened and one of the men I looked up to as a superstar learning the ropes was standing in front of me.
Punisher: It’s been a long time.
We shook hands with one another.
Jimmy Helmsley: You’ve been off the grid for years. I’m surprised I was actually able to get in touch with you.
Punisher: I’m a man who enjoys his privacy. When my wrestling career ended, I needed time alone. I’m finally at peace with everything.
Punisher was a multiple time world champion. He was respected by everyone he worked with and then some. After his prison cell match with Maynard Queens, he was never the same guy again. That match changed him and his career. He was in guilt for the longest time.
Jimmy Helmsley: I’m glad to hear it, my friend. If anyone deserves a peaceful life, it’s you. You are the reason that many of us have jobs today.
Punisher motioned for me to come into his house. We couldn’t stand outside and talk forever. We walked over and he took a seat in his lounge chair. I made myself comfortable on the couch.
Punisher: I’m going to be honest. You’re the last superstar I expected to come to me for advice. When I left, you were one of the smartest guys in the ring. You had dirty tactics, but you got the job done.
Jimmy Helmsley: I think you know why I am here. I’m sure you haven’t completely separated yourself from the business.
It’s been said that if you have been a wrestling superstar, you will always have it in your heart. It’s something that doesn’t go away. From the looks on Punisher’s face, it seems that theory is correct.
Punisher: You should have called me before making this match. That’s already one mistake you’ve made.
Jimmy Helmsley: Why’s that?
Punisher: Because you know very well how dangerous that match can be. Don’t play dumb with me. You were in XFC when Maynard and I had the original Prison Cell match. You saw what happen in that match, what happened to him. That match is full of rage and emotion, there’s no holding back once you step inside the prison.
Jimmy Helmsley: Maybe that’s what I am wanting, ever thought of that?
Punisher: Then you’re a fool. Why would you want to do that to someone else? Why would you want to do that to yourself? I regret that match to this day. I regret everything that happened in it.
Jimmy Helmsley: You don’t get it. Bombtrack has gone insane. He is trying to play everyone for a fool. To top it all off, this “relationship” he has with his wife, it is sick. Don’t tell me that what he is doing shouldn’t be stopped. I know what kind of man you are, Scott. If you were me, you would be doing the same thing.
Punisher: There’s a difference between you and I. I don’t need to step in a prison cell to beat the shit out of Bombtrack. All I need are these two fists and he’s a goner. You make everything out to be this huge issue. It’s something that has dragged your entire career down. Nothing is ever simple to you. This match never needed to be inside a prison cell. You could have done enough damage with another I Quit match. You could have challenged him to a last man standing match. Instead, you do the complete opposite and risk both of your careers over something you shouldn’t even be involved with.
He took a breathe for a second while I thought about some of the things he was saying. I wasn’t going to admit he was right because I didn’t believe he was right. We are two different people who have different beliefs.
Punisher: Let me ask you a question. This young his girl, or his wife I should say, has she asked you for any help? Did she reach out to you to help her get away from Bombtrack?
I didn’t have a response. I knew the response, but I didn’t need to say it.
Punisher: That’s what I thought. You are doing all of this because you have to be the hero. You have to be the guy that makes things right. I know you’re looking for redemption for the sins of your past, but there comes a time when you have to look past things. I know what Bombtrack is doing is disgusting, but if the girl isn’t asking for help, then maybe the problem isn’t Bombtrack.
Jimmy Helmsley: That girl isn’t old enough to understand what Bombtrack is doing to her. She comes from a country where the rights and wrongs are different than they are here. Bombtrack knows exactly what he is doing. He is manipulating the girl. He is telling her things she wants to hear and in response, the girl is staying quiet.
Punisher: And your proof is where? Where are you getting this information from?
Again, I had no response for him.
Punisher: That’s what I thought. All of this is in your head. You want Bombtrack to be the bad guy for the things he has done to you in the past. He destroyed a part of your life that you want back. You are looking for any reason to go after him again. Still, this match, it’s going to be too much for you to handle.
Jimmy Helmsley: I don’t mean any disrespect from this, but where do you come off telling me what is right and wrong? You aren’t in this business anymore. You don’t know what has been going on in this company. Bombtrack is a menace. He has destroyed countless careers and has sent innocent people to jail. He deserves to rot in a cell where he belongs. This match will make that dream one step closer to reality. After I am done with him, he won’t be able to leave the cell on his own will.
Punisher looked disappointed at everything I was saying. I came for his advice, he gave it to me. I didn’t say anything about having to listen to it.
Punisher: Your priority should be the championship match. I don’t think I have ever seen a match with such talent in it. You have a great chance at becoming champion, but you are too blind to see the mistakes you have made. Is Outkast going to forget about all the other competitors in the match just because Psychosis is a thorn in his side? Is Matt Starr going to lose this match just because people think he doesn’t stand a chance? They realize what’s at stake in this match. They realize that this match is one of the most important in their careers and they aren’t going to let the little things get in their way. I just wish you would do the same.
I got up from the couch and started heading towards the door. Punisher grabbed me by the arm before I could walk out.
Punisher: It’s not too late to back out of this match. Nobody will look down on you because of it. Please, just think about it. Would she really want you to be a part of this match?
That’s when I looked eye to eye with him.
Punisher: I know Rachel. She’s a great girl, Jimmy. She didn’t leave because of Bombtrack. It’s up to you to start realizing that. Once you do, that’s when you’ll finally start seeing what truly matters.
I pulled my arm back and started walking out the door, not looking back. I wasn’t making a mistake by competing in this match with Bombtrack. This match is a statement for him to realize that nobody believes he has truly changed. Bombtrack will continue to terrorize until he is finally stopped. Nobody else stepped up, so I had to make sure it happens. Punisher doesn’t realize it. Nobody realizes it. I’m I this battle alone.
