This is what it has come down too. A “respect” match between NEW’s very own, tag-team champions. Every team has their arguments and confrontations from time to time, but it rarely gets to a point where a team must meet each other in the ring to work out their differences. Whose fault was it? What made it get to this point? There was no clear answer, both men were at fault, but afraid to take responsibility for their actions, and pointed blame at the other. But what they did not realize was that every time you point at someone else, you have three fingers pointing back at you. Reno and Jack have had history before even signing NEW contracts, they came from another wrestling federation, so they knew each other well, but it was only at their signing to NEW that they were forced to work together. The team wasn’t by their choice, but by the choice of Travis Blaine. They have been at each other’s throats ever since. Even though thick and thin, they were able to become tag-team champions twice, a goal not met by many teams in NEW. They even were seconds away to become CWC champions, but that fell by the wayside. This was it. One match. Both men trying to earn respect from the other. Would this be what the team needs to solve their problems and walk out as friends, and perhaps one of the greatest tag-teams NEW has seen? Only Fear Itself will tell.
The scene opens outside on a brisk afternoon in the middle of Philadelphia. We are in the center of town, where oak trees align South Street, a popular street in the heart of the town. People of all ages were walking down the side walk on both sides of the street, some window shopping, some spending time with others, some walking back to work from their lunch break. There was a huge sense of belonging in the air. The town’s baseball team was still alive and fighting in the MLB post season, and they weren’t afraid to show their pride by wearing team fan memorabilia. The ones who weren’t wearing any were given an irate look of despise and hate. Cars rolled past in the street, the air filled with friendly car horns and yells. This baseball team has really brought this town together. Off of South Street was a park, with sidewalks running down each side with vendors, and street acts. The leaves on the trees in the park were changing colors, and falling softly to the ground. You could tell that the air was getting colder, and we were entering fall. We zoom up to Jack Erickson and Skylar who are walking along the sidewalk near the park. They both dressed casually, Erickson still representing Ace High.
Skylar: “Jack, isn’t this romantic? A walk in one of the biggest cities in the country, everyone so happy because of the post season? This is like a fairy tale!”
Jack yawns, not intrigued by Skylar’s attempt to impress him. He makes sounds with his mouth that gives the notion that he is throwing up. He then chuckles, as Skylar becomes upset.
Skylar: “Jack, that’s not funny. This is really beautiful. Why do we have to live in Vegas? Of course they have the night life, but they have nothing else. No sense of belonging, no decent sports teams to stand behind, nothing. You can’t raise a family in Vegas Jack.”
“A family? What? When did we get to wanting a family?”
Erickson sees that Skylar is a bit hurt by the comment, and changes the subject quickly. “There is plenty to do in Vegas. It is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the world, people fly here from all over the world. Dreams are made here. You have to know how to gamble though, or you will lose your money like most rookies do. You got to know when to play them, and with to fold ‘um.”
Skylar: “You have a very serious problem, you know that right?” “Haters gunna’ hate.”
Skylar: “Enough fooling around, this is a very serious week, not only is this a pay-per-view event, but you face your own teammate, your own friend, Reno Tayl----.”
Skylar is cut off by a younger boy, who probably just reached his teenage years. He is wearing the usual town attire: Phillies jersey and hat, and blue jeans. He has a smile from ear to ear. He has a pen and small pad of paper in his hand, and it is obvious what he wants.
Little Kid: “Are you Jack Erickson and Skylar?”
“No, I’m Jack “The Diamond” Erickson, and this is my wench Skylar.”
Skylar gives Jack a dirty look out of the corner of her eye, before bringing her attention to the cute boy in front of them. The kids face was very excited, and he could barely speak, the words mumbling out of his mouth. “I am your biggest fan! I love Ace High. Especially you, Reno is okay. Can I have your autograph? I hope you win! I’m going to the show this Sunday. I will be cheering for you.”
Erickson stares at the kid with a blank stare, not sure what to respond with. “Uhhhh. Sure kid, whatever you say.”
As Erickson takes the notebook and pen from the kid’s hand, and starts to sign the paper. He looks back up to the kid, and smirks.
“I’m guessing you’re a Phillies fan?”
Little Kid: “Of course, ever since I was born.”
Erickson coughs into his hand while saying “Band-wagon.” The little kid looks confused, and Erickson breaks the awkward silence.
“How about we make a bet? If the Cardinals win game 5, you owe me your allowance for a month, but if the Phillies win, I will give you one hundred dollars. Deal? We will meet here the same time tomorrow and the winner will get paid.”
The kid stares at him, confused and dazed.
Little Kid: “My parents told me not to make deals with strangers.”
“I’m not a stranger, I am Jack Erickson. You’ve known me from television.”
Little Kid: “You’re right, DEAL.”
Erickson shakes the little kid’s hand, and he runs off into the park, as Erickson and Skylar continue walking.
“That is exactly what I meant by me knowing when to make bets. That was easy money.”
Skylar shakes her head in disbelief, and doesn’t even respond, but changes the subject.
Skylar: “So what about Reno?”
“Reno, Reno, Reno. I guess the time has finally come where I can show Reno that I truly have his back, and that he can trust me. The match is called a respect match for a reason, so no matter what happens, and who wins, we will walk out with the utmost respect for one another, and will walk out a better and strong team. Just think, if other teams in NEW couldn’t beat us when we were at each other’s throats, how could they possibly beat us when we are on the same page? I don’t look at Reno as my opponent in this fight, I look at him as my friend, and my partner - who I just need to show that I really belong in the ring with him, and that we can do big things together. No homo. I hope he feels the same way. I know that we have said some things to each other that were pretty rude, and I know we didn’t mean any of it, but that is what happens when two guys that have tension are near each other, something is bound to happen. I just hope that this match will help us put all of our past history behind us, and that we can go into the future as stronger teammates, and the best tag-team NEW has ever seen.”
Skylar: “I hope that is what happens too. How come you pulled Psychosis off of the pin last week? You guys had that win in the bag.”
“I wanted to show everyone that I could win a match by getting the pin myself. I didn’t mean to disrespect Psychosis, but I am on a road to prove myself, and that is what I am out to do.”
Skylar: “But you ended up losing the match, instead of winning, you ended up costing your team the match.”
“Let’s be serious. We all knew that Psychosis and I could have that match blindfolded, so I thought it was a good chance to show that I am the real deal, and not just some punk bitch everyone sees me at, obviously shit happens, as we ended up losing the match.”
Skylar and Erickson keep walking down the sidewalk, and walk up to a food cart at the end of the sidewalk. They order two Phili cheese-steaks. As the sandwiches are made, they look around, breathing in the fresh air, and the smell of the steak. As the sandwiches are finished, Erickson looks to Skylar to pay the man. She sighs and throws him a 10 dollar bill, and they walk off. Erickson takes a few bites of his sandwich, and a disturbed look comes across his face. He crumples up the rest of his cheese-steak and throws it away in a garbage can.
“I thought those were supposed to be good? Isn’t that like the National food of Philadelphia? That is nothing to brag about, taste like a rotten pussy if you ask me.”
Skylar: “I just paid 5 dollars for that, and you just throw it away?” “Wasted your money.”
The scene fades black, as the couple is seen walking the streets of Philadelphia.
