Meg had greeted Sieg with a polite "hello" and gone about her business. Sasha was still asleep as she tended Sieg's soldiers. when she was done she got up, fixed some breakfast and sat down near Sieg and Axis just in time to hear the challenge.

"With all due respect, i think Sieg would win," She said. She took a sip of water, "he seems like the type that thinks quick on his feet."

Sasha stirred, "Sister?"
Meg gulped down the rest of her breakfast, smiled at the two and went over to Sasha.
"what is it Sasha?"
"my tummy hurts."

Meg sighed. another one of THOSE days. Sasha would have trouble moving.
"Alright. just stay there and i'll help you."
"Sasha, take me to see the grumpy-man."
"Grumpy-man? there are lots of grumpy men here, Sasha."
"Seig."
Meg sighed and picked up the child. She sat her down near Sieg and let her eat what little bit was left of her breakfast. then Sasha spilled the beans.
"Sister fight with Mr. Seig?"
Meg shook her head no, "Sasha, don't...he doesn't know i helped him."
"That will soon change, dear sister. Did you like sister's help?"
Meg turned bright red and looked away from Sieg.
"I didn't do anything, Sasha."
"Yes sister did! sister made the river swell and swallow bad men."
Meg just sat there in confusion - there had been an earth-mound over Sasha, so she couldn't have seen anything...but she could have read her mind. Sasha was sneaky like that.

"Yeah, i did. but they weren't all swallowed, Sasha. some of them are still alive."
"How sister know this?"
"Let's just say i had each of them marked when the water touched them."

Meg was avoiding everyone's eyes, especially Sieg's. She had always thought her magic was a terrible curse, and everyone cursed with such a thing should keep it to themselves. Sasha had always thought differently, not knowing that her mother had beaten Meg each and every time she used her magic.

"Sister fight with Mr. Seig? We are from same town."

Meg looked down and away from everyone, just waiting for the rejection to hit her in the face. she could almost hear it coming and see her mother's face contorted in hatred for her gift once again and it brought tears to her eyes.

"Sasha...how could you... Yes, but i've never really fought anybody before. most of the time they just run away screaming because of my freak-ish-ness. I doubt Mr. Sieg would want someone like me in his army, though i'd help if he wanted me to."
Meg continued to look at the ground, her hair covering her eyes so no one could read them.

Furidan wasn't paying attention to anyone. He was keeping himself busy by making his breakfast, which consisted of some of the Dwarven bread, some meat from a boar he killed the previous day, and some famous Dwarven malt. He made his sandwitch, and sat across from the woman and small child. But Furidan was deep in thought. What was that dream all about? Why were his dead brothers in it? Why was a raven calling his name? Who distracted him from it?

Furidan would not let them have any idea what he was thinking about. They would obviously pity him for what he went through, and as a Dwarf of proud standing, that would surely dishonour him. Furidan took a few more bites out of his sandwitch before he was back in thought.

But perhaps they could help though. This Seig person seems reliable, and these others probably have powers that could help me find Brann. NO! This is a Dwarven matter and should stay onne. We Dwarves have always been on our own, that has been the way since the Gods made us. But Brann is out there somewhere, I can feel it.

Furidan had then got up and took out his axe, knowing that someone in the room had read his mind.

Sieg instinctively stood up and had his gun out in a flash. "Sir, I won't allow you to disrupt the peace of this village, now sit down. My men need rest, that axe isn't going to help," he said, as calmly as was possible. "The small girl is a mind-reader, yes, and if that disturbs you, please keep it to yourself." He wasn't entirely sure when he had learnt of Sasha's powers, but he could read every line on the stout man's face easily, and he was sure of this. The 'NN' was frozen in silence for a few moments, then, with an axe and a rifle glinting in the sun. Sieg's hands did not shake, which made him very good at picking off his foes in the distance. His rifle was the only one among his militia that was without a scope, such things were common back when they had been produced. Instead, he simply felt his hands guided by an unknown force. This is, however, beside the point, as Sieg was standing with the barrel of his rifle no more than a foot from the man's nose.

This unknown force was in fact Sieg's Godhand. The Godhand is a specially developed power that has been passed down through the Zekat line for generations, since the time of the Eldrenian. Each functions differently, in this case it perfects his aim to a godly level. The two most prominent Godhands would appear over five millenia later...

At this moment, Axis got up and raised his spear, separating the dwarf and the gunner.

"Break it up, break it up," he said loudly, aimed less at the two he stood near and more at the other people in the "NN" who had paused out of curiosity. "You don't want to be fighting amongst yourselves in a place like this. The army will do that job for you, I reckon."

The innkeep scowled, disappointed, and returned to polishing his grime-covered glasses with an equally filthy rag. Slowly, the rest of the "NN" followed suit and continued with whatever they were doing.

Once attention was no longer focused on them, Axis stepped between the two and turned to face Zekat.

"So that's settled, then," he said, his voice suddenly reverting to the almost-whisper he usually employed. "Me and my longbow will see you at sunset on the roof of this building."

He walked outside with his ragged cloak trailing behind him, hoping to enjoy the sun while it lasted.

