Spent my summer pushing trolleys around a car park for a bit more than minimum wage.
Booked a weekend in London for a convention in October as well, but haven't gotten away yet.

Magus, I hereby ban you from making jokes of any kind. If I even THINK you're trying to be funny, I nuke Houston.
Make another Hero Fad topic after I post this
you get suspended
As for this being an "annual event" or whatever, consider this an open warning for all Fire Emblem boards:
Next time I see any fad on this scale, I'll annihilate it to such an extent that you'll still be able to see the destruction when you close your eyes. I'll suspend every account involved, then scour their usermaps and suspend all related accounts. Then I'll hunt down any surviving accounts with posts on this board and suspend them if they're using the same IP as any of the suspended accounts. Then I'll check the usermaps of every suspended account once a day for a week and suspend any new accounts that show up.
Don't think I can, or don't think I will? Pfft. Try me.
I got into law school so now I can finally realize my dream to become Manfred von Karma. Otherwise I've mainly been experiencing bug bites and playing Dota.
that is a true dream. follow your dream and make sure you murder anyone named phoenix wright. also grats
Moved even further up north at the end of June, working a minimum wage job, hopefully starting school again in the fall. Spent a good chunk of time hiking/'mountain'-climbing, biking, at the beach, etc.

In Tokyo atm, heading to Kyoto in 3 hours to meet romantic interest for tanabata. One of my best years overall so far despite a messy start. Will give a better update when I have time and a keyboard.
Capsule hotels are pretty sweet imo

It didn't really do much of anything other than probably giving Izzy a lack of reason to care about the game, so it's not as huge a deal as my dick, but still kind of noteworthy.
My winter was filled with being cold and working at a nursery.
Oh and playing vidya and buying manga.

Does Australia have a magical extra hour around midnight I'm not aware of?
Yes. It is the Dark Hour in which everyone who hasn't faced their inner issues gets turned into a coffin for that hour while those who have the strength to face lifes hardships run around, beat up manifestations of bad emotions and stop people who get thrown into TVs from dying from fog-sickness
We don't like to talk about it, except to the Japanese, who had something similar happen in 2009 and 2011/2012.
I suppose I should've seen that coming.
Yes you should've.

