Oh well I am glad that I indeed did hack Adi's mind. :P I knew right from the moment it would be Europe that it would be in Southern Europe, that he wouldn't pick a capital because that would be too cheesy, so he would make it look like a big challenge by a slightly impossible random place, but one place that would even give the non-Europeans a big chance to win this because it's known. So:

19 - Is some other international dialling code for France
That villa looked exactly like those you'd see in Southern France.
Ice + Tourists from other continents. = Google Ice Saint Tropez.. and then I found out that there's a popular alcoholic drink that was called: Ice Tropez.
And then name of the game one, Saint Tropez hosts a thousand fancy sporting events, and American Football is everything but posh. Which explains the: the name of the game isn't important one, sound right.
And then I stopped paying attention to the clues :P

But I didn't know that apparently there's more for non-Europeans than Cannes, Saint-Tropez, Monaco... oh what the heck Pisa :P And no one gives a shit about Twilight here, I dont'even know what Twilight is about :P

I did not get ANY of the clues. I just decided to go south from that first picture and then I followed Adi's instructions and randomly ended up kinda close xD

Twilight?

Sorry Marjo, but i'm European and i don't know Volterra... :s

That's what I said :P the non-Europeans managed to get Volterra out of this. While the Europeans were like WTF, where's that? And I think that Adi deliberatly chose such a place, but I don't think he expected that he'd make it impossible for the Europeans by choosing exactly that place :P

I thought that you'd probably want some explanations. So, now i'll try to make it at least a little bit more clear. It was absolutely possible to make it to Volterra without knowing anything of "Twilight" as only one clue was strictly "Twilight"-related xD The key was to understand at least one of the clues in full. So, let's remind ourselves how did the road to Volterra look like:

Stage 1

The picture you had was actually taken in Volterra but it (hopefully) wasn't easily trackable, because it not a tourist attraction but a pic taken inside a hotel. Hotel San Lino, to precise.

"19" was maybe a little tricky (i loved Marjolein's explanation btw., as i thought of using a dialing code as one of the clues as well!!). "S" is the 19th letter in the English alphabet. In georgaphy, "S" stands for South. So, if you kept just going South without turning to the West/East at all, you'd reach Volterra in (at most) 7 Stages (Gbg and Volterra have almost identical longitude).

Stage 2

Okay, that was not ice but it's most likely clear already! It's salt. For many years Volterra has been one of the biggest salt producers not only in Italy but also in the Mediterranean area. It is still famous for its fennel salt & porcini salt and both are the symbols of Volterra & the products bought by the tourists most often. Well, at least they used to be the symbole of the city before ..

.. "At one point, our Final Destination became quite popular among tourists from a continent far away. Especially among female tourists". Yeah, this one mentions the "Twilight" hysteria, which resulted in many American teenagers (mostly girls) coming to Volterra to see the place where Edward & Bella (two protagonists of S.Meyer's book) got reunited. Here, i have to salute to those who got this clue right, as i thought that not many of you would look for "the one point in history" in the 2000's. From now on, "Twilight" has not really been mentioned until Stage 8.

Stage 3

Since "the name of the game was not important", you had to pay attention to different things than him being a football player. You might wonder what was the important thing, since there was nothing more in the picture. Well, this player was dressed in a Villanova Wildcats' jersey. It's not a pro team but a well-recognized college team, mostly known for its basketball teams.

But how was it all related to Volterra? We have to move back in time to explain this. And this time we're really moving way back! The earliest Iron Age culture of central and northern Italy (today's Tuscany), abruptly following the Bronze Age, was called the Villanovan Culture. People living in those area are during those times are sometimes refered to as "The Villanovans", just like the players representing the Villanova University now. Interestingly, the name "Villanovan" comes from a village, which it a part of modern Bologna, a city, which two of you have also been to!

Stage 4

Dara was absolutely tight about this one! Of course your task was not to identify if they were German or French. Well, in fact you didn't have to go to any of those countries. But those two sisters symbolized two sister cities of our Final Destination (Mende in France and Wunsiedel in Germany). As sister cities are sometimes called twin cities, a picture of twin sisters was used here.

Stage 5

A picture of an (Australian) plane and an advice not to travel by plane. This time there was no hidden meaning behind it. The town of Volterra does not have a proper airport, therefore thaveling by plane would be useless. After getting this clue right, it was clear that every city which is large enough to have its own airport, is not the right place to look for the prize in.

Stage 6

This one refers directly to the hint you got during Stage 3 and somehow exlpains what is the factor that is actually important in relation to the Race. This factor was labeled as "Education". The nice building you saw in the picture belongs to the Villanova University. The relation between Villanova and Volterra has already been explained in details.

Stage 7

You all know Anja Veterova and most probably her JESC song. If she was registered here, she'd most likely take part in the Race, as from her song we can find out that she loves to travel and visit different places. One of the places she mentioned was the city of Pisa. And if you followed her there, you'd really be amazingly close. Pisa and Volterra lie in the same province.

Stage 8

The second time in the entire Race when "Twilight" is mentioned but for the first time the real clue is devoted to it. The picture was a graphic interpretation of one of the moon phases called "New Moon". Interestingly "New Moon" was also the title of the second part of the "Twilight" saga. The one, in which the action actually takes place in Volterra.

In the "Twilight" series, Volterra was the place where the most dangerous and influential vampires were hiding that's why visiting it during nighttime may not be the best idea and it'd be safer to go there when the days are longer (vampires usually go hunting at night).

Stage 9

This was an imformation that at least one of you has the chance to finish it off during this Stage. In fact, even though most of you were really, really close, Dara was the only one able to reach Volterra withn the 300km limit. And she didn't make a mistake!

So, that'd be it when it comes to the clues .. more analysis coming soon! :)

Okay the Football clue was absolutely impossible.

And I thought:
Please Adi don't be that stupid to use a dialling code as clue.

And two stages later you were like: Oops, the clues were too easy. So I thought: Okay so that was indeed a dialling code :P

And the Anja Veterova one, Annika pointed out that she sang that she had seen the Eiffel Tower in Paris, but also the tower of Pisa. Meaning.. okay you must mean that according to Miss Veterova Paris stretches so far that it's between Pisa and Paris.. and what's quite in between: Saint-Tropez :P

Oh well the Germany France thing.. I interpreted that a bit cheesy: Saint-Tropez was occupied quite badly by the Germans during WWII :P

I wouldn't have been able to reach Volterra anyway if I'd had known it :P

And I explained the touristy thing already :P

Ok I am going to tell them. xD

1st clue - 19 - I just looked around Goteborg and saw the road numbers.. It brought me to Moss. It was written 19 all over it. xD

2nd clue - ICE - UK ELEPHANT FESTIVAL! xD There was an elephant in the ice. :P

3rd clue - (The footballer as I remember) - There was 'CAA' or 'CCA' on the footballers shirt and I searched for it and it meant.. The UK Civil Aviation Authority.. So.. UK again. xD

And then I was out. :P

See you're making sense as well actually :P You just ignored the fact that the first pic was clearly not in the UK :P But you could have explained that with: "UKers are notorious tourists." And then you had the link to the tourist thing :P

LOL xD

So a bit of advice for the next time Adi: You don't have to make your clues that easy, but you also shouldn't make them really really vague and mysterious :P Because that leads to multiple explanations that make just as much sense as yours. I wouldn't be able to do it myself, because I could have come up with something as vague as the explanation behind the Football clue myself :P but just keep it in mind :P