Sasha's eyes had gotten wide and she didn't move an inch - partially because she was physically inable and partially because of fear. Meg jumped up as soon as the axe came out and hid behind Sieg with Sasha in her arms, heart beating rapidly.

"Just who does this dwarf think he is???"
"He's a King. he's used to his privacy. Let me see if i can fix it. Sasha only trying help Furidan find Brann. Furidan not want Sasha help?"

Meg's thoughts were reeling, "a king? that dwarf is a king??? wow, just the fact that he's out of his land says he's on a quest of some sort...and sasha said something about him looking for his brother...a noble quest. i'm sure Sieg'd need his help as far as manpower is concerned, and a dwarven king is usually very skilled with an axe. He'd be a very powerful ally or a very deadly enemy."

before Furidan could answer Sasha relayed those thougts of Meg's to him, so only he could hear the voice of her mind in his head. Sasha peeked out from behind Sieg and met the dwarven king's eyes, letting him know she respected him deeply.

"Sasha sorry Mr. Furidan. Mr. Furidan not hurt Sasha now?"
Meg's heart was still racing, "Thank you for helping me protect her, Sieg. she's the only family i've got left."

"I apologize. I don't know what's gotten over me" Furidan said as he put down his axe. "I haven't been at ease the past few weeks. Certain memories have been haunting me. I've evaded some Centuars, whom my species have been at war with for generations. My brother Frann, died in the war. My other bother, Brann, is still out there somewhere. He went into the Centuar's land, and he hasn't appeared since. If you help me with that, I will forever grateful. I might even ally yourselves with the Dwarves. We could be a powerful ally. If not, I'll be on my way."

Sasha smiled, "it okay, Mr. Furidan. Sasha help!"

Meg sighed. she had wanted to help Sieg, but she needed to go with Sasha to make sure she didn't get herself into trouble. After all, when she couldn't move she couldn't move...and she wasn't sure Furidan would understand that. also...he had said something about being an ally...so she hoped that Sieg would consider it and -hopefully- accept the offer. if not...she would have to train carrier pidgeons before anyone left for anywhere, and that would just be a pain in the ass.

"I have to go with Sasha to care for her..." Sasha said as she stepped out from behind Sieg. She looked up at him and gave him a smile, "i had really hoped to go with you, Sieg... ... i really did. but i couldn't stand not knowing where my sister is, i'd break down in the middle of a battle, distract someone and end up getting a bunch of people hurt, and no one wants that. i'm sorry..." she looked at Furidan, "Mr. Furidan, you have my magic."
"Mine too!"

Sasha relayed those thoughts to Sieg to let him know where Meg stood, without so much as batting an eyelash. She wanted to see her sister near Sieg, which is what she wanted, but then again Sasha wanted to help the Dwarf-king, and she had already pledged to help him. She wasn't about to take back any promise to a king.

Sieg nodded in Meg's direction. "I see, Furidan. Let's hope we don't meet on the opposite sides of the battle, perhaps fighting together would be a much better encounter. Now, however, is not the time for such things, I can feel a black wind moving across the land. I have some things to think about before nightfall." He said, turning with a cough. His entire body felt heavy, and he was slightly dizzy. He tried to recollect himself with a shake of his head. Now's no time for weakness... I'll have to be stronger... As he walked, a thin blue trail of mana wisped from his right arm. I don't know why, but I feel that Issvyar's hand is being attacked... At this rate I won't make it to see tommorow. He caught himself, and found a chair to sit in, until sunset.

Meg had watched Sieg go to the chair and noticed the mana-trail that came out of his hand. "That's a bad sign..." Meg thought and put Sasha down.

"Sasha, i'm going to make sure Sieg's alright. can you walk on your own?"
"Sasha don't know," Sasha said with a pained smile, "But Sasha try!"
"Show me."

Sasha took a few steps with Meg holding her hand before she let go. She walked slowly and the pain she experianced was reflected in her eyes but not her face. She walked over to the Dwarf and hugged him - or so he would think it was a hug. she was really clinging to him to keep her balance. Meg could tell.

"Perhaps you should stay with me, Sasha?"
"No, Sasha stay with Mr. Furidan!"
Meg lowered her eyes. "So, you care for the dwarf more than me? That's fine. then maybe i should go with Sieg after all. Alright, as you wish. i'll be around if you need me."

Meg got up and walked off, ignoring her sister's unspoken appology and explanation. She didn't want to hear it...She was afraid Sasha'd end up like her parents - an excuse and a half for everything and everything that happened and no real action. she wiped a tear from her eye before she went over to Sieg and sat on the floor next to him, "Hey, you alright? your hand's leaking mana."

Sasha felt really bad that her sister was sad, but she had promised Furidan and she wasn't going to go back on it. she wasn't like her parents. She remembered very little of them, but what she did remember was not a plesant memory.

*flashback*
Sasha heard Mina talking to Meg. Mina was promising that as soon as she got done with the work on her desk she'd take Meg out to market and let her buy something for her birthday. She was a week late. Sasha remembered she had made something for Mina and got out of bed to get it. she fell down with a soft thud many times until she got to the place she had hid it and picked it up. She also had something for Meg. She toddled to her sister's room and fell down right inside the doorway.

