Sam didn't want to remind Meg of that event, so he spoke instead.

"Umm, not right now. I don't want to trouble you with that while we try and get your sister back. I just hope we're not too late. But I must ask you, what have you been doing the past few years? You seem like you've went through alot."

-----------------

"Why this place is feared you want to know" Furidan said. "I don't know how to explain it without frightening you. Pretty much what most people fear is the creatures, which I already told you. There's also alot of volcanic activity, the occasional earthquake and great thunder and sandstorms. It's a barren near the perimeter and a great desert in the center. People tend to be overparinoid of such things, but this is what the Dwarves have experienced there. Though, it was thirty years since I last went there. It is possible some things have appeared and changed, but there's no way to tell unless we actually go in there."

Meg looked at the back of her hands, smiled and closed her eyes.

"I have been though a lot indeed... somehow you can read me like a book."

She shook her head, "I'm sure you really don't want to know everything i've been though, your Excellency. Most of it is very depressing and a good deal of it could be told by a campfire and pass for a horror story."

She self-conciously stroked the horse's mane and fought back tears. "there are so many things i wish i could go back and fix, so many mistakes i've made it's not even humerous. There are so many things i should have done... but didn't take the time to start or, if i did start, i never completed them..."

She looked at Sam and encountered a look she didn't quite understand. she took it to mean 'yes, i really DO want to know what you've been though' and looked back at her horse's mane as she ran her fingers though it.

"Well, if you must know... i guess i could tell it again. When i was eighteen years old, the war broke out. My dad was part of the militia and had to go to the frontlines to fight off attackers, and told me to take my then two year old sister and flee for our lives. i did as i was told, and lived in a small villiage a long way from here for about six years, raising Sasha as my own. But then i came back here, because i heard the war had ended... and i find Ruan almost completely destroyed, and my parents are nowhere to be found. I can only asume they have passed away, and I wish Sasha had more memories of them than the ones I have given her. But then again, I also wish they would have been happy memories instad of some of the horrible ones i have witheld from her. My parents became monsters quite frequently, and tended to neglect me. I think I know why, but that's coming up."

She clung to the horse's neck and buried her eyes in its mane to hide her tears.

"Sasha's also got some other problem i can't explain. sometimes, when she wakes up, she can't move to save her life. other times she can move, but it causes her so much pain that i can feel an aching in my limbs when i'm not even trying to read her mind, or even when i'm not in her company at the time. We've been to every doctor within five days walking distance of Ruan and the other villiage, and they don't know what to tell us...they just say she's fakeing it, but i don't believe them."

Her back quivered as she struggled for breath. she hadn't cried this hard since...since...

*flashback*

"DAMNIT NATASHA, GET UP!"
"Momma, please don't do this to me..."
"I SAID STICK OUT YOUR ARM!!!"

Mina held a knife in one hand and a bag in the other. She had an insane look in her eyes and about her face that made her look posessed by some evil power that yearned for blood. Meg could smell alcohol on her breath, and a funny smell in the air made Meg suspect she had been smoking something that was not in the traditional tobbacco her father brought home on sundays.

"HOLD IT OUT NOW!!"

Meg did as she was told and started crying very hard. the memory became blurred because of the tears in the 15-year-old's eyes, though she could still see the glint of the knife as it slid against her skin. She yowled in pain as her own mother cut into her arm, collecting whatever blood would flow out. When she had a bag full Meg's left arm was full of deep cuts and gashes and her flesh was white. She looked at her arm and remembered seeing the threads of manna that held her body together raise to the surface of the skin, feeling for whatever manna they could grasp to keep the girl alive.

Then Michael came home. His face when pale and he started yelling at Mina, oblivious that his pseudo-daughter was about to fall appart at her magical seams. Meg managed to get herself outside and collapsed for lack of energy. When she woke up, a younger version of Sam was sitting at the bottom of the tree while Meg was in the branches, vines covering every inch of her except for her head.

*end flashback*

Meg knew Sam had seen the entire memory in full, living color...her mind had screamed it at the top of its lungs, it would have been impossible for any telepath with a speck of power to miss. She looked at him with tear-streaked eyes,

"You saved my life that day, Sam" she said as her voice caught in her throat, "Those threads... in my skin... aren't blood vesels. they're manna strings."

She turned her face away and looked the other direction,

" Sam, i'm not human... i was created out of manna by a raving lunatic that looked to be about ninety...i have this memory of being held in a jar for many years, watching this raving madman age, and then...when he had perfected the shell i am now encased in... he dumped my soul into it."

