Though it's only been six months since the release of the PSP in Japan, its games have been selling poorly. For the week of May 23 to 29, only four PSP games remain in the complete top 50 sales ranking charts of Media Create and Dengeki Online, and none cracked the top 20. The lackluster sales are a result of few major releases this spring.

During the last full week of May, the PSP saw the release of its anticipated new puzzle game Intelligent License, but it appeared in 22nd place on Media Create's chart and 38th place on Dengeki Online's. Other recent PSP releases, Derby Time and Dorasulot: Shuyaku wa Zenigata, slipped below the top 30, but managed to stay above the top 40. The only other PSP game in the sales charts is Minna no Golf Portable, which currently holds 36th place at Media Create and 40th place at Dengeki Online.

On the other hand, six Nintendo DS titles ranked in the top 20 of the two sales charts, three of them being different editions of Nintendogs. Two DS titles ranked inside the top 10: SD Gundam G-Generation DS and the laboriously titled Touhoku Daigaku Mirai Kagakugijutsu Kyoudoukenkyuu Center: Kahashima Ryuuta Kyouju no Nou o Kitaeru Otona DS Training, a brainteaser and education game codeveloped by Nintendo and professor Ryuuta Kahashima of Touhoku University. This latter game features innovative gameplay and design, and translates to English as Touhoku University's Future Technology Collaborative Research Centre's Professor Ryuuta Kawashima presents: DS Brain Training for Adults. Additionally, Bura Bura Donkey (DK: King of Swing), a Game Boy Advance title, weighed in at 17th place. The DS rankings are all the same on both the Dengeki Online and the Media Create charts.

Nintendo seized the opportunity to release Nintendogs during the typically slow spring season. The company further strengthened the game's sales by strategically shipping it right before the golden week of national holidays in Japan. Nintendogs has been a major hit in the country, and it boosted sales of DS hardware from 21,698 units to 96,191 units during its first week of release. DS sales continue to lead the PSP and PS2 for the week of May 23 to 30. According to Media Create, the dual-screen handheld sold 39,687 units, while the PSP sold 21,996 units and the PS2 sold 35,143 units.

There have been 39 titles released for the PSP thus far, eight of which are published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The number of games available for the DS is nearly identical, with 37 titles, 14 of which are from Nintendo.

ROFL!!!!! Are kidding me...3 different versions of Nintendogs leads all PSP games?? 3 different versions of nintendogs....what a joke. It's why I've been calling it BSP. The damn thing is expensive to develop for. Don't believe me...ask capcom reps why they canceled alot of projects for the PSP. And then ask Nintendo why the DS is outselling this thing.....one game, Nintendogs. In my opinion it'll be a future pack in title for the DS, and it'll be to the DS what tetris was to the game boy.

What's even more of a joke....is that the DS even outsold PS2 for 8 days!!!! The PSP had a joke of a showing at E3...and it just shows you who's gonna win this battle. So all you psp lickers can shut up. Your handheld is offically OWNED.

Yeah, Nintendogs is supposed to be one of those games anyone can pick up and have fun with. It's going to be the next tamagotchi or whatever. But I better see some good DS titles here in the US or it's no go for me. Outside of Lumines, the PSP is not worth my time.

I still like my PSP; of course I like my DS too. The whole thing is that the PS2 had almost no good games for it’s first year, and look now … I’m still unsure about all of this.

Yeah and check this out.....my source told me recently that Sony doesn't have some chips or something ready yet for the PS3.

If you ask me, Sony might be rushing things and they might pull the same crap Sega did with Saturn...except not launching it too early. I doubt sony will do that, but I think they'll rush this thing out the door just becuase of the Xbox 360.

Yeah, PSP is doing pretty awful. Nintendogs looks awesome too. PSP is going to get a huge boost with Advent Children though....

I see the big game being Pokemon Pearl/Diamond. :P

DS has won in Japan. And in the coming months we'll see the real positions in the US. I also doubt the PSP will get a bigger strangehold in PAL regions.

The Sony fanboys will not like this. The DS has won Japan. I don't see what's so great about the PSP anyway.

I still say everyone is calling this one way to early; the Dreamcast did fairly well in the beginning and look what happened to it. Business is not as simple as you guys are making it seem. I’m still not sure which I like most …

I know the business isn't as simple....but come on, when you got hardly no decent games, and 3 versions of nintendogs winning....it just tells you something. Hell I have yet to see a single....psp game commercial. Sony has been back to showing those psp ads agian. And whenever I see movie release ads on DVD...they also include psp. Now how are sales for UMDs so far? I doubt it's anything to be excited about.

The two platforms has been out for a while....and psp has yet to really make a dent on the DS. Hell Nintendogs is gonna be coming out here in the USA next month. Where is PSP's big game??

Anything bigger than the DS is annoying, I have stupid girl pockets, and they can't hold much. All I carry is my DS, PSP is kinda annoying, my brother has one, and he just keeps it in his car. I think he has 4 games for it or so. I hate it only because the CDs are so much smaller, and it's not like the PS2 where you can play old PS1 games, or just watch any DVD. I think that's why I hate the PSP so much, because my brother has Spiderman 2 for it.. which means we can't watch it anywhere else but the PSP.. that seems annoying to do..

SK has some points, A strong start doesn't neccesairly mean a strong finish. The N64 is testimony to this. However, the DS has many distinct advantages over the PSP, and the PSP is having trouble getting any.

1. Hype for the PSP has died down
2. PSP game sales are yet to get anywhere
3. The good exclusives everyone is waiting for aren't coming, or are coming really late
4. Because of the expenses to develop on the PSP, the DS can get almost 3 games out in the time it takes to get 1 PSP game
5. the DS has been out longer, and the PSP isn't catching up on scheduel.

Sony has their work cut out for them.