Went back to look at this thread from last year, lots of changes since then. I put everything in spoilers because it's hella long but it's linear to read.
School stuff
School wise the 2013-2014 year was weird for me. First semester I had four classes, one of which was Mandarin to fulfill my degree language requirement. Dropped it in the first week, so I spend my first semester with a mix of three classes and an increased harvest season work load, iirc I did alright. Second semester I took four classes, but depression hit me pretty hard for the first three weeks of the semester which was really rough and basically didn't let me catch back up in math and physics (moreso math (grade split was like 90/90/50/7 %)) but strangely enough I excelled in my Anth classes and got nominated for the best undergraduate paper of the year award (did not win, also like half my paper was about King of the Hill). I also talked to the astronomy advisor a lot, and planned out the rest of my degree, and completing my Cultural Anthropology major with Astronomy minor would take me minimum another 3 years, very realistically 4 years.
Without astronomy, I can finish the C.Anth degree in just 10 classes + language requirement, which is much easier. I have 6 Anth classes and 4 electives remaining, essentially, and if I were to use all 4 electives on upper level philosophy (as well as a single additional lower level class) then I could complete a philosophy minor pretty easily, but I looked into it a bunch and minors are pretty useless in my field and philosophy minors are generally only useful for the knowledge you gain as opposed to the actual prestige anyway, so I'm taking my 4 electives and joined MENSA for replacement prestige (passed the entrance exam but don't have my card yet).
I also decided to do the American Sign Language (ASL) program at a local college to fulfill my university's language requirement, so we'll see how that goes. So far I like a lot of aspects about the language, such as generally gender neutral pronouns, although because it's based off of french sign language, which is based on outdated french, a bunch of the concepts are fairly outdated. For example, the most common sign for "boy" is adjusting the brim of a hat, while the most common sign for "girl" is tying a bonnet. More problematically, most female-oriented signs are done by the chin, and most male oriented signs are done on the forehead. For example, mother and father are the same sign in different areas. This is both because men are above women, and because men use their brains while women use their mouths. The most common sign for "gay" is the letter G (index finger extended, others like a fist) but inverted and placed near the mouth so that it looks like you're sucking a dick (also because gay people are closer to women than men), and the most common sign for "lesbian" is the letter L inverted into a V and placed near the mouth so it looks like you're eating someone out. It's problematic in a lot of ways (take a guess what body part you adjust for the "asian"/"chinese" sign) but I'm prepared to talk / call out my instructors on things if I have to (see later on).
So my schedule for next year looks like this:
Semester 1
Anthropology 428 - Medicine and Society Anthropology 495 - Advanced topics in anthropology: Colonialism Gender Race Sexuality and Social Justice 300 - Intersectional Approached to Gender Relations American Sign Language 1
Semester 2
Anthropology 300 - Contemporary Anthropological Theory Anthropology 315 - Japanese Culture and Society Gender Race Sexuality and Social Justice 305 - Issues in Community and International Organizing American Sign Language 1
Love stuff
In my first semester at UBC (2012-2013) I had a pretty boring / basic lower level anth class, and I had a Paraguayan friend who was an exchange student from Japan. Me, her, a friend of hers and a friend of mine all studied for the final exam together but it wasn't a whole lot. Paraguayan friend transferred back to Japan at the end of the year, and my other friend transferred back to Indonesia. This year around October I ran into my Paraguayan friend's friend, who was a Japanese exchange student from Japan, and who is now also the main character and will just be called "my friend" from this point on, and it came up in conversation that I grow kabocha (Japanese word for pumpkin, although it's actually a "buttercup squash" in English) on my farm, which my friend hadn't eaten in over a year since coming to Canada, so we agreed to hang out and cook some.
We did with two other friends and also a few other events that my friend organized. My friend said Canadian/American pumpkin pie has no flavour, but in Japan what they do is more like a kabocha flan. Texture is like halfway between a quiche and custard. Absolutely delicious. Also we made squash pasta and some other stuff. I also went to my first protest-like event, which was UBC's Take Back The Night march, with my friend and another one of the friends who we cooked squash with (and who was also in the mediocre anth class but I didn't know her at the time). It was cool at first but it ended with a major split when a transwoman called out the campus branch of Rape Relief (major supporter of the event) for it's transphobic exclusionary practices, which is a totally legit concern but semi-tangential to the point of the march (it's a bit like a (black) vegetarian calling out a meat shop as a sponsor for a (black) community civil rights event). People split up but the rest of it was alright.
Ended up running into that friend a few more times throughout the year around campus and we made plans to hang out a few times. One time was the UBC Racialized Students Resistance conference this year, of which my friend was one of the major co-ordinators, and I volunteered for it (first time volunteering for something - I in general have a moral problem with volunteer work but it's about as dumb as it sounds), which was really cool and I met a lot of great people and networking and ideas etc. After that there was like a personal graduation ceremony put on by one of the professors who was exceptionally close with her students and who was also one of the major co-ordinators of the event and I volunteered to stay and help with that as well. My friend and me got a lot closer after that and hung out for like everyday for weeks into a row.
Then that person moved back to Japan. My biggest fear is friends moving away, and because I knew what I was getting into here I was having 1-2+ pretty severe anxiety attacks per day. Wasn't feeling great but I was really really happy during the time we hung out so it didn't really matter to me. Obviously like 10/10 in love and pretty crushed at moving. Feelings reciprocated, which is less comforting of a knowledge than you may anticipate it would have been in such a situation.
Continued hanging out with that friend's friends that I was introduced to, particularly the professor-friend who I've not yet taken a class with but who is the instructor for my GRSJ305 class in the upcoming second semester. Like 10 days ago my dad said I should go travelling a bit, since my little brother had gone travelling a lot this summer and I only have a brief timing before the harvest season starts. 9 Days ago professor friend said I should go to Japan. 7 days ago I booked a flight and 5 days ago I got on a plane. Very short term planning obviously which has been a little problematic but not too bad. You can probably guess my major incentive for going to Japan and who's house I'm staying at atm.
Japan stuff
Left on the 5th, arrived on the 6th. Spent first night in Tokyo in a capsule hotel, which was pretty neat. I get terribly terribly motion sick from planes, so my flight was basically 11 hours of my sitting forward in my seat (to avoid spinal vibrations from the chair) looking straight at the roof (to avoid vision of the other passengers in-flight entertainment screens) and with my eyes open the whole time (to avoid heightening other senses). I fasted for like the five days beforehand and managed to get onboard with no food in my stomach or digestive system, so I didn't vomit but I did have a little bile diarrhea which is painful as hell.
Survived the plane, survived showering with other Japanese people (jealous of the younger guy's lack of hair, but biggest dick in the pool is alright too). Basically slept from 5pm when I arrived until midnight, and then spent a lot of it planning stuff and exploring the area around my hotel (I walked up to Akihabara but nothing was open).
Showed up at Kyoto station on the morning of the 7th and met up with a friend of mine from high school (exchange student) and hung out with him all day, which included dropping my bags off at my friend's house and a kind of rushed 3-month-waiting-greeting that wasn't as much as I envisioned but nbd. Ended up meeting some of my friend's friends in Kyoto later on, as the three of them are working on the Kansai Queer Film Festival in September together. One of them is a farmer, and his English&Japanese&Science/Latin vocabulary for plant names is actually incredible.
The three of them left for Osaka yesterday (the 8th) after we all hung out, and they come back tomorrow (the 10th) late in the evening. Today I had lunch for dinner with my Paraguayan friend from the first part of the story.
Obviously this is a pretty condense / not Japan focused telling of my Japan adventure so far, maybe I'll say more later when I'm home and have time.
I'm going to sleep now so the rest will have to wait for later. Notably I settled some gender SHiiiiiiiiiiiT and am interested in Spitty's crossplay.