"Sister, i have something for you. I'm sorry about being late about it, but here it is."

Meg hurried over to Sasha, picked her up and took her over to her bed. Sasha held out a hand - a ring was in it. It had a crystal clear blue stone in the center of it and had wierd markings all over it. on the inside Meg's full name was engraved.

"Sasha how did you get this?"
"Asked smith down the street. he said he'd make it for you because you were so nice to him. The stone's got some sort of magical abilities in it, i don't know what it does. Well, it's from me and him both. Happy birthday sister."

Meg slid it on her right ring finger and smiled - it fit like a glove. the stone had glowed when she put it on and the markings glowed too. after a couple of seconds it went back to normal and Meg felt weak.

"Thank you Sasha. What's this in your other hand?"
"Gift for momma."
Meg shook her head, "I don't know why you'd want to give her anything, but alright. I'll take you to her room."
"No, sister, Sasha want to do it by myself."
"Well alright, but hang onto the wall and put the necklace around your own neck so you can walk better and catch yourself if you fall, alright?"
"Okay sister. thank you."

Sasha left the room with a smile on her face. She was trying her best to walk on her own. She'd made the necklace for her mother and wanted to give it to her herself instead of having her sister do it - meg always seemed like the type that considered anything and everything a burden, and she didn't want to be a burden. The fragile necklace was around her neck and her hands were gripping the wall so she wouldn't fall over...she wanted to do this by herself.

"Momma, i made something for you."
Mina jumped up at the sound of her daughter's voice so strong in the back of her mind. normally the child's mental voice was weak from her room, so she had to be close.
"Sasha, why did you get up by yourself?!?! you could have gotten hurt!"
"Momma i wanted to give this to you myself. Meg doesn't like running errands for me, it bothers her."
Mina picked up the child gingerly and stormed toward Meg's room. she pounded on the door,
"NATASHA RAINMAKER, GET OUT HERE THIS INSTANT!!"
Meg opened the door with a confused look on her face, "Yes mom?"
Mina promptly slapped Meg, "You told Sasha to walk to me herself, didn't you? DIDN'T YOU??"
"mother she didn't try to talk to me at all, not even mentally..."
Meg was silenced by a second slap to the face, "DON'T LIE TO ME!!! YOU'RE GROUNDED! You KNOW Sasha can't walk on her own, do you WANT her to get hurt???"
"No, mother. i don't. But i sure wish you'd just leave me the fuck alone! Sasha will ask something of me if she wants me to do something, and i don't mind doing things for her. so just FUCK OFF!"
Sasha's eyes went wide as she tried to speak for the first time and failed, "S-S-S-Shas-s-sh-shat sh-sh-sh-sh-shtorr-r-r-r-r-r-ey sh-sh-sh-shish-sh-sh-sht-t-tert."
Meg got slapped another time, "WHAT DID YOU THINK TO HER???"
Meg's eyes watered from the pain of it all, "nothing. i didn't think at all. I'll just die, if that'll make you happier."
Meg slammed the door in her mother's face and promptly locked it. Sasha remembered Mina beating on the door with one hand, and holding her up with the other, not paying attention to what Sasha had to say about the delecate necklace that was around her neck. She quietly took off the necklace and put it around her mother's neck while she cursed at Meg again. Sasha started to cry in inaudiabe sobs as she fought to get down.
"Momma let me down, i'll go to my room. momma, please let me down and let Sister alone. MOMMA!"
Nothing. just more rage at Meg. Sasha took a deep breath and tried to speak clearly again, and failed again:
"M-m-marh-mm-m-m-mah..."
Mina suddenly froze and looked at Sasha with tears in her eyes, "I'm sorry baby. I've been ignoring you again, haven't i?"
Sasha Nodded, "Momma like necklace?"
Mina looked at the necklace around her neck and smiled, "Yes, i love it baby. thank you." She gave Sasha a kiss and put her back in her room. she then went back to her own room and slammed the door.
"I sorry sister."
Meg looked up from where she was crying on the floor towards sasha's room, "It's alright Sasha, it's not your fault. It's mine. it's mine for not being what mother wants me to be. Do yourself a favor, never question anything she says and always hang on her every word. then anything that you do will be liked and you won't be like me."
"But sister, i want to be like you..."
Sasha's thoughts trailed off as Meg relived the first memory of being beaten. she was five years old...not too far away from Sasha's age. Sasha shivered and cried because of all the pain she could feel in her sister's thoughts, of the detailed pictures she was reading. then the promise of going to town for her birthday replayed in her mind, and there was great pain there as well...Meg had known it was a lie.

Sometimes, her mindreading abilities were a curse.

*end flashback*

The stone in Meg's ring started to glow when she got near Sieg and wouldn't quit glowing at all. Sasha noticed this and smiled, Now i know what it does. It keeps her power in check when her emotions would open the flood-gate and drive her to the point of insanity...Must be hard. She kept clinging to Furidan until she regained her balance and smiled up at him, "Mr. Furidan like sister?"

