Rafa Benitez believes Yossi Benayoun's current form is proof that every member of his squad can still have a massive impact on Liverpool's quest for glory.
The Israel captain scored a sublime goal against Wigan last week before an impressive cameo in the 2-0 victory over Chelsea.

Benitez told Liverpoolfc.tv: "Yossi is a player with quality and game intelligence.

"He can change games. Hopefully he will be a key player for the rest of the season.

"We always talk about the importance of a squad - the players on the bench and those who are not involved in every game. Yossi is a very good example. Everyone has to be ready."

He did well when he came on against Chelsea. Riera was sloppy and wasted a massive chance to score. Benayoun had purpose and desire - for once.

Yossi Benayoun has praised Rafa Benitez for his managerial approach and emphasis on continued success.

“I have come to appreciate that, at a big club like Liverpool, you can’t take anything for granted,” he said.

“With the number of top players we’ve got, you accept you are not always going to be playing and that you have to give it everything, when your chance comes along. That is fine with me. If I found myself going three or four months without setting foot on the pitch, it might be different. But as things stand, that is not an issue with me. I feel settled, and I’m happy to be contributing.”

“I am also learning how things work here. You can score a very famous goal, an absolutely crucial one, and it will all be forgotten the following day, as far as the manager is concerned.”

“He only thinks of the next challenge, and that is how it should be. It has taught me you can’t celebrate too long or rest on your laurels, and I am already looking at my goal in Madrid that way.”

“For me, it will only be important if we go all the way and win the Champions League. Otherwise, it will count for nothing.”

“It was madness in our changing rooms in Madrid last week, after we won, and I had to take my mobile phone into the toilets to call my family. It was the only way I could make myself heard,” he said.

“Everyone was screaming and shouting, except for the manager, of course. He was his usual calm self. He didn’t even congratulate us or shake hands, never mind join in all the hugs and backslapping that was going on.”

“That’s just how he is, and I am beginning to understand why. He is very professional, and he wants us to be the same all the time. He won’t stand for any of us getting carried away or feeling we are superior to anyone else.”

“He likes keeping you on your toes. He only announced the team two hours before kick-off.”

I've been really pleased with Benayoun lately, he's really started to show his worth and fight for his place.

He reminds me of Peter Beardsley in the way he has such good close control while sprinting. He can slink between defenders with ease when he's at full flow and he's also one of the few support attackers we have with creativity.

Ok, so he's no world beater, but he's been more effective going forward than Riera, Babel, El Zhar and Kuyt in recent weeks - and we've been desperate for that.

Rafa Benitez insists he was not surprised when Yossi Benayoun headed the winning goal in the Bernabeu - and claims the diminutive Israeli can be Liverpool's secret weapon from set pieces.
The 28-year-old scored arguably the biggest goal of his Reds career following a cross from Fabio Aurelio to secure a 1-0 win against Real Madrid last week.

Benitez does not believe it was a one off, and hopes the header will fill his in-form winger with confidence as Liverpool enter the business end of 2008-09.

"Clearly Yossi will take confidence from this goal because it was the winning goal in such an important game," said the gaffer.

"It was funny because after the game we were on the coach and we were watching it again on video, and some of the players were laughing because they had not expected Yossi to score this kind of goal.

"But I was not surprised about it because I know that he can do this type of thing.

"I was talking to him recently because he is really good when we are defending corners and it is clear that he is able to win headers.

"He is also a very clever player with good movements, so there is no reason why he cannot also be a threat in the opposition box when we have set plays."

Benayoun's form has been one of the plusses of 2009 so far.

Benitez added: "I have been talking with my staff about Yossi and we all agree that he has been playing very well recently.

"When you get to this stage of the season it can sometimes be that players are getting tired but in Yossi's case we have been able to see in training and in games that he is looking good and doing well.

"Yossi is an intelligent player who makes good movements.

"He can beat players, he can keep the ball between the lines and he is very good at spotting the opportunity for the final pass.

"He can provide assists for the other players and he can also score important goals, as we saw against Real Madrid last week.

"Like I said, he is a player with quality and game intelligence.

"He can change games. Hopefully he will be a key player for the rest of the season.

"We always talk about the importance of a squad – the players on the bench and those who are not involved in every game. Yossi is a very good example. Everyone has to be ready."