She didn't dare look at him. she was afraid of what she might see on his face, a look of horror, disgust, dread or even hatred. She didn't want to see what horrors he'd think about her, about her family or even about Sasha.

"Sasha is normal. She is actually a flesh-and-blood human being, my parents biological child. I do not understand why she hurts this much, or why her speech is impaired. But I did notice that, while they were alive, they radiated more love toward her than they ever did toward me. I think that, because i am not a human being and not their physical child, they found it justafyible to ignore me, treat me as if i did not exist unless they wanted something from me. they did not know how to care for me, and so let me care for myself. I do not understand why they had done that, i was just as polite and kind as a normal human girl would be... and yet... they hated me because they did not understand me. Sam, I understand if you want nothing to do with me... ... you will not hurt my feelings if you don't. I just... ... I pray... if you are disgusted with me, or do not wish to be around me, please tell me without trying to pretend it away. that is what hurts the most out of everything i've experianced."

She clung to the horse's neck and cried, not daring to utter a word about anything else she had gone though while in the far away villiage: the attempted rapes, murders, the blackmail, the gruntwork... anything she had to endure at that villiage was going to be conveniantly left out, and for obvious reasons. Meg could barely draw breath without her body quivering from the effort, and the tears would not stop flooding her eyes. Some of the things that she could casually mention to Sam would bring an army's wrath down upon the whole villiage, and she did not want the innocent people to have to suffer for the stupid.

Meg just wanted to be held, to be told it was going to be alright... ... to feel safe and sane again.

------

"Sasha understand that. Sasha talk about land. Sasha heard talk land is posessed by demons, and..."

Sasha's voice trailed off as she caught Meg's memory, loud and clear. Tears welled in her eyes, "n-no...sasha momma not bad woman..." She started crying as well. Everything that ran though her mind could be picked up by the dwarf, including the entire memory Meg's mind had forced to the surface. Memories of picnics in the park with Meg conspicuously absent, fishing trips with her father while Meg was told to stay on shore with her mother, picking flowers with her mother to give to the newborn baby two doors down, laughing and making silly shapes with their hands, all mixed with that terrible memory as Sasha clung to the horse's neck and cried.

The horses seemed to be picking up on it too, and they started to panic and rear up in fear of the madwoman that would not exit their minds. Sasha was thrown off and landed on her back. She didn't get up... ... but was still crying.

Sam was shocked by what Meg had just told him. He moved his horse closer to her and put his arm around her.

"I'm very sorry to hear that you went through all of that. That must have been horrible, going through what you went through, without anyone to help you. My parents were dead back then, killed in some distant land, and I was wondering through the lands. But after soon after I met you, I was taken and placed in an orphanage. I was quickly adopted by the Queen of the human kingdom, as she was unable to conceive. They were told of my past and cared for me since. I was treated like royality. When I was old enough, I joined the army. I fought in several battles against the undead. I was successful and I rose through the ranks. I was then stationed in raun where I met this young woman and fell in love with her. I was about to propose right before I was called to war again. I battled for nearly three months, and victory was almost close. That was then several undead attacked my camp at night. They murdered most of us, and possed those who remained."

However speaking of this brought back a memory.

**FLASHBACK**

There was about ten tents, each one with about four men sleeping in them. It was at the dead of night near a battleground where humans and undead were still fighting. However, one was not asleep. He was looking at something in his hand.

"I promise that once this war is over I'll come back to you" he said.

However, the man looked around as he saw some shadows near the other tent. They were armed with swords. They procedded their way in cutting open the tents. The man watched in horror as the swords were struck though the sleeping men, causing them to scream. Those who were not killed awoke and hastily got up and reach for their swords.

"Undead, they're here" Sam said.

The people in Sam's tent made their way out of their tent, as did the others. They attacked the undead and killed a few, but the undead greatly outnumbered them. Those that survived fled into the forest, with the undead following them.

"We'll stay behind, Sam is more important than us" Sam heard one of them say.

Sam tried to object, but he and two others ran ahead. They didn't get far, as two undead appeared and killed the two men guarding Sam.

"Human prince" the undead said in a slow and snake-like voice. "You will service us."

The undead then grabbed a hold of Sam and one put its bony hand on Sam's face, causing him to scream in agony. The undead chanted in a language only they could understand. Sam's blue eyes turned red and he screamed no more.

"Who do you serve death knight" the undead asked.

"The dead ones" Sam replied.

"The humans. go and kill every one you see. They will join us in glourious undeath" the undead told him.

Sam then took their swords and made his way back to the camp where the undead were killing their prisoners.

"Death knight, start out your new mission by killing this scum" the undead said.

The human looked at Sam, with a look of terror and confusion on his face.