Meg kept talking with Sieg until nightfall, when she fell asleep with her head on the arm of the chair, near Sieg's arm. The gem in her ring quit glowing the instant she fell asleep and started dreaming of a perfect world...

Sieg sighed, and pulled off his right glove. There was a eye-shaped scar upon the back of his hand, the mark of the Godhand. It was at the moment glowing blood-red and mana was continuing to flow out of it. He replaced the glove and looked back to Meg. "It's time..."

He made his way, with heavy breaths, to the roof of the 'NN', and hailed Axis. "Something ill comes this way, the blackwinds are howling about this place like a hurricane. Fate has something in store for us." He didn't wait for a reply before leaning near the edge and surveying the distance. Something seemed wrong, it seemed unusually dark, but only in one place. As if there was something there, blocking out light... The darkness flickered slightly, revealing a figured, wrapped in a torn black cloak, who flickered back into the darkness. "That blackness moves... like fire..." he said, his voice faltering. He was getting light-headed, his vision fading in and out. Please... Issvyar, please grant me just a little more strength...

Upon a crest overlooking the lake, some ways from Ruan, a solitary cabin rests. It appeared to be nearly as old as it's inhabitant, a wizened old sage by the name of Riotus. Riotus looked out his window, as a candle behind him vanished in a wisp. "It is here... The artengena has fallen into the hands of mortals yet again..."

Meg had been woken up at the sound of Sieg's voice. something about it being "time" for something had her curious. she rubbed her eyes and followed Sieg outside. She made herself ready to catch him if he fell. she was used to helping out like that.

"It DOES move like fire..." She was being affected too, but in a different way. her emotions were being pulled into her core all at once, and her blood was starting to boil with everything she started to remember. Her ring glowed bright blue and the markings on the ring snaked themselves around her arm, followed by more markings appearing on her other arm and legs. The effect of the ring started to kick in and she remained level-headed as she struck a deffensive stance and lit her right hand on fire. "It's in for one hell of a fight if it tries to get at anyone in Ruan. even if it's passing though, there's a great deal of evil around it. i doubt anything will leave un-affected. Hell, my ring's working on overdrive just to keep me sane..."

Sasha heard her sister's thoughts and clung to her new friend tighter than ever, "Something's outside Mr. Furidan! It's scarring me!" Sasha grabbed Furidan's hand and tried to pull him towards the door, "Mr. Furidan kill the evil please!"

Meg heard her sister's last sentence. "Good! please get him out here, we'll need a lot of help it looks like. this thing has ENOURMOUS power, it's messing with my emotions and Mr. Sieg's physical health!"

Meg put her left hand on Sieg's shoulder to make sure he didn't fall. She opened and closed her fist that was on fire, channeling the energy from the fire into her hand, though her arms, and into Sieg. or at least, that's what she was trying to do. Whether it worked or not depended on Sieg's leniage - if there were no abnormal beings in his bloodline he could recieve it, but then that was most people in Ruan. if he was related to anything that wasn't human, even in very far-reached history, nothing would happen at all.

I hope this works...Sieg's got more experiance in battle than i'll ever hope to have. he needs the energy in this fire more than i do.

without warning her ring quit glowing but the runes on her body remained. they started glowing as well as Meg's awareness was heightened. she could see clearer and hear a little better, and could almost feel the physical status of everyone around her except that black figure. Sasha was in a state of panic, which was never good for anybody - last time she panicked she nearly destroyed the town they were hiding in, but no one knows how.

Meg kept on staring at the figure as it moved closer and kept trying to pump the energy the fire was producing into Sieg. She knew he'd be the key player in this endeavor, and she was only there for supporting crossfire.

Furidan wasn't comfortable with the girl clinging to him all day. He wasn't much of a father, as he never married nor had children of his own. He managed to put up with it though, as he didn't want to upset her more than he already did. When nightfall came, the girl got tierd and he set her down on the bed.

"If you still want to help me, you got to know that where I'm going is highly dangerous. The continent of Kalgoure is one of the unsafest in the land. An army of ten thousand wouldn't even break its defenses. Even if you get in, it's filled with the cannibalistic Centuar, the savage orcs, dragons, and other vile beasts. It's no place for a child. I'll let you think it over if you still want to help me." Furidan said.

Furidan left the room, and made his way to his own room. He quickly wrote a letter.

To Illias Thunderbeard, King of the Dwarves of Mountainridge

I hope this letter finds you well. These are dangerous times for the land I'm in. Thr quest for Brann is still on, I have not given up hope. I have made contact with the leader of an army. He could prove to be a powerful ally with us against the Centuar. Likewise, we could prove to be a powerful ally to him. I ask of you to indeed help out one Seig Zukat. He's some leader in a place called Raun. I want you to immobalize a force that will drive out the attackers. Mountainridge has never been breached, as the magial doors will keep any known beast from entering. Send out half of our armyy to meet him in glourious battle. Do this not for his land, but for us as well.

Furidan Firebeard

Furidan put the letter to the envelope, which he marked high priority. He made his way down to the enterane, where he confronted a guard.

"I need you to deliver this high priority letter to the Dwarven King of Mountainridge" Furidan said.

