ATHENS - Argentine midfielder Sebastian Leto is set to be disciplined by Greek champions Olympiakos Piraeus after a training ground argument with coach Ernesto Valverde.
Leto, on loan from Liverpool, had been left out of the Athens derby against Panathinaikos on Sunday for a previous incident and, according to Greek media reports, was reluctant to perform his exercises along with the rest of the team on Monday.
"During yesterday's training session there was an issue with footballer Sebastian Leto who for the umpteenth time gave in to disciplinary problems forcing me to send him to the dressing room," Valverde said in a statement on the Olympiakos website on Tuesday.
"For this specific incident I have informed the administrative section of the club which is there to deal with it. As I have said in the past, for me the top priority is discipline and the calmness of the team which comes above all of us."
Leto, 22, joined Olympiakos in August on a season-long loan after failing to secure a work permit that would allow him to play in the UK.

Liverpool’s Sebastian Leto, on loan with Olympiacos for this season, could be making a hastier return to Anfield after a training ground bust up with his Greek side.

The player was sent on loan after he was refused a work permit to play in the Premier League last summer.

According to reports Leto was angry at being left out of the weekend’s big clash against Greek rivals Panathinaiokos, and in the following training session was given a dressing down by the boss for refusing to train with the rest of the team.

In the ensuing training session the player is said to have started kicking balls wildly, and with one well aimed bit of shooting managed to get the club coach Ernesto Valverde.

The manager of the club issued the following statement:

“During yesterday’s training there was an issue with Sebastian Leto, which for the umpteenth time was a disciplinary offence - forcing me to send him to the dressing room.

“I have informed the administration about this particular incident, and it is now up to them to decide the action needed. As I have said in the past, discipline is a fundamental concern for the calmness of the team.”

Leto has completed more than 30 games for Olympiacos, a stipulation which Liverpool had ordered in his loan contract.

Liverpool midfielder Sebastian Leto's loan deal with Olympiakos is in the balance following a row with coach Ernesto Valverde.

The Argentine midfielder moved to the Greek club on a one-year loan in the summer after failing to secure a work permit to play in the Premier League.

Leto was left out of the Olympiakos squad for the weekend clash with Panathinaikos and then stepped out of line during a training session.

The 22-year-old is reported to have begun kicking footballs around wildly after refusing to train with the rest of the team, with Valverde and his assistant both struck.

Fundamental

Valverde told the club's official website: "During yesterday's training there was an issue with Sebastian Leto, which for the umpteenth time was a disciplinary offence - forcing me to send him to the dressing room.

"I have informed the administration about this particular incident, and it is now up to them to decide the action needed. As I have said in the past, discipline is a fundamental concern for the calmness of the team."

Leto's contract with Olympiakos included a clause that he would have to play at least 30 games this season; otherwise the Greek side would have to pay a fine to Liverpool.

The Buenos Aires-born left winger, who has impressed with his combination of pace and trickery, completed 31 games last week in the UEFA Cup match against Saint Etienne which saw Valverde's men go out 5-2 on aggregate.

It doesn't sound like he's getting on too well in Greece. It can't bode well for his future at the club.

He's looked decent for the reserves at times, but I don't think he's quick enough to make a real mark here.

I had hoped that Leto would go and develop at Olympiakos, and he might well have done considering he's played 31 games, but if he is getting involved in a string of disciplinary incidents, it's not going to help that.

Football FanCast guest columnist James Pryce wonders if Leto's return could save Rafa a few quid and subsequently provide the natural width they so crave.
There are certain rulings in football that I continually fail to understand and the work permit issue is right up there. Spurs for example had to recently apply for a new work permit for Wilson Palacios, even though he was granted a 5yr one when he first signed for the Latics. Crazy situation really and as equally puzzling is the whole issue that surrounds us and Sebastian Leto.
If someone can tell me the logic of how a player can be signed up, fees paid only to have a permit rejected and to make matters worse is subsequently free to go play in other European Leagues then I would like to know. It is a complete an utter joke and as Rafa put it earlier, the sooner this rule gets changed the better.
Liverpool have applied once again, ahead of the next season and must feel confident of securing one, given Leto's impressive performances for Olympiakos. There is no doubting his abilities and you could argue that we have really missed out on not having an out an out winger within the squad, I mean Riera is decent but for me he doesn't provide that natural width and creativity that we so desperately lack at times. I actually think he would benefit playing on the right and subsequently cutting inside on his left, it is surely a better option than Kuyt but that's an article for another day.

The Argentine could well be the answer to our prayers and our forgotten man could save us a small fortune in providing the width we desperately crave for next season. Hopefully the authorities we wake up to their senses and use Leto as the sample case and bring an end to this red tape nonsense once and for all.

I agree that Riera isn't up to the task, despite some promising performances. But I'm not sure Leto has the drive or determination required.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez hopes Argentine winger Sebastian Leto will qualify for a work permit to play in England next season.

The Reds were forced to loan out Leto for the season after the 21-year-old failed tp secure a permit from the Department of Work and Pensions after his Italian passport, which allowed him to play for the club last season, was revoked.

