Okay, I have started working on SAS 2, but would like a bit of feedback on what you didn't like about number one.
At the moment SAS 2 is a vertical scroller rather than the previous side scroller with a stationary player.
I will be having online highscores, but hopefully the game will be a little more challenging than SAS 1 !
All ideas are welcome !

Well the first one was kind of challenging to begin with. But to make SAS2 more challenging I would say, add new enemies like octagons, tetrahedrons and make them then have multiple attacks. As far as new ideas I would ask nebula because he's a good "ideas man". but here are couple.

Power-Ups (slow motion, kill everyone on your screen ect)
Maybe new weapons (although to keep it simplistic you cannot get additional ammo for it like SAS1)

Sorry I cant be of more help. I cant wait until this game comes out Im looking forward to it considering #1 Was Killer!

pick up ammo instead of limited ammo you can't restore
a shield power up, as well as ammo power up
lives which you have to pick up, power ups should slowly move towards you
explanation of controls (and how to get back after a game over)
a pentagon, doesn't matter where, you just need one
funky space music which drastically changes when you are facing a boss or on a new level
other power ups like shooting more than one bullet at a time and targeting missiles
different movements from different shapes
shapes which don't shoot they just hit you
shapes which form larger shapes and appear in waves
text which appears such as 'level 1' or 'level 2'
victory music
a weapon which is like a bomb
if you use your weapon too much in a row it powers down
when you defeat a boss there is a huge series of explosions
explosions consists of smaller shapes
going back in time, snowy can do it, I know how it works
the big bosses have large powerful beams which are easy to dodge
the big bosses fire out series of missiles which you have to move fast to dodge
there are turret shapes which fire out bullets like a sprinkler
the game never ends and you can pick up health
the levels get faster the longer you play
each type of shape has only one attack, so you know what they are going to do
there is a level where squares pour down and you have to go crazy and kill them all

thats all I have for now...

Hmm...
In my opinion, one thing you should do in a sequel, is make it different from the first one, not just an improved version of the first one...

Basically, never do what I'm doing with hovercarnage 2 :$

I think making the shapes come on in waves is a good idea (like the Smash Brothers coin launcher if anyone knows that) ... the shapes could create patterns or something... that actually is similar to what I'm thinking of. If you haven't seen it you could you tube (if you want)

You should probably add something that maes the game keep it's look, and overal feel, but adds something brand new into the gameplay.

I won't give any examples because I don't have any ideas.
