Earlier this week, we reported that Nintendo would be demonstrating something called DSpeak at its Electronic Entertainment Expo booth this week. After experiencing it hands-on, we can tell you what it is: Voice-over IP using the Nintendo DS' wireless and microphone capabilities.

Nintendo's booth has two systems at remote locations for the DSpeak demo. Both systems are connected to each other using the WiFi internet capabilities of the Nintendo DS system The demo is incredibly simple: using a connected headphone/microphone piece, you speak into the microphone and listen with the earpiece. You essentially hold conversations using the Nintendo DS over the internet.

The demo features a 3D Nintendo character on the upper screen, with a wavelength meter displayed on the lower screen. On my screen was Mario, on the other guy, Wario. Mario moved his mouth to the sound coming through on the other guy's end, though the model couldn't differentiate standard voice and surrounding noise...so Mario kept moving his mouth since there was ambient noise in the Nintendo booth. The delay between the two systems was extremely minimal, similar to what you'd get when two people on cellphones are trying to converse with each other. I could see the guy speak to me, and the delay was only a couple of milliseconds due to the compression and data transmission. Audio quality was perfectly fine, as good as a mobile phone.

Whether or not this application will ever come to light is still up in the air...right now it's just a concept demo. And, at the very least, it worked.

Well this makes me wanna get a wireless internet router now. Max pretty much sold me on it too with some details we discussed. But yeah...isn't this awsome for the DS? Forget Xbox Live Chat....i'm ready for some Nnitendo DS chat!! Come on Nintendo....you gotta release this!!!

What would be even cooler is if the thing would let you use the DS as one of those Wi-Fi phones. Then you could actually use the DS as a phone, versus a chatting device...

It would be neat if you wouldn't need headphones. So you'll just hear the other voice out of the stereo speakers.

Yeah, so other people can hear?? Uh...no...I think I'll use headphones. Who'd be crazy enough to let other people hear what you and say...your girlfriend..is talking about on the DS?

This Mod Has No Title
Yeah, I'd want headphones. Sadly, only one of my "friends" has a DS, so this feature would be pretty much useless for me.

He just kept talking in one long incredibly unbroken sentence moving from topic to topic so that no one had a chance to interrupt. It was really quite hypnotic. - Captain Picard

Yeah well they could then add the feature no headphone, or put in a headphone.