"Mountainridge, never heard of the place" the guard responded.

"You must be joking" Furidan responded in amazement.

Before the guard could answer, a loud screech was heard. Furidan looked around, and spotted something in the sky, causing him to gasp.

"Bless the Stars, Grom" Furidan called out.

Everyone looked around to see what was making the noise, people pointed at a creature flying through the air. It slowly made its way down, andlanded beside Furidan. People admired this beautiful creature, as it was indeed a legendary one. A gryphon flapped its wings as Furidan petted it.

"Grom, I thought I lost you. That blizzard must have been horrible on you" He said as he cooed the creature.

"See that he gets a proper stable and food" Furidan called out.

The guard and another did as they were told, as furidan put the letter in his pocket.

"That can wait to morning" furidan said to himself.

"For the first time in several weeks, Furidan was finally happy. Knowing his journey won't be so lonely after all.

Sasha thought it all over very carefully.

Canibals? centaurs? i've heard of centaurs, but not canibals...a dangerous place, he says. I like dragons, i've met a nice one before.

she remembered something else he said - "An army of ten thousand wouldn't even break its defenses... ... perhaps i can mind-read the captain of the defense's army and make him create a spot we can land in. Orcs? never heard of them. well, this should be an adventure."

She got up from the bed and walked around until she found him, "Sasha still want to help. Meg coming with us, she protect Sasha if Mr. Furidan busy with something." She gave him a toothey smile and then looked at Grom.

"ooh pretty birdie!" she said with a giggle. she walked right up to the creature and started petting it. "Birdie belong to Mr. Furidan?"

"Yes, heis mine. Normally, gryphons are hostile and agressive by nature, but we Dwarves have tamed them. We use them primalary as transport and as attack units for war. They were a great aid to us in the Second War. Thank you for your help, and I hope you know what you're getting into. But it's too late to explain all of the details now. I'll explain what we do first thing in the morning. I will try to get more help and if not, we will be on our way by lunchtime."

Sasha smiled up at him, "Sounds good to Sasha. Sasha go to bed now." She limped inside, and Furidan could tell she was in great pain...but she was walking by herself. Sasha collapsed on her bed and was instantly asleep.

Meg continued waiting for someone else to act, and wasn't happy staring at that black figure. it made her nervous. it reminded her of her mother when she had one of her town-famous temper tantrums...the evil she had stored up seemed to radiate from her as if she was on fire. now there was this black creature...100 score more powerful than her mother. she wasn't sure she could handle something of that magnitude.

Axis leaned over, maintaining a cautious grip on his spear. The figure wasn't moving, the darkness around it still. It inspired terror merely by standing there. Axis found, surprisingly, that he didn't want to get a closer look. What was it doing in Ruan?

He swayed a little, but managed to catch himself and stepped backwards onto a flatter part of the worn-down roof. He felt light-headed. Not a feeling alien to Axis, by any means - but he hadn't drunk anything today, or yesterday. In fact, he'd had almost nothing except what the "NN" could provide for him since he left Garuden, looking for Deph on the word of some local men. It seemed an age away now.

Looking around, Axis could see the effects of the figure's presence weren't just limited to him. The creepy older girl who had also been in the "NN" yesterday was standing in the street, looking mortified. The blue ring on her finger shone like a beacon amidst the fog, and she was shaking.

He remembered a story his mother used to tell him. It was the story of a man in a magic kingdom, and he fought against an evil wizard who drained the happiness out of his victims by strangling them with a black cloak and left them for dead, wandering the countryside if they survived. He couldn't remember the ending. He started trying to think of what his mother had said, mostly to take his mind off the... the thing nearby.

"The black wind... travels up," he said slowly, then stopped and swore under his breath. Why did he just say that aloud?

He turned to look at Zekat, who hadn't seemed to notice. He was fidgeting.

"Hey..." said Axis uncertainly. "What's with your hand?"

Sieg was panting deeply now, Meg's magic having no effect on his Eldrenian blood. "Look... The mana I'm losing... That thing is absorbing it." He said with staggered breaths, pointing with a shaking finger. "It's the Godhand... It's attacking it, somehow..." He looked to Axis again, his face pale as the moon, reflected in the lake. His hands were quaking now, he could barely hold his rifle, much less shoot.

Like a hurricane, the black winds run through. At last the figure moved, it took a step forward, followed by another, setting off at a slow pace towards the 'NN'. I can feel it here, around that person, swirling about them. What black destiny does Fate have in store for us? Sieg raised his gun slowly over the ledge, and his finger tightened around the trigger.

"Wait!"

Axis grabbed Zekat's arm and pushed it aside. The rifle clattered onto the tiles.

"That thing can drain mana, which is what the damn world lives off," he hissed. "Think a bullet's gonna stop it? No, I didn't think so either."

The figure was now walking almost underneath the roof where the two men were standing. Axis could see it a little more clearly. It was tall and bipedal, but it didn't feel human. Every step it took was slow and precise, almost calculated.

...like fire...black wind...travels up...

"I think we should get down," said Axis.