"Sam, you have fallen" was all he could say as Sam pushed the sword though his body.

**END FLASHBACK**

Sam too was now crying silently.

"They told me I killed nearly thirty soldiers until I was stopped. The top priests spent two full months performing painful exercisims on me. I then spent a who year in the castle for recovery. The possession made me forget about some events before the war, such as the woman I fell in love with. Meg, I think that woman was you."

-------------------------

Furidan was in panic, he fell of his horse, not knowing what he just saw. He saw the horses and Sasha acting strangely, but he didn't know what to do. He then thought one of his paladin powers could help them. He used his Divine shield first on Sasha, and then the horses. The horses soon calmed down after that and Furidan made his way to Sasha. He wasn't a father, but he remembered what his cousin Fazel did in this type of situation. Furidan then picked up Sasha and started to comfort her.

"Sasha, what happened there? I was afraid I lost you there"

Meg put an arm around Sam as well, not wanting to see him cry. She could feel some of the pain in his soul; it was a horrible feeling that she knew all too well. What she didn't get, though, was why he wasn't disgusted at her very existence. he was the only person who she had willingly told besides Sasha that didn't run away screaming.

"Sam... I'm sorry that happened to you. We have both seen much pain..." She stopped for a moment and thought, choosing her words carefully, "Sam. i don't know what i can do to help you, but i will do my best. Perhaps things will fade over time in each other's company."

Her voice trailed off as his echoed in her mind, "The possession made me forget about some events before the war, such as the woman I fell in love with. Meg, I think that woman was you."

She carefully brushed a few hairs out of his face and wiped away a tear with the back of her hand. She spoke again, this time with a touch of love in her voice that was most prominant at his name, "Sam... i think you are right... I have a memory that matches the description you gave before you were called to war."

She smiled her best smile at him. He was such a kind person...she didn't understand why the gods let him go though all that.

out of the corner of her eye she saw something move. She turned to see what it was, only to be rewarded with an arrow in the shoulder that would have caught Sam's chest if she hadn't turned.

----

Sasha tried to speak though her sobs,

"Sasha...get...very...bad memory... from...sister... ... sister... remember... momma... cutting her open... almost dying... Sasha not understand, momma kind person to Sasha."

She clung to the dwarf and tried to calm down. When her breathing had evened out she looked up at him, "Mr. Furdian... really scared lost Sasha?"

"Where did that come from" Sam said. He then saw an answer, it was an undead. Ever since his possession, he had a great fear of them. He then griped Meg's hand tightly.

"Undead" Sam said. "We should get out of here before we're killed or possessed. They usually travel in large groups. We must warn the villiage before it's too late.

----------------------

"Yes. We Dwarvs always take great pride and care of the young" Furidan said. "Most Dwarves start families by the age of twenty, but I decided not to. My late brother Frann only has one son who goes by Feazel. He has many children, who in turn have many grand-children, and even some great-grand-children. We Dwarves live long lives, I myself am over two hundred and fifty. We consider ourselves not as a race, but as a large family. We always band together when are lives are in danger. But if a Dwarf spends time with someone young of another race, they form a special bond. So that is why I was worried. This is also why I must find Brann before it's too late."

Furidan then placed Sasha back on her horse and gave the two horses apples to eat afterthey were spooked. Furidan then went up his and the two were on their way again.

Meg gripped his hand tightly as well as she glared at the undead minions that were advancing.

"I think i have enough manna to take care of most of their forces, if i play my cards right..."

She didn't wait for Sam to react before she raised her arm into the air and gave a rather odd smile to the undead,

"you want him? Through me first!"

A thundercloud rushed over the land at Meg's bidding and it started thundering above them. a large lightning bolt struck in the middle of their forces, which blew a third of their forces to bits. some of them stopped and looked at her kinda funny, as if assessing her abilities before they continued to march.

"these things have no fear, do they!?!" She put her free arm to the ground this time and grinned as the cloud thundered ominously overhead, "Well, they'll soon learn that their place is UNDERNEATH the earth rather than ON IT!"

She raised her hand suddenly and a small earthquake was sent toward the undead, though left Meg and Sam unaffected. five chasms opened among their ranks, and most of them fell in with with the aid of the earthquake. the chasms quickly closed themselves back up and Meg brought her hand to the sky again, "And another side-order of lightning on your doomsday dinner?"

one tenth of the army had remained after the chasms swallowed many of them, but now most of them ran like cowards. and they were running straight for the river.

