It's probably not expected, but I've actually bee pretty involved with the local band scene and stuff the past few weeks. I've been around my friends bands and been setting up and recording for shows, etc. Well, it's kind of contagious. So I'm starting up guitar again after a year hiatus, and I need some help. I never kept with it because I never had a direction to go with it; sure, I could learn a few songs, or I could spend my days being bored trying to memorize chords, which seems to have no real value unless I like playing country. I know that statement is blatantly wrong, but that's what it feels like when I'm trying to learn them. So is there any good general direction I should go or anything? Or a website that has progressive lessons, or something? I have no idea who actually plays guitar here, so I guess I'm basically asking Squid and Fers. |

What I used to do is basically look up the chords / tabs of a song I like on the internets, and learn it from there, or if I couldn't get it from those, look up a tutorial on youtube. You kinda get the hang of the chords over time when you pay attention. |

And what kept you motivated to keep doing better? also, what equipment would I need to get a bass sound out of my guitar? I've realized that my life is 199% like Scott Pilgrim right now, and I match the part of 5, the vegan bass player. So I need to learn bass (and am too poor to buy a bass). |

Since most of my friends played guitar as well, I just kept learning songs, eventually getting to the ones that are harder to play, and I just sort of kept at it, I guess. No idea on the bass thing, maybe Squidjack can help you out with that. |

I'm surprised the grapist hasn't seen this topic yet. I am actually intimidated by the fact all my friends can already play. Several of my friends have been on Warped Tour, for Christ's sake. I just keep thinking, if they're already so good, I probably shouldn't even bother, cause no one is gonna be impressed by my ability. I can't help myself, I like positive reinforcement. |

Lemme know when you figure this one out. I can never keep with it when I try to pick guitar up again. Or basically any of the instruments I've wanted to get better at that I didn't have formal lessons for. I just completely lose motivation after a few weeks. |

My best understanding of what passion would be, if it were to exist, is "people who are naturally good at something tend to do that thing more often, because they're already experiencing the reward, whereas people who don't start out naturally capable don't try very hard, because they get no reward". Which is exactly what I'm experiencing. I'm not a natural at guitar, but I want to learn it because I enjoy it anyway. But I can't seem to, because I'm not naturally able, so it just seems like an exercise in making me feel like shit and not be good at it. But I can tend to ignore that feeling if there is a decidedly good and fairly clear path that will enable me to progress and gradually get better. Which is why I need that. |

main thing is sticking with it, really, learn stuff that's outside your ability but not too far outside or just songs you like; i'm not sure there's such a thing as "talent", more like having intuition as to good learning practices if you can't get it right, break it down into something you can that's as succinct as i can be |

Well thank you, I shall begin trying to break down difficult sections to learn part by part for songs. Not that I'm especially good at major transitions or rapid finger movements, and doubt I ever will be. What are your thoughts on learning to read staffs for guitar? I know how to, but not for guitar. I have to use tabs for guitar. Do understanding what notes are being played and where actually make chords make more sense? Because to me, the entire formation and existence of chords looks like it's completely arbitrarily defined and has no rhyme or reason, which really confuses me. |

look up will leavitt's "a modern method for guitar" i'm p. sure you can find pdfs of it online fairly easily, it's pretty helpful for getting started on that! it might not be the most useful thing to know, but i like knowing it because it gives me another way to feel smugly superior to others (also i don't feel like dedicating the time on technique or whatever to becoming a passable metal guitarist); basically a lot are lazy chainsaws who went "oh hendrix never bothered learning theory so i don't need to!" while ignoring what hendrix did that made him hendrix |

Well, as I said, I never actually successfully learned guitar, but just from what I know of music theory, I would imagine having good muscle memory for chords would just make you a more efficient player, because those are the finger formations that are going to come up a lot even in melodies. Because, you know. Chords are notes that go well together, so you play them together a lot. If you can recognize that you're playing the notes from a familiar chord in a melody, then you automatically know an efficient finger placement to get them in quick succession, instead of going "Okay, now I need to play this note. Now move over here for this one..." and so on. Maybe I'm just being a pianist, though. Edited by SketchyAtBest, Jun 12 2012, 08:30:47 PM.

You have both been informative! I am downloading that book series now. I'll save it right next to my book on Javascript, which I have yet to use even though I want to. And Ryli you just explained chords and why I want to know them so much better than anyone ever has before. Ily. |