Football FanCast columnist Rob Facey wonders whether Yossi Benayoun gets the credit he deserves at Liverpool.
Yossi Benayoun has said he is happy to stay at Liverpool after finally feeling part of Rafa Benitez's plans at Anfield.
The Israel captain spoke to Benitez in December about the possibility of leaving the club at the end of the season unless he played a more important role, but has revised his plans after having starring roles in recent weeks.
He scored the winner against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu last week and again against Sunderland on Tuesday, but does Benayoun ever get the credit he deserves at Anfield?
"With the number of top players we've got, you accept you are not always going to be playing and that you have to give it everything when your chance comes along. That is fine with me," said Benayoun, as reported in The Guardian.
"If I found myself going three or four months without setting foot on the pitch, it might be different. But as things stand, that is not an issue with me."
Benayoun also gave an insight into the mind of his manager, explaining that praise from the Spaniard is as very rare.
"I feel settled and I'm happy to be contributing. I am also learning how things work here. You can score a very famous goal, an absolutely crucial one, and it will all be forgotten the following day as far as the manager is concerned.
"He only thinks of the next challenge and that is how it should be. It has taught me you can't celebrate too long and I am already looking at my goal in Madrid that way. For me it will only be important if we go all the way and win the Champions League. Otherwise it will count for nothing."
So has Benayoun been hard done by this season?
Benitez's rotation policy is hardly a new part of his managerial style, so why did he think he would get preferential treatment?
Then again, scoring the winner at Madrid is not a bad way to prove your worth to the team, so was he justified to consider leaving the club?Is it just a harsh fact of Liverpool life that he still might not figure in the next game?
Do fans think that Benayoun is good enough to be an important player to be part of a team that challenges for league and European titles?
And what do fans make of the "treat them mean" tactic employed by Benitez? Is this a reason his team have fallen out of the title race? Would a more harmonious dressing room and a sense of togetherness not be better at this stage of the season?
Should Benayoun be lauded as an Anfield hero, or will he be just another that is thrown on the scrapheap once his job is done?

David Prentice: Versatile Yossi is worth every penny
MAR 6 2009 BY DAVID PRENTICE, LIVERPOOL ECHO

WHEN West Ham were demanding transfer fees ranging from £6m to something nearer £10m for Yossi Benayoun, Reds fans laughed.
Even when the Israeli international arrived for a more modest £5m, there were plenty of raised eyebrows.
But Benayoun has proved himself to be the epitomy of the invaluable modern squad player.
Capable of playing a variety of roles, capable of scoring vital goals, he’s even prepared to accept that he won’t be playing every week.
His form at present, however, ensures that he should be. Benayoun has been a shaft of light in a mixed month for Liverpool Football Club, and a better addition to the Liverpool squad than many expected.

Yossi Benayoun faces up to three weeks on the sidelines after a training ground accident saw the current form man collided with a team-mate - causing a torn hamstring.

The Israeli scored the winning goal in Liverpool’s 1-0 victory in the Bernabeu over Real Madrid ten days ago and now looks set to miss both the second leg at Anfield on Tuesday and his side’s visit to Old Trafford next Saturday. He could also be set to miss his national side’s qualifier against Greece later this month.

Benayoun has emerged as a key figure in recent weeks after giving his side a 1-0 first-leg lead in their last 16 tie with Real and following up with the goal that confirmed a 2-0 win over Sunderland at Anfield last week.

But, if the initial diagnosis proves correct, he will miss the return with Real, a visit to Old Trafford that Liverpool have to win to retain any fading title hopes and possibly even the following weekend’s home game with Aston Villa.

It is not the first injury blow to the Reds this season, with Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard both serving spells out of the side with minor injuries.

Yossi Benayoun will defy Liverpool’s wishes by playing for Israel in their 2010 World Cup qualifiers this week.

The midfielder has been out of action for a fortnight after suffering a hamstring injury.

But the former West Ham man is determined to captain his country against Greece this weekend.

Although he admits that he may suffer further injury, he feels that helping Israel towards a World Cup spot justifies his actions.

“I had a little problem with Liverpool,” said Benayoun.

“They didn’t really want me to come to Israel.”

“But as long as I know I will be able to give 100 per cent I will play, even if it means risking my health.”

“I’ve been going through intensive treatment in the last couple of weeks and I’m almost fully fit, but sometimes it’s still painful.”

“Missing out on Saturday’s match would be the biggest disappointment of my career.”

“I’m feeling much better now and I hope that in a day or two I will be able to train with the team.”

“If that happens, I will be able to play. Two weeks’ absence isn’t that significant.”

Rafa Benitez is reportedly angry that Yossi Benayoun has defied his orders by planning to play for Israel in a 2010 World Cup qualifier this weekend. After the way Benitez has treated Benayoun over the last 2 years, what exactly does he expect?

In a recent interview, Benayoun said:

“I had a little problem with Liverpool. They didn’t really want me to come to Israel. But as long as I know I will be able to give 100 per cent I will play, even if it means risking my health.”

“I’ve been going through intensive treatment in the last couple of weeks and I’m almost fully fit, but sometimes it’s still painful. Missing out on Saturday’s match would be the biggest disappointment of my career.”

Benayoun – like so many other good players over the last 5 years – has been messed around by Benitez ever since he arrived at Anfield. Indeed, Benitez has made it abundantly clear that he doesn’t consider the Israeli as a regular first team player.

Let’s look at the facts:

1. This season, Benayoun has been benched or subbed in 28 out of 39 games.

2. Last season, it was 33 games benched/subbed in 52 games

3. Total: 61 games subbed/benched out 91 games.

So, in almost 70 per cent of Liverpool games, Benayoun is either on the bench or subbed. Add to this the fact that he rarely gets a run in the team and is often dropped after scoring goals – a typical Benitez trademark.