Meg laughed, "My favorite element." She struck the three undead that weren't on the run, and the rest of them were at the river's banks. Meg leaned forward with her free hand outstretched, as if reaching for something. She whispered something almost uninteligible, and then yanked her hand back and sat up straight. She watched with a delighted grin as the river suddenly swelled, washing the remainder of the udnead army away with it. It quickly returned to its normal currents.

"Now, if they have re-inforcements somewhere Ruan's in trouble. that took the majorety of what i had."

Meg was looking straight ahead. though her skin was paler than it was when they started out, her eyes were still as bright as the river she had just manipulated. She flicked her hand and the cloud dissapeared after one final strike on the ground, revealing an otherwise sunshiny afternoon. She looked at Sam and smiled,

"Sorry...it's been a long time since i've practiced everything."

-----

Sasha nodded and smiled, "Sasha like Mr. Furdian, Mr. Furdian nice person to keep company with."

She hesitated a moment, trying to think of what she wanted to say. She sounded something out silently, then started getting a little louder with each attempt. by the time Furdian could hear she was practicing saying something, she turned to him and smiled,

"I th-thank y-y-you. *pause* You r-r-reemiiinnd *pause* m-mee of a-an oollld friend *pause* eye used t-to h-have, n-n-nam-med *pause* T-Tr-Tr-rixie."

Sam was rather impressed with Meg's abilities. He didn't know how quite to thank here, but he procedded to kiss her cheek. He then immediately backed away.

"I'm sorry. I should have asked" Sam said while stuttering. "That was good fighting. We could use someone like you in the army, except the King doesn't allow women in it. I'll talk to him about that next time I see him. I should have helped you, but that possession has affected me greatly. Before, I was brave and fearless, now I'm somewhat of a coward. I ask of you not to tell anyone that, I'll lose my reputation. That's why I have my body guards with me. I don't know if it's just the undead who turn me into a coward, or all enemies. Seig is capable of protecting the villiage, so it's best we get back on our way to your sister."

----------------------

Furidan tried comforting Sasha again.

"It's allright. It's completely natural to lose a friend" Furidan said. "Wait, did you say Trixie? Do you remember is she was a Dwarf? My cousin Feazel has a great-drandaughter with that name. She's around your age. If she is the one, after we're done, I can take you to my home and you can meet her."

Axis looked up from his drink as Deph approached. "Hello?" he said irritably. "You back with us now?"

She nodded. Axis noticed that the piece of paper in her hand had been flattened out and folded neatly. She held it out.

"Nah... You can keep that," he said.

Deph spoke again. "I... wanted to ask you a favour," she said.

He blinked. "Why would you need to ask? You know I'd -"

"I wanted you to take me to the Ether," she said. "But I didn't think you would want to. It's dangerous there..."

Something in Axis' recent memory stirred. That old man who'd he'd walked out on... hadn't he mentioned some kind of Ether? Yeah, that had been on the night that black thing came into town. He twitched at the thought.

Deph looked hopefully into his eyes. Reverse psychology, eh.

"I'm gonna go look for Zekat again," said Axis abruptly. "He's probably on the roof, I think his visitors have gone now."

Without another word, he left his drink on the table and stomped up the stairs.

Why do I get the feeling he doesn't want to see any more of me? she thought.

Meg blushed heavily and her heart skipped a beat when Sam had kissed her. She smiled and gently touched the place he kissed her cheek, "You don't ever have to ask, Sam."

She looked at him and smiled, "I'd be honored have a place in your army. And, I promise I won't tell a soul about anything that you just said."

She looked down, "You're a kind person, Sam. Don't let anyone else try to tell you otherwise."

She gave him a playful grin then pointed to two trees that were a long way down the path, "Race you to those trees in the distance."

Meg watched him and waited to see if he'd accept the race.

----

Sasha was taken aback at the Dwarf's words,

"Sasha not loose friend. Sasha try speak like normal people. Sasha need think before Sasha speak if want to sound adult, but Sasha stutter. Trixie is dwarf like Mr. Furdian, she say she move back home be with family. Sasha like see Trixie again!"

She smiled. The air about her seemed to radiate with her excitement, "Sasha miss Trixie, Trixie teach Sasha how carve, whistle, make flower grow."

Sasha looked around and saw a lone flower - a weed - on the side of the road.

"Mr. Furdian watch weed-flower."

She coaxed the weed into growing a bit taller and spreading its leaves a bit more in a couple of seconds. She smiled as she told it to quit growing and it stopped.

"Sasha like flowers."

