There was an incident that took place backstage during Fear Itself. An unfortunate confrontation between Ivan and some new guy hired off the street. Ivan had already faced Autumn before, a one on one match that ended with Ivan raising his hand in victory. Then again that outcome was inevitable. Ivan learned from his first match, a loss at the hands of a masked man called Orochi, that all the physical gifts and technical skills won't win you a match if you lack that killer instinct. To say Autumn lacked that killer instinct would be a severe understatement. New Era Wrestling is a place of violence, it's a constant war between everyone on the roster, and the ring itself is the battlefield. Autumn did not come to New Era to win a war, she came to New Era to make peace. To be perfectly blunt, Autumn Waterfall does not belong.
But let's get back to our original focus. An unnecessary confrontation between Ivan Gurlukovich and Joey Giorando. To most Ivan was in the wrong, mocking Autumn for being upset over an inanimate object. But it was when he put his hands on her that Joey showed up to *Save the Day* But let's be honest, what exactly did Joey save? Did he save Autumn? I don't think so. At this point it's clear to see that she's not happy any more. And why should she be? She is no soldier, she doesn't know how to take a life, and now she's stuck in this god forsaken war. So was Ivan's hostility proof of a cruel giant wanting to kick Autumn when she was down, or an act of mercy, putting a misplaced soul out of her misery.
I'm sorry, it seems again that I've drifted away from the point. Joey Giorando had no business getting involved. He had successfully won his debut match, and wasn't even on Ivan's radar. But then he did something stupid, he shoves Ivan Gurlukovich and raises his voice. Some punk off the street walks in and puts his hands on Ivan, it was no surprise this confrontation ended with Ivan laying Joey out. Unfortunately for Joey his woes continue, because in just a few short days Joey has to meet Ivan once again, only this time they do so on the battlefield.
Right now, Ivan is relaxing in his home. We find him sitting in a red leather chair, wearing a red sambo gi as if it were a robe. He sits in this chair looking over at his fireplace. A warm fire keeps him warm, and the only form of decoration is a large hand painted portrait of what we can only assume is his father. Other than the chair, and the fireplace there seems to be very little furniture. No television or radio, nothing that would allow the distractions of the outside world in his home. Ivan doesn't look at the camera, his eyes remain glued to the fire, as he begins to speak about his up coming match.
Ivan: I came to New Era Wrestling with a goal in mind. I came to start my legacy, to become the greatest competitor in the best organization in the world. My goal is to have the name Gurlukovich known around the world. For that name to be both feared and respected. In order to achieve this legacy I must compete with, and destroy the best wrestlers in the world. I must leave no doubt that I am superior to everyone else on the roster. But so far my legacy has been put on hold. Before I can prove my worth to the world, I am given these tedious, and insulting tasks to perform.
Ivan's facial expression changes, from content and relaxed to bitter and angry. He looks up at the painting of his father, and struggles to maintain eye contact, as if he's embarrassed with how little he's done so far.
Ivan: It is impossible to gain the respect of anyone in this company with all the trash that is allowed to exist in it. How can anyone take New Era Wrestling seriously when there are jokes like Autumn and Joey running around. I thought I've proven that Autumn does not belong, but it appears she is more popular than ever. There is no room for peace on the battlefield. No room for hugs and kisses. In this world it is killed or be killed, and instead of embracing her killer mentality she runs away from it like a coward.
Ivan shakes his head, and gets out of his seat. He walks out of the room, and for a minute it's unclear where he went, or if he's coming back. You can hear his foot steps from another room, and it sounds like he's opening and closing different doors. Finally the footsteps grow louder, and Ivan walks back into view, now holding a small slightly torn photograph. We can't see what's on this photo, but Ivan sits back down, and looks back into the fire.
Ivan: Then there is Joey. A man who thinks he is ready for war because he grew up around violence. A man who doesn't seem to understand the difference between a thug and a warrior. My hatred towards this man goes deeper than most would think. Not only is he a man who chose the wrong path, a weak man who thinks being angry makes him tough. No, Joey is a reminder of my family's own mistake. My brother Alexander.
After mentioning his name Ivan shows the old photo to the camera, in the middle is his father, smiling looking down at a younger Ivan. But on the other side of the father stands another, obviously Ivan's brother Alexander. The black sheep of the Gurlukovich family is dressed similar to how Joey dresses, torn up jeans and a leather jacket. While Ivan and his father are both smiling with pride, Alexander isn't even looking at the camera, his attention is elsewhere, as if he's rather not even be there at all.
Ivan: I have seen what the so called tough guys from the street can do. I know they murder one another every day. They think they are superior to everyone else, they are above the law. But worst of all they consider themselves a family. That group of thugs disgrace the term family. They stick together because they are unable to make it on their own. Joey you and my brother are evidence of what is wrong with the world today. I could never forgive my brother for ruining our family name. But Alexander was lucky, I could not harm him, for he is family. But you Joey, you are not family. All the terrible things I've wanted to do to my brother, I'll get to do to you. I will show you Joey what real strength is. At New Generation you will learn your place.
Ivan once again gets out of his seat, this time walking closer to the fireplace. He looks down at the photo, his eyes staring down at the image of his brother, and he spits on it, before tossing it into the flames. Somehow watching the photo burn brings a smile to Ivan's face, or perhaps he's smiling because he's remembered he's left somebody out on this rant of his.
Ivan: One more thing. This battle we will share, there is another I have almost forgotten. He calls himself Iron Heart yes? A man who hides behind a mask, but if there is anything I have learned it's that a man behind a mask can be a very dangerous thing. This Iron Heart, for the time being he knows his place. He knows he is at the bottom of the ladder. He knows this match is a big opportunity for him. He also understands that emotions get in the way, and that Joey's anger is our biggest weapon. And with no personal feelings involved on the battlefield, he knows he has to hurt those who get in his way. This I can use, this can work for me. Iron Heart, you do as your told and we will walk out triumphant. You be the good little soldier, and I'll be The General.
Ivan's smile grows larger, as the camera begins to fade to black, and all we can hear is Ivan laughing, as if he just told the world's funniest joke.