On the other hand, Benayoun is the CAPTAIN of Israel, who have an historic chance to qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1970.

You can be sure that if it was Steven Gerrard planning to play in a crucial world cup qualifier for England then fans would react in a completely different way.

Clearly, Benitez does not value Benayoun, but that is no surprise considering that, with few exceptions, genuinely creative players always seem to be marginalised/misused by Benitez.

I am sure that if Benitez had treated Benayoun differently and actually showed a bit of faith in him, then his decision to play for Israel may have been harder to make.

I imagine though that the decision was very hard to make: Stay in Liverpool and hang out on the bench hoping that a manager who has never valued me gives me 10 minutes at the end of a premiership game; OR play for my country in a crucial World Cup qualifier for a manager that actually values my contribution?

Tough decision indeed.

Benayoun is NOT putting country above club; he is putting country above Benitez, something I have absolutely no problem with.

Any fans criticising Benayoun should consider their sniping in the context of Steven Gerrard's attitude to England, as the Liverpool captain considers playing for England to be far more important than playing for his club.

Yossi Set For New Contract

Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun has been bolstered by the news that Rafael Benitez is prepared to hand him a new long-term contract. When Yossi moved to Anfield in 2007, questions were asked as to whether or not he could cut it at the top level and its fair to say that he recieved his fair amount of critics.

However after Liverpool spurned interest from clubs such as Manchester City and ex emplyers West Ham United, Yossi has become an integral part of the set up at Anfield and it looks as though he will be rewarded for his efforts.

Benayoun has previously voiced his frustration at the lack of first opportunities, but with the recent absence of Steven Gerrard, the Israeli playmaker has had a very productive spell, notching some vital goals as the Reds pursue the PremierLeague title.

Manager Rafael Benitez, when speaking to the independent, he said:

'I think if he is happy, then he will be okay here,'

'Now he is playing more games, has more confidence and you can see the quality that he has'

'I have to talk to him [about a new contract] but he is contracted for another two years.'

The Spanish tactician also reveiled there has been no interest from other rival clubs. He added:

'We've had no real approaches for him.'

Yossi has shown his worth this season, and is one of the main reasons we havn't really struggled so much when Gerrard has been out injured...

At the start of the season i would have thought that was unthinkable, but I'm happy he has proved me wrong.

Benayoun really came on strong in the second half of the season and contributed some very valuable goals and assists.

I hope we keep him next season as he has the versatility to play all across the three support attacking roles and is a player in a real purple patch of form.

I think he's also overtaken Albert Riera in the pecking order for the left-wing spot. Although, I'd rather see David Silva there than either.

Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun has revealed he has received offers from clubs in England and Spain, but insists he is happy at Anfield.

The Israel international has enjoyed a memorable season, scoring nine goals in 42 appearances in all competitions to mark his most successful campaign.

That form has caught the eye of a number of clubs, who are hoping to take advantage of the fact that Benayoun is not guaranteed a place in Rafa Benitez's first-team.

But the former West Ham player is adamant he does not want to leave Merseyside after two years and has indicated that he would welcome contract talks.

"This has been the best season of my career. I have played a lot of games and scored some important goals, and I am very happy with that," the attacking midfielder told Israeli radio.

"At the moment, I am a Liverpool player, and unless something surprising happens, I will remain one. But after such a good season, I have had some offers from England and Spain.

"You have to give that some consideration, so there will probably be some discussions with Liverpool.

"I have had a great two years at Anfield and enjoyed every minute. I have long since accepted that, with one or two notable exceptions, there is no such thing as an automatic choice at Liverpool.

"Unless you are Steven Gerrard, you are going to sit out one or two games, but that is no problem. Stevie is exceptional, and the rest of us accept that.

"The good thing is, I have been playing more, and I hope it continues that way. To be honest, it could be Real Madrid knocking on my door, and I would still rather stay at Liverpool four more years."

Yossi Benayoun has claimed that he is attracting a lot of interest from rival Premiership clubs along with a few Spanish sides – but he wishes to remain at Anfield.

“This has been the best season of my career,” Benayoun told Israeli radio. “I have played a lot of games and scored some important goals, and I am very happy with that.”

He featured in forty-two games for the Reds this past season, scoring nine goals.

“At the moment, I am a Liverpool player, and unless something surprising happens, I will remain one. But after such a good season, I have had some offers from England and Spain.”

“You have to give that some consideration, so there will probably be some discussions with Liverpool.”

Benayoun accepts that he is not a first-choice at Anfield, but he is happy with his lot.

He added: “I have had a great two years at Anfield and enjoyed every minute. I have long since accepted that, with one or two notable exceptions, there is no such thing as an automatic choice at Liverpool.”

“Unless you are Steven Gerrard, you are going to sit out one or two games, but that is no problem. Stevie is exceptional, and the rest of us accept that.”