Sieg looked up. In front of him was the mercenary. He greeted him weakly, and stared off into the distance. "You know, he's not in the best shape, you could try kicking him." A voice sounded from a building down the lane from the 'NN'. It was the cloaked thief, hard at work picking a lock, with a couple of bodies lying unconcious next to him. A gang he had gotten on the wrong side of in Garuden, nothing of true import. "Or, failing that, you could get him on the move, I'd like to see this 'Ether' that was mentioned before. He had, of course, listened to Riotus speaking to them before, which he found very interesting, indeed.

"Well, I'm not much of a racer, but" Sam said, but he didn't finish his sentence as he moved his horse to ride off.

Sam for the first time in a while felt happy. He had found someone he met before, and knew that she was someone important to him. He thought about taking her back to the kingdom, where the King was.

--------------

"That's impressive for someone your age" Furidan said. We Dwarves usually don't get any power or find our class until about fiteen years of age. I happen to use fire elements and be a paladin, but paladins are so rare for Dwarves. Only one in about a thousand are paladins. Most are warriors and hunters, with the occasional priest and rouge. But I'll take you to see her once we're done here. I'm telling you, Feazel has so many children, grand-children, and great-grand-children, it's so hard to keep track of them all. That's why Dwarves don't have family renunions. Well then, let's get back to the mission. These horses are quicker than I thought, we Dwarves are used to riding rams. It's only less than a day now to the enterance."

Meg rode off as well, starting a second later than he did because her horse wasn't facing the right direction. She laughed as she rode, urging the horse faster until they got to the trees. Sam had beaten her by that one second she had started out late.

She laughed and smiled at him as she moved her horse closer, "good race."

Meg hadn't felt this alive in ages. She wanted to meet his parents, even if they were his adoptive parents. She wanted to know about his past, how everything looked though his eyes...she wanted to know everything there was to know.

Her left arm started tingling really badly and she realized she hadn't taken the arrow out of her shoulder. She looked over at it... She wasn't used to having random arrows protruding out of her, but she did know that leaving it in would prevent excess bleeding. She reached up to touch it, so she could pull it out... and then felt her manna rapidly draining away.

"gods..." She pulled her hand away and noticed her manna quit being drained away. However, it was too late.

She collapsed onto the horse's neck, spooking the horse. It took off running in the direction of Sasha and Furdian, zig-zagging along the way and throwing Meg off about two hundred feet from where they had originally stopped after the race was finished. the horse had lost its rider, but refused to quit running.

-----

Sasha smiled, "Sasha thank Mr. Furdian. Sister taught Sasha a little manna-tricks."

A horse cam running up to them and reared up after almost coliding with Sasha and her horse.

"Horsey okay, Horsey not danger."
The horse seemed to calm down a little at the child's voice and quit bucking, but retained that paniced look about it.

She read the horse's mind and found out why it was spooked.

"... Sister and man-king come after Sasha, say bad thing Sasha go with Mr. Furdian. Say if see me, make war on human lands. This true, Mr. Furdian? See Sasha, make war on mankind?"

Sam saw Meg's horse run by, but MEg wasn't on it. Sam was worried and called out her name, but there was no response. Sam then ran his horse back to wheere Meg was. It was about ten minutes until he saw her on the ground. He noticed an arrow in her arm. Sam jumped off his horse and ran to her. He quickly took out the arrow and threw it away. Sam panicked, as he didn't have much medical knowledge. He had some linen cloth in his pocket, and used it to wipe nearby blood off her arm. He then took what was left and wraped it around the cut as a bandage. Sam knew that Meg needed medical attention, but didn't know what to do. It was a day one way to Raun where the undead were approaching, and it was a day to the Dwarf who was a paladin, but he was also advancing. however, Sam then noticed three corpses on the road. He went up to them and noticed they were orcs.

"Orcs, what were they doing out of their lair. At least the Dwarf killed them. Perhaps they have some medical equipment"Sam said outloud.

Sam then searched the corpses and found something that looked like it could revive someone. Sam took it and rushed back to Meg. He frantically poured the liquid down her mouth, hoping she would awake.

------------------

"What. No, there's no war" Furidan said. "You certinely won't cause one anyway. Please, we must do this. As long as we stay in the perimeter we'll be fine. We're only about ten hours from the enterance. Trust me, everything will be fine."

The foul tasting liquid certainly did wake Meg, Though she wasn't very responsive because of her low manna level. Her vision was blurry and she was very pale. She was able to recognize his brainwaves, though she wasn't probing his mind. she didn't even have enough manna for that, and it was something that came easily to her.

Just then the potent liquid took its effect. She arched her back as far as she could arch it to try to get away from the fire-like burning sensation rushing up and down her spine. after about five minutes she was fully awake and looked like she had just run all the way from Ruan.