Meg let the fire in her hand die and kept on supporting Sieg. Damnit...and i don't know how to transfer mana yet, that's too complicated for a person of my skill level... i could mess something up and end up leeching mana from Sieg! i want to help though...damnit i can't remember how it works...

Meg nodded and turned to Sieg after a brief pause, "I appologize in advance for this..."

She picked him up with trembling hands and jumped down on the opposite end of the 'NN' as the thing stood and set him on his feet.

So it drains mana...no wonder my ring's working on overdrive... she looked at her ring and noticed it was pulsing in some sort of strange pattern she didn't understand. it wasn't morse code and it wasn't anything else she had learned. the markings on her arms and legs were pulsing just opposite of the ring's pulses - almost as if they were trying to call something from inside her. Meg suddenly felt very brave, even though her body was still shaking as if she were terrified.

Meg sat Sieg down and went over to Axis, "You're right, a bullet won't stop it, but do you think elemental attacks could do some damage? I can give it a whirl and see what happens, though i only know a few things to counteract darkness..."

Sasha stirred in her bed. the thing was right outside her room.

No...no please go away...no hurt Sasha! no hurt Sasha!

She started crying very loudly in her sleep and shaking like a leaf, screaming for help as she saw images of some of the things her parents did to her and meg became fresh in her memory and she felt the scars once again.

"Elemental attacks wouldn't," Axis said abruptly. "You saw that thing go past, didn't you? You felt it. Black wind, like fire..."

That still leaves earth and water, his conscience nagged.

Axis shrugged half-heartedly. He hated it when you were cleverer than you thought. "Meh, I guess it's worth a try, just don't do anything than it might benefit fr-"

He blinked and looked over the edge of the roof again.

"It's gone inside! Why are we still up here?! Hey... wossname... girl, isn't your sister in there? Come on!"

Axis slid off the roof, landing lightly on the protruding windowsill of his own room and climbed inside. Holding his spear tighter than ever, he pushed the door he'd left slightly ajar earlier and started to make his way downstairs.

Meg had nodded at Axis' description of it, Wind and Fire-like. Well, Earth blocked out wind and water put out fire. She grinned, "alright, i'll do my --" Meg's eyes went wide with terror, "SASHA!"

she was already on the ground so it was easy for her to get inside, but what to do about Sieg? she didn't want to just leave him there, but bringing him in might hurt him more than help him. Still, if she left him there no one knew what would happen to him, and Meg didn't want to take that chance either.

She helped him inside and locked the door after they got in. She sat Sieg in a chair and gave him a little of her mana to keep him conscious, then ran toward Sasha's room. she saw the thing stadning right outside the closed door.

"OI! get away from there!"

The thing stood there for a moment, calculating something, then slowly turned around and faced Meg. the evil inside it swelled.

Meg felt faint but kept her position. "Leave right now and i won't have to hurt you."

The evil swelled again just as Axis found them. Sasha screamed inside,
"MAKE IT STOP, SISTER MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!"
Meg felt fury swell up inside of her like a tidal wave. all at once everything quit glowing and the river swelled to three times its normal size, which made the water stop right outside the walls of the 'NN'. Meg's hand twitched ever-so-slightly and water that seemed to appear from nowhere surrounded her. Her eyes went bluer than they usually were, if that was possible. she bared her teeth at the thing,
"Back away from the door and you won't drown."

The evil swelled again, forcing Meg to her knees. The water held its place though, and started whirring about angrily.
"i'm serious. Get away from that door."

The creature took two steps forward. it was within arm's reach of Meg.

her vision faded in and out as she clung to consciousness, "you asked for it."
She closed her eyes and started chanting something. she felt the water pulsing in circles around her and the evil trying to take control of her; it placed a seething hatrid for Axis, Sasha, Furidan and evin Sieg Zekat...especially Sieg. the anger was starting to show in her face and the evil swelled again to overtake her.

"DIE!"

Meg thrust her hands toward Axis and the water followed their path. Meg looked at axis and saw the evil she was trying to fight.
Wait...the evil wasn't on the stairs...it was...it was trying to get Sasha!
Meg turned her arms just in time to have the water miss Axis and whip around, so it gained more speed. it hit the creature, slamming it against the wall and waking up Sasha. The creature didn't move and Meg's vision came back as she collapsed onto the floor - that had taken most of her strength to beat that evil. The creature wasn't moving, but Meg couldn't tell if it was still alive or not...she still felt evil coming from it but a reduced ammount of what it used to be.

Sasha cautiously opened the door. She saw the evil against the wall, Axis with an "Oh-mi-god-i-can't-believe-what-Meg-almost-Did-to-me" expression on his face and Meg collapsed on the floor. She very cautiously stepped out with one foot, still ready to slam the door,

"Sister? Sister Okay?"

Meg sat up and leaned against the wall, "no but i will be." Her ring switched on again and the markings on her arms and legs started to glow and pulse again. She felt energy coming into her and smiled. a survival function...how conveniant, my energy levels were dangerously low. i guess when i first got this from Sasha it took as much energy as it could siphon off of me and stored it for moments like these...makes good sense. brilliant, actually.

Sasha heard that and panicked. she ran over to Meg and clung to her, burying her face in Meg's stomach.