Leto has impressed during his time with Greek outfit Olympiakos, although his tenure has been littered with disciplinary problems that include being dropped after reportedly kicking balls at the club's coaching staff in training.

Benitez claims Leto's pedigree means he should qualify for a permit to play in England and that the rules should be changed to allow someone of his quality to feature in the Premier League.

Asset

"Leto is an asset for Liverpool and I hope that he will get the work permit in order to have him with us next season," Benitez told SportDay.

"I am disappointed at what happened last summer. It was a surprise for us that he didn't manage to secure a work permit.

"Leto played a high level football back in Argentina. He has experience for Argentina's Olympic team and played some Champions League games for us.

"Everybody says that he is good enough. There were a lot of clubs in Italy and Spain wanting him and he can't play with us in Premier League. I think that this rule must change.

"I hope him performing well for another club in another country and making his mark at the European competitions, the authorities have to admit this rule is wrong."

The situation with Leto is more complicated by the work permit issue, but Benitez said: 'We will try to work something out, I do not want him to go.'

Leto has impressed in Greece and played over 30 games for Olympiakos, despite having disciplinary problems with coach Ernesto Valverde, who has now left the club.

Benitez could sell Leto, or send him out on loan again - although that is now unlikely with the 22-year-old wanting his future cleared up permanently.

He signed for Liverpool in August 2007 and figured in pre-season friendlies and early qualifying rounds for the Champions League, but could not make his Premier League debut because of the passport and work permit problems.

The reasons for refusing the permit were his lack of international and club experience.

Benitez was critical of that decision, and hopes that a season in the Greek league and selection for the Olympics will change the situation.

If not Leto will also be sold this summer, with a £3m fee now likely.

Liverpool flop Sebastian Leto could be set for a shock move to Italian giants Juventus. The 22-year-old midfielder, who has spent the season on loan at Olympiakos, looks unlikely to return to Anfield in the summer with manager Rafael Benitez preparing to offload the Argentine Leto had been linked with a summer switch to France with Paris Saint Germain thought to be leading the chase.

But Juventus boss Claudio Ranieri looks set to win the race for Leto with the player determined to kick-start his career after a difficult time with Liverpool.

Liverpool FC: winger for sale for £3m, striker for sale for £6million
May 27 2009

LIVERPOOL BOSS Rafa Benitez insists that he will again try to solve the work permit problem for Argentina-born winger Leto, who has spent the last season on loan to Greek club Olympiacos.

Ukraine striker Voronin was hoping that Hertha Berlin would make his season-long deal there permanent, but the German side's failure to reach the Champions League means they will not be taking up the option and he will be returning to Anfield.

He is now expected to be put up for sale with a £6m price tag.

I think we should sell Leto. He's a decent player, but I don't think he's shown enough to suggest that he's a better option on the left than Riera or Benayoun.

Also, I would like to see us sign David Silva and put the money from Leto's sale towards the Spaniard. Or even use him in the deal as a direct replacement for Silva on Valencia's left what with Vicente being injured most of the time.

Liverpool winger Sebastian Leto has revealed he is almost certain to move to Panathinaikos in the near future.

The 22-year-old is set to leave the Reds after it was discovered he would have little or no chance of gaining a work permit due to his lack of appearances on Merseyside.

The Argentine only joined the club in the summer of 2007 and spent the entire of last season on loan at Greek side Olympiakos.

The former Lanus youngster admits that he would have preferred to make his move to the Greek champions permanent but the offer never came.

"I am very close to Panathinaikos," he said. "There are negotiations between Panathinaikos and Liverpool and as far as I know the two sides are very close to a deal.

Almost certain

"I think that the possibilities to play at Panathinaikos next season right now are more than 90 per cent.

"I have been waiting for something from Olympiakos all these weeks but they didn't make a move to buy me so far.

"It's not a matter of money. I wanted to stay at Olympiakos but since they don't want to sign me I have to think about my future."

Liverpool have accepted a bid of around £3m from Panathinaikos for Argentinian midfielder Sebastien Leto, according to reports in the Greek media tonight.

Leto spent last season on loan at Olympiakos after problems securing a work permit to play in Britain, a decision which angered Rafa Benitez last summer.

The boss said “I cannot understand how an Argentinian player who has been in the squad for the Olympic games and has different coaches and managers talking about how good he is, who has been playing in the Champions League and playing for a club like Liverpool (cannot get a work permit).”

Leto was signed from Lanus for £1.85m in summer 2007, he made a couple of pre-season appearances and played in the Champions League qualifier against Toulouse but problems with his passport saw him only play in the reserves for the whole of his first season in England. He since gained an Italian passport but was rejected a work permit.

Meanwhile, Olympiakos, who Leto made 22 appearances for last season, are interested in signing another former Liverpool left winger, Mark Gonzalez from Real Betis.

Leto won’t be the last departure this summer, with Rafa Benitez trimming his squad to generate funds for first team signings. Andriy Voronin is available, Alvaro Arbeloa and Andrea Dossena are expected to leave for fees of around £6m each and Jermaine Pennant is a free agent after his contract expired. Also heading for the exit is Charles Itandje.