"... S-Sam... "

She was still weak from what had just happened, and she only had enough manna to keep her body intact. Her hands shook whenever she held them in midair and her normally bright, blue eyes were a dull grey-ish color now. Her eyes also reflected a look of pure terror, as she didn't remember how she got on the ground or why she was so dangerously low on manna.

She sat up and hugged him,

"Sam! Sam i'm scared, how did this happen? all i remember is manna flowing away from me at an allarming rate when i tried to touch the arrow in my shoulder, and then everything went black."

She softly sobbed into his chest, not knowing what to do.

-----

"Sasha trust Mr. Furdian, everything be fine. But Sister and Sam man do not, Sasha wonder why?"

Sam then hugged Meg back, trying to comfort her.

"It's gonna be all right" Sam said. "I know that the undead are probably at Raun, and I don't want to go near them and there's probably more lurking around here. I did hear that Dwarf speak of manna pools in that land he's going in. There's one a few miles into it. I don't like it, but I fear it's the only option we have. We should contact your sister to let her know."

------------------

"I don't know the answer to that" Furidan said. "Perhaps your sister wants you to be with her, or it could be something else. I'm not forcing you to go, so it's up to you."

Meg weakly nodded but didn't let go just yet. She felt safe in his arms, even though she was weak. She didn't want to move, but something told her she was invading his personal space. She let go and pulled back,

"I'm sorry for all of this. You've been though enough without me falling off my horse after encountering an undead manna-draining arrow."

She put her hands on the ground and closed her eyes, Sasha... can you hear me?

Sasha's face lit up before she could answer Furdian. She stopped her horse and looked at Furdian, "sister try talk Sasha."

Yes, i'm here. what is it?

Meg smiled, Well, we're about a day behind you. turns out an army of the undead came after Sam, and i used a lot of my manna killing them all off. got shot in the left shoulder with one of their arrows, and when i went to pull it out it drained the rest of my manna. She paused, then opened her eyes and looked at him with the best smile she had, He saved my life again. but it's not over yet... we need to catch up with you. Sam recalls Furdian saying there are manna pools inside the land you're going, and we're closer to there than to Ruan.

Sasha frowned and looked at Furdian, "Sister hurt bad, need manna. Want come with for few days, reach manna pool. Okay with Mr. Furdian?"

Furidan thought this over for a minute.

"Yes, they can come" Furidan said. "We'll set up camp here and wait for them to arive. Tell your sister I said they can come. I know whe way to the first pool, it's not too far. It's usually unguarded becausee neither the orcs or centuars know how to use it."

----------

Sam then helped Meg get backup.

"Your horse ran off, we'll have to share this one" Sam said.

Sam helped Meg get on the horse and he got on behind her.

"Just let me know when to go."

Meg wished her horse hadn't run off, but she didn't mind sharing a ride with Sam at all. She thanked him and sat as still as possible while she waited for her sister's reply.

Sasha nodded, "Okay Mr. Furdian. Sasha thank Mr. Furdian!" She brought her horse as close as it could get and gave Furdian a bear-hug before contacting her sister again.

Sister, we're waiting about a day down the road for you. Mr. Furdian will lead the way to the first manna pool, it's not that far and is usually unguarded. We found an extra horse running around spooked, do you think it's yours?

Meg smiled, thank you sister. we're on our way...and it probably is, if it's a white one. the poor animal, i must have passed out on it.

Well, whether you did or not i know your original reason for coming up here was to stop me from going into that land. Sister, i thought you trusted me and the dwarf?

I do, but Sam's not too sure. He's the prince, Sasha, he knows more about this place than i'll ever know. anyway, we're over and out. see you in a bit.

See ya.

"She said they're waiting about a day's journey up the road from us. we can leave as soon as you're ready." She smiled and touched one of his hands - her hands were cold.

Sam's hand then started shaking but stopped thirty seconds later.

"That's an after effect of a possession" Sam explained. "Sometimes you can still hear them call you. It only happens every so often, but it's painful when it does. My body turns cold and my hands start shaking."

Sam heard a voice in his head.

Death knight. Kill. Kill the scum.

Sam then battled the voice.

NO! I can't. Just leave.

You are strong death knight. Kill it. It doesn't deserve life or death.

Leave. I won't harm her. I won't harm soneome I love!

The voice screamed in Sam's head and then said no more.

"It contacted me" Sam said. "It told me to kill you, but I fought it off."

-----------------

Furidan had just finished setting up a tent.

"Here, you can sleep" Furidan said. "We Dwarves can go without it for a while and I'll keep watch. It's getting late."