"Sasha...go back...in your room...it's...not dead...yet..."

Sasha got up darted back into her room screaming. she slammed the door on the evil's hand, promptly shoved it out with a stick, slammed it again and locked it. she then started piling things in front of the door.

Good old Sasha...always...a frady cat... Meg managed to put a sizable ammount of earth in front of the door and halfway buried the evil. then she passed out.

Axis relaxed again. For one moment, he had thought - no, but it wasn't her fault. He'd felt it, seen it in her vivid blue eyes. A flash of red... It was gone so quickly that it might never have been there in the first place. But Axis knew better than that.

The thing was crushed under a large earthen pile. One of its black-gloved arms was sticking out from underneath. He poked it with his spear. No response.

It's out cold...

He stepped over its body, twitching, and looked to the girl, who was now crumpled on the floor nearby. She was much paler than she'd looked last night. Axis wasn't sure whether it was the effect the... whatever it was had had on her, or just the lighting. He ring was glowing like blue fire. He knelt down and took her wrist.

Yep, she'll live, he thought.

He started to wonder what he was doing here. He had agreed to work for Zekat, even though the man probably didn't have anything to pay him. Which meant that Zekat was the one giving him orders. Zekat had never told him to go after the shadowy figure. It seemed the girl had been more than capable of dealing with it herself. He'd seen her.

Axis shrugged half-heartedly. He'd go down and tell the innkeeper what had just happened on the second floor, then he'd go back to see how Zekat was doing. The thing had stopped doing whatever it was doing with the mana, anyway. Zekat's hand was probably fine now.

(hay Hiro! Can we have more than one character? I know that Neo has, but I'm checking to see if it'd be all right to introduce one a little later)

(Back-ness. To answer thine question Pyt: Yes, you can have more than one character. Let's see, this puts us all... *reading through older posts* Right)

Sieg stirred slightly, and he blinked slowly into conciousness. The mana had stopped flowing from the Godhand, something he was very thankful for, though a thin glow of mana still illuminated the room. He blinked again, he didn't remember being in a room, he remembered being on a roof, with his rifle readied. Slowly the door creaked open, candlelight from the room beyond flooding through. A voice called out to him, but he was still too dazed to make it out. Sieg shut his eyes and shook his head, opening them again to find Axis looking down at him.

"Well hello there... What in the nine hells happened?"

Axis and the others finished retelling the events of the last few hours to him, and Sieg nodded slwoly. All the color had gone from his face, leaving it a pale, almost otherworldly color. His movements seemed frail and cautious. A voice murmured behind the group, "You see... This is what happens when you possess things you know nothing of." An ancient-looking old man, with a tattered robe and hat giving no honor to his magical prowess, had been standing in the door of the 'NN', eavesdropping on them. He smiled slightly, the lines upon his face darkening. "I'm sorry, I haven't yet introduced myself, my name is Riotus. I'm a sage of sorts, some may call me a wizard. I deal mainly in the... theoretical end of mana-weaving." Mana-weaving was an Eldrenian term, in the common tongue, for magic. This man was not an Eldrenian, though he was very old and had himself seen the end of the Eldrenian race, though this was not known to any of the others in Ruan. To the others, he looked to be only an old, eccentric wizard, far past his prime, which he indeed was. "That... thing, outside. I saw it using an old, forgotten magic... The artengena, the black fire which consumes all light and hope." He paused slightly between each word, trying to remember something forgotten almost entirely from the world of Derun. A strange quiet had come over the 'NN', and all of Ruan.

Meg stirred a little later. She had some energy to work with now and sat up.

"Hmm? ow, my back..."

She looked around and noted the large pile of dirt that covered sasha's room and the evil that she had fought before. She sighed - she knew why she had passed out... a lack of energy that massive would have killed off anybody else. but why not her?

She sat and pondered this for a moment, also noting the thin layer of manna in the air. She drew a little from it and moved the dirt away from Sasha's room before she stood up.

GAD my legs feel like pudding... what happened to them while i was out? i don't remember them being this weak when i passed out...

She knocked on Sasha's door. "Sasha? it's safe to come out now, but the thing is still where it lays."

She heard scraping inside of the door. when Sasha came out she gasped - was something wrong with her? She knelt beside her sister, "what's the matter, Sasha?"

"Sister has different eyes."

Meg looked around - everything DID look different... clearer, somehow. It was as if someone had wiped a bunch of dust out of her eyes after a long time...everything was very crisp.

"What's different about them, Sasha?"
"They're brown now."

Meg raised an eyebrow. her eyes had changed color? "Odd. last i checked they were blue. ohwell, come downstairs with me. i'd like to see how Sieg is doing."
"Okay sister."

Sasha took Meg's hand and led her down the stairs. For a small kid she certainly knew how to lead somebody around.

When they got there Meg's eyes instantly fixed on Sieg. She noted his pale skin and the tired look he had about him. that really wore him out, and she could tell. She walked over to him and sat beside him on the floor opposite his godhand. it was then she spotted Riotus.

"Sasha, read his mind and tell me who he is and why he's here."

