How sad is this.....you can thank psychonutism for it.

An estimated in one in 20 U.S. adults is not literate in English, which means 11 million people lack the skills to perform everyday tasks, a federal study shows. From 1992 to 2003, the nation's adults made no progress in their ability to read a newspaper, a book or any other prose arranged in sentences and paragraphs. They also showed no improvement in comprehending documents such as bus schedules and prescription labels.

The adult population did make gains in handling quantitative tasks, such as calculating numbers found on tax forms or bank statements. But even in that area of literacy, the typical adult showed only basic skills, enough to perform simple daily activities.

Well you see, when you got the dumbest things like this leet speak crap and new broken english slang....this is what you get.

Quote:

Perhaps most sobering: Adult literacy dropped or was flat across every level of education, from people with graduate degrees to those who dropped out of high school.

Inside the numbers, black adults made gains on each type of task tested in the National Assessment of Adult Literacy, run by the Education Department. Hispanics, though, showed sharp declines in their ability to handle prose and documents. White adults made no significant changes except when it came to computing numbers, where they got better.

The results are based on a sample of more than 19,000 adults, age 16 or older, in homes, college housing or prisons. It is representative of a population of 222 million adults.

The 11 million adults who are not literate in English include people who may be fluent in another language, such as Spanish, but are unable to comprehend text in English.

Now read that last part agian. 11 million adults include those who are fluent in some other language like spanish. Can you say our english language is under attack? Now you see why you gotta press 1 for english!!?? :@ And Neo, when it comes to reading in the classroom...why you think the diamon containers can successful put together what 50 cent says....but can't use this same succession when it comes to reading...say...the three little pigs?

Incredible.

The saddest-or scariest- thing about this is that it's not only a reality, but we've got people like this walking around everywhere. I may not speak like George Washington-but I don't sound like Coolio either. I don't think anything can be done, expect that all of us smart enough to care ought to try to change the world before everyone who knows how to spell "microscopic" is considered a god on earth.

Well, your right...nothing can be done and it's sad. The only thing you can do is teach your nephews, nieces, or your own kids how to read and spell...and not end up like these psychonuts. I'm hoping my nephews are learning how to read and identify things....so far it seems like they are on a good start. I don't want them to end up as illiterate as most of my generation. -_-

DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and i thought MY skills were bad...(mostly grammatical errors so yeah, i CAN read and write English...no translator here.)

Geez...no wonder i have this story in my arsenal now...

i was in English class mid november and a girl came accross the word "guess" or something similar, i forget which word but it was similar to that so we'll use it. instead of pronouncing it "guess," she pronounced it "guss." and then when the class laughed at her mistake she tried to make it "Geese." and no, she's not a hispanic person. she's white, just like me. -_-
want a website? PM me and i'll try to make you one! ^__^ that does NOT include me searching around for a week trying to find webhosts to fit your specific needs...i only do the coding.

if you want to take a look at some of my handiwork before you decide, go to My journal and let me know what you think! i made most of it by myself.

This is sad, just plain sad. I can read right at college level, but my comprehension is crap, but it has been somewhat getting better. I don't read books, unless if you count manga...^^;

But really, this is sad, people just dont really seem to care about their education, they just care about stupid stuff.

NOt surprising, considering how stupid some people are in today's society. People make all kinds of stupid grammatical mistakes, even by people who claim they're so good in English. But it can read, I just choose not to. Cause I'm so damn lazy.

1 in 20? Pathetic, simply... Pathetic. I complain about grammar all the time, ESPECIALLY on RO. You have not seen me on the EuphRO forums (where I go not anymore), I loathe those who cannot spell please. I also loathe those who are too damned lazy to take a second to type THREE letters extra to turn 'pls' into 'please'. Somebody needs to hurt these people.

I can't stand improper grammar also. The occasional typo is okay, but not the way some people spell. Have any of you been to the compsci forums? God, those people can't spell or use correct grammar worth shit, and they're supposed to be programmers. People should be educated with this stuff at a young age so the trend doesn't continue at an older one.

Meh, I'm generally known as the grammar/spelling nitpicker on SMRPGL, but only because no-one else can be assed to do it. It's sad as well, because people can type some really interesting things from their point of view, but if they abbreviate every other word and omit nearly all of the vowels in the other half, then no-one is actually going to care. :\

This kind of stuff isn't only in the apple-pie land, either; here in the yoo-kay practically everyone I know who's around my age uses chatsp34k when they're passing round notes during lessons and whatnot. Some of them even use it in English lessons when we do extended writing.

You have got to be kidding me. In an english course? Well what did I expect....england has been taken over by the death busters anyway, so of course the next thing is that they'll teach you how to speak like that.

Well, it's not all of the time... But last term, we had to do a little short story thing (you know, the sort of stuff they make you write in English lessons) and then we had to swap with our partners so they could be checked over. And when I got my friend's letter... well, yeah. Nearly all caps, "u" for "you", one character's dialogue including the word "lol!!". And they're just the more major ones. If she hadn't been leaving that term, I'd have complained about it. But she was, so I didn't.