Meg took one of his hands in hers and let him drive the horse with the other, "I heard...That voice was too strong to ignore, I'm sorry... I'm so sorry you have to go though this... you are not the Death Knight any longer." She let out a small chuckle, "You have already become my knight in shining armor. The two titles don't mix well."

She smiled and gently rested her head against his chest, "And... just to let you know... ... I love you too."

She brought his arm around her stomach without breaking the connection and closed her eyes, but didn't let herself fall asleep. She figured if she did she'd knock him off, and she didn't want to ruin this. She felt impenetrable, safe with him near her, even though she had heard for herself the undead calling him. She also felt kinda wierd... she knew she couldn't be floating, as floating takes manna; but it almost felt like there wasn't any line of contact between her and the ground at all. She remembered a little of how Sam made her feel before he was called to war... and this was it.

----

Sasha steifled a yawn, "Sasha thank Mr. Furdian. Sasha very tired." She gave him another bear hug and climbed into the tent. She fell asleep as soon as her head hit the ground.

Sam felt rather comfortable. He didn't speak, so instead he spoke telepathically.

Once we get you healed, I'll take you back to my home. You can live in the castle for a while. You can meet the King. However, he's changed since his wife died a year ago. He's become rather angry and aggressive. He is also very prejudiced towards non-humans, sexist, and close-minded. He's also became slightly ill. It would be most advisable not to tell him about your true orign. He wouldn't want me assoiciating with you, and he might even try to harm you. I want to continue where we left off before the war.

-----------------

Furidan was still walking around at night. He had a tight grip on his axe in case someone tried to attack him.

Something then moved behind a bush. Furidan quickly turned around and raised his axe. However, what he saw was highly unexpected.

"Brann" he asked. "Is that really you?"

"Yes. Furidan, it's been so long" Brann answered.

Brann appeared out of the bushes. He looked almost the same as Furidan, except his beard was bronze. He did have several open cuts and was extremely malnourished. Furidan took some meat and water out of his bag and gave it to him.

"I was just about to go looking for you in there" Furidan said. "How did you escape?"

"I used a spear to work my way though their prison. I couldn't tell why, but the day I made my escape, the Centuar were spooked by something. They acted all mad and started to kill each other. I managed to escape while they were distracted" Brann said.

"You saved me some time off my journey" Furidan said.

"You're still going there" Brann asked.

"Yes. I brought with me one of the spheres the Gods made. I'm going to destroy that cursed land" Furidan said.

"Fruidan, it's impossible" Brann said. "The demons have returned there. I saw them with my own eyes. They even destroyed Waterside and corrupted in desert areas."

"That is why I must destroy it then" Furidan said. "I don't want the demons coming to this land and others. Brann, I must ask of you to go to the villiage of Raun. It's two days away from here down this path. Warn the people. I have a spare horse you can use."

"Very well, your task must be done" Brann said. "You with someone?"

"Yes. She saved my life actually, and wants to come with me. We were going to rescue you" Furidan said. "Just take this meat and use the white horse. If you see two humans come by, tell them that you're Brann."

"I understand brother" Brann said as he was getting on the horse. "It least now the Firebeard family can at least be reinuited."

Brann then rode away, leaving Furidian and Sasha alone again.

Axis leaned over the edge of the roof. "Hey, thief. Listen in if you really have to, but for Asper's sake, shut up!"

He turned back to Zekat. "So... you doing okay now? I saw you out cold earlier... Maybe you should take a break for just the one night."

The rifleman made no response, but tightened his grip on his gun.

I'll take that as a no, Axis thought. He tried a different line of conversation. "Say, you know that wizardy person what came in when the black wossname was in Ruan? Yeah, I know I walked out on him. Guess I shouldn't have... But you know, I think he mentioned this thing called the Ether. You happen to know where it is?"

Meg was comfortable too, and would swear she started to melt on the spot if she hadn't opened an eye to make sure she was really still intact. She smiled - She didn't want to speak out loud either. She gently passed her thumb over his knuckles as she spoke telepathically,

I would very much like to meet the King, and continue where we left off, that would be wonderful Meg thought to him, I am very sorry to hear about the Queen's passing. I can try to heal the King, if he will let me give it a try. Well, given that no one utters a word about me not being human. I won't tell him, I don't want to risk throwing us away from each other again.

She paused for a second, as if calculating what to say or how to say it.

I'm so glad you found me! I missed you something aweful.

She gave his hand a slight squeeze and then shut her mental yapper. She had indeed missed him, but it came in the form of a dull ache near her heart because Sasha had erased most of the memories the two had created together before they moved.

-----

Sasha had stirred and rolled over when she heard Brann and Furdian talking. Then she went on sleeping, dreaming of things before the war and before their flight of Ruan.