"It looks like his name is Riotus...he calls himself a manna-weaver. i'm not quite sure why he's here, his mind is difficult to read...it's almost as if he thinks in code. but then again that could just be because i'm sleepy."

"I see. thank you Sasha."

Meg's hand trembled a bit as she touched Sieg's hand and looked at him, wanting to make sure he was alright.

"Aah, i see my dear sister has a crush. you forget i can read you like an open book, Meg."

Meg blushed, "Perhaps you can read my mind like an open book, but can you read emotions too? If so... ... ... you'll understand why i act this way."

Sasha hadn't really thought about it that way. she closed her eyes for a second...a faint outline of a third eye appeared on her forehead as she attempted to read her sister's emotions...her soul.

"This...this is...sister what is this?"

"I don't know... but it's coming from him."

"I don't understand, sister... it's in you... but you say it comes from Zegat... what do you mean?"

"You'll understand when you're older, Sasha."

Sasha opened her eyes and noted the expression on Meg's face. it was a mixture of concern and awe...something Sasha hadn't thought could go together without driving the vessel of such corrosive things to insanity. She looked at Riotus again... she was suddenly afraid and clung to the nearest person's leg.

(Whee. I guess I don't have to fill out another character sheet, because she's already been sort of introduced, then?)

"Um... Mana-weaving? Wizards? Arthejiwossname?"

Axis had never liked the thought of arcane powers. In his eyes, magic was something unnatural, something that people shouldn't be able to command. You could break a lance, a blade, a bowstring, even a rifle, but you couldn't break someone's mind quite as easily. That's what Axis thought, anyway.

The sage turned his impassive gaze to Axis at this outburst, who tried to stop himself from shuddering. For a moment, he considered asking the old man... no, it seemed like that guy hadn't seen anyone in years, the way he spoke. But it couldn't hurt...

Deph had been interested in magic, despite Axis' and Arbalen's assertions that it was dangerous. She'd often search through the local library for books on the subject (not that there were many of them), and then stay cooped up in her room for days on end. Axis had never actually seen her perform any, though. And she never mentioned it in conversations, knowing how much her brothers hated it.

"Old man," Axis blurted out, "what exactly IS mana-weaving, anyway?"

---

Several miles from Ruan, a girl slowly climbed up a hill. The ragged remains of what might have been a coat at some point were wrapped tightly around her skinny form. It was quite a warm night, but she was shivering.

She reached the top and hesitated. Ruan was visible from here even in the dim light - a mass of small buildings at the foot of the hill. Smoke rose from the village into the night air. Beyond that, the still surface of the lake reflected what little moonlight managed to find its way past the clouds.

The girl gave a small yelp and collapsed. A small golden cross on the ground marked where she fell.

Riotus cleared his throat, trying to remember how to say the words he had been researching and logging for the past many years. "Mana-weaving... Is the use of mana to... influence the world around the caster." he said the word with an emphasis that shook his entire frame. "Mana-weaving, magic as you call it now... Is not controlling the natural world, but rather... influencing it to change. Mana is the life essence of all things, it stems from..." he paused for a second, furrowing his brow, "All mana comes from this... other plane, called the Ether. It is a... Nexus, at which all worlds are joined." Blank stares came from everyone in the room.

Riotus sighed, and began explaining something else. "The human soul... is nothing but a large grouping of mana that has been forced together by pressure. The soul seeks out a suitable container, often a newborn child, and it slowly creates it's own identity. Our souls are what allow us to weave mana, the soul extends some of it's own mana into the world around it."

"But isn't that dangerous?"

"The soul can... rebuild some of itself after a short period of time. It sets aside a portion of it's mana... that can be used for mana-weaving." Riotus sighed, and turned to the window. "This rain is unnatural, someone is trying to control the world using mana... Such a foolish quest."

At the comment about the soul being a lot of mana Meg gently squeezed Sieg's hand. So that was why he was so weak? it had been an attack on his soul though his hand, which seemed to be the epicenter of his manaflow. it suddenly made a lot of sense to Meg as she continued to siphon off mana from the air little by little and shared it with Zekat. She wasn't sure if he was regaining mana or not, but she would certianly make sure he was alright before she wet anywhere. her ring gave a faint glow as it stored some of the mana she took from the room for later use. perhaps, the reason i have this is because my soul doesn't store enough mana to heal itself after a major beating... yeah, i think that's it.

Makes sinse to me, sister. perhaps we can figure out why your core is slightly deformed if we read more into what this Riotus character is saying. Sasha gave Riotus a smile, "Mr. Riotus show Sasha Ether-Nexus? Sister does magic, Sasha curious."

Meg slapped her forehead with her free hand. Sasha had a way of over-simplifying things to the point of insanity. her ring quit glowing as it had reached the storage capacity. Whatever Zekat wasn't getting was going into that ring, and then started to work on her soul to heal the wounds she had incured from fighting the evil.

"Hm...the rain IS rather unnatural..." Meg said as she looked out the window. She knew she had made the river rise, but she hadn't used rain to go about doing it. she closed her eyes and tried to influence the raindrops to quit falling from the sky. she let the river go back down to normal as well, if it hadn't already.
