Some suggested videos and DVDs

Although videos and DVDs can never replace actually training horses oneself or watching others train horses, they can be a useful aid to understanding more about training and they also provide opportunities for judges to see more training and a larger number of horses of different types and abilities than they could probably see in reality.

Some videos designed specifically with judges in mind. They show a range of horse doing different movements at each level and give the viewer a chance to give their own marks and then to compare them with Stephen Clarke’s marks.

Through the Judges Eye, with Stephen Clarke. Volume 1. Novice & Elementary. Powerline Productions. Equestrian Vision. EQV 1471

Through the Judge’s Eye with Stephen Clarke. Volume 2. Medium and Advanced Medium. Powerline Productions. Equestrian Vision EQV 1495

Other videos are designed to show correct training of both the way of going and riding of the movements. Unfortunately many of the older ones were on videos which are going out of production but are not being remade on DVDs so they don’t seem to be as easy to get hold of as they used to be but any video of a well respected trainer at work could be helpful.

Training with Kyra Kyrklund is a series of six videos including the very earliest stages of training up to Grand Prix. They are available through the website http://www.kyrak.com/

Watching videos of dressage competitions is not as good as watching them in real life but it can be helpful and particularly where the actual judges marks can be seen as in the one from the European Championships at Hickstead and there are more recent ones of the top international competitions.

F.E.i. European Dressage Championships – Hickstead. Includes every test in the Grand Prix, Grand Prix Special and the Kur with judges marks. This is available from Dressage at Hickstead, see their website for contact details.

Anky’s Music, DVD and CD. Various sources on Google

Dressage training with Ulla Salzgeber £29.99 from the British Horse Society on their website. www.britishhorse.com/acatalog/BritishHorse_Dressage_DVD_83.html

Official British Dressage Tests. Current British Dressage Tests are ridden and Richard Davison gives helpful tips. Several DVDs at various prices. Available from the British Horse Society and on their website www.britishhorse.com/acatalog/BritishHorse_Dressage_DVD_83.html