Deph remained at the table where Axis had been sitting, not sure what to think.

There was a small leather bag on the chair. Deph picked it up carefully and weighed it in her hands. He'd left his money here.

Same idiot as he's always been, then, she thought, smiling to herself. At the same time, though, she felt slightly resentful. They'd always been close together, Axis and Arbalen and her. They'd hardly ever argued or fought, hardly ever fallen out over minor things. And now, here was her own brother leaving in such a hurry that he hadn't even stayed around to check he wasn't leaving any of his worldly possessions behind.

Deph shrugged and sat down. People changed over the years. He had, obviously - she could never have envisioned the slightly timid boy she'd known before she'd run away growing up to become someone who solved their problems through violence. And so had she. The Master had taught her many things. Some of them were worth knowing.

Someone had obviously been around to clean the windows, because you could actually see out of them now. From where she was sitting, Deph could just make out the burnt sign outside. The letters "NN" were painted on its wooden surface. It swung gently in the wind. Back and forth and back and forth and back and forth and back...

Deph fell into a contented sleep, the tankard beside her forgotten.

Sam smiled and continued to talk telepathically.

I'm happy to hear that. I wish I could say the same, but that damn possession made me forget about you. I often think now what could have been there if that war didn't happen. But now that I have met you again, we could continue where we left off? Sasha could come and stay with us in the castle with the Dwarf if he wants to. When I become King, then you could be Queen. That's if you want to of course.

However Sam's thoughts were inturuptted as he say a short man on a white horse come by. Sam heard him yell "I'm not Furidan!"

"Meg, I don't recall there being two dwarves" Sam said. "Where'd this second one come from?"

Yes, i'd love to continue where we left off...

Meg froze in one spot as her heart almost quit beating. The last time she checked, to be a Queen one must be... must be... married to a King!

Sam... ... I... I'd love to be a queen, just so long as you're the king I get to stay beside.

Meg's eyes popped open at Sam's question, "I have no earthly idea. If i saw it while by myself i'd say i was delusional. but then... ... his brainwaves are slightly different from Furdian's."

Then a thought came to her and she let Sam hear it, Wait, i remember Sasha telling me something about Furdian having a brother named Brann... that was part of their reason for going into that dark land. Hmm, let's test this theory.

"Hey Brann! Catch!"

Meg used an extremely small ammount of mana to bring a stone to her hand and mark a B on it and tossed it his way.

Brann was riding along, but he didn't hear the warning. The stone hit him clearly in the head.

"Ouch" Brann said, though a little dazed. "You're Meg and Sam, right? Furidan told me I'd come across you. I escaped from the Centuars, because the demons spooked them, but Furidan's still going in there with that girl."

"Why? Wasn't the whole point of them going in there to find you" Sam asked.

"Well, Furidan's still going in there, says he's gonna use some sphere to call the Gods to destroy it and kill the demons. I've come to warn the villiage in case the demons come here and something happens to Furidan" Brann said. "No I must be off, and by the way you two make a good couple."

Brann then sped off leaving Sam and Meg alone again.

Meg blushed very heavily at that comment and smiled. Even the dwarf seemed to know what was going on.

"Some...stone to call the gods? So that's why sasha kept her mouth shut." She said, "Very interesting."

She focused ahead and thought to herself, Sasha, what have you gotten yourself into?

Sam then chuckled at the Dwarf's comment.

"Seems like everyone knows about us now" Sam said. "Don't worry, when you live with me everything will be private. But that sounds dangerous what the Dwarf is going to do, but I trust that he knows how he's going to do it. Come on, we better not stall any more."

Meg nodded, "yeah, no more stallings."

a love song she once swore she'd never sing to anyone but Sam sprang to the front of her memory and she started to sing. Her voice was beautiful and hit all the pitches in such a way that made them sound good - though some of the pitches were out of place and she started a key lower than she should have.

The song told of a love that crossed billions of miles and was stretched thin over many years of being apart, and how the couple got back together and everything worked out in the end. When Meg was done singing she blushed bright red and realized that it wasn't a song anyone had made up before - it was her own words put to verse, and then put to song.

She closed her eyes again and smiled as she fiddled with Sam's free hand, lacing her fingers through his and then unlacing them in different patterns and positions until she found one arangement - palms together - that she liked the best, and this time when she laced her fingers with his - she didn't unlace them.

-----

Sasha had a very nasty dream about the things to come and sat straight upright as she gasped for air. She was cold from sweating and pulled a blanket over her as she tried to shake the images that flooded her mind. She was finally able to do it and went back to sleep.
