I just finished the book (my job gives me a lot of time to read). It was pretty chainsawing awesome. Like Hunger Games on venom. I'm in the process of downloading the movie. I hope it is equally awesome. |

Okay, think of what little patience I have as, oh, I don't know, your virginity. You always thought it would be there, until that night Junior Year when you were feeling a little down about yourself and your pal Kevin, who just wanted to be friends, well, he dropped by and he brought a copy of About Last Night and a four-pack of Bartels & James and woo hoo hoo, it was gone forever - just like my patience is now. ~ Dr. Perry Cox Who the hell... put bouillon cubes in the shower head!?! Huh? Hm, did you do it? Hm? Did you? If it happens again, I will wait in my S.U.V., blast me some speed-metal -- 5.1 surround sound, heavy on the bass -- and someone... will be getting... mowed... down. ~ Dr. Hooch | |

The movie is good. I haven't read the book and some fans of that say the movie's not as good, but it's a good movie on its own right. The acting is a little cheesy but what do you expect from young actors in a Japanese film. Some people say that the real meaning of the film can easily be lost on foreign viewers who don't have much familiarity with modern Japanese society, and I can think of a few scenes that might seem a little weird if you're unfamiliar with certain aspects of daily life. In spite of the violence, it's all a satire on modern Japanese society. Still, it's entertaining regardless I think. A few points about Japan that are covered in the movie: -Teachers are basically not allowed to discipline students in schools. This has led to what some perceive as kids going wild in schools or just not caring anymore. -The older generation seems to fear the younger generation and many believe they "have no culture" or are out of control. -There are early morning radio stretching/exercise programs that are supposed to promote harmony. -And you may be familiar with this but the "cutesiness" of Japanese popular culture. Everything I've read compares them kind of like this: Hunger Games was made by parents to tell the story of Battle Royale in order to save them from seeing the actual deaths and gore of the way something like this would really be. |

Okay, I finished the movie. It is basically a spark notes version of the book. In the book nearly every single student receives a backstory and characterzation, and all but like 5 deaths are portrayed in the book. The movie skips over almost all the characterization and glances past a lot of the deaths. If you read the book the movie will probably disappoint you because it just feels like a highlight reel. But it was still fun. |

To be fair, I don't think it would have been feasible to flesh out all the characters in a single 90-120 minute movie. |

Obviously. I completely understand why they cut a lot of stuff. But even knowing that it didn't make you miss it any less. Oh and they needed more Bruce Springsteen. A lot more Springsteen. |

I haven't read the book, but the movie is hilarious. The sequel isn't quite as funny, mostly due to the lack of weaponized pot lids. |

It relates more accurately to "let's go into the absolute brutal details of (the effects of) counterculturism in an (arguably) oppressive dystopian society, where LOTS of people die and the overall sentiment makes you kinda feel bad, representing values and concepts primarily for adults" to "the story about a significant figure and figurehead in an uprising move to free subjugated peoples from an unnecessarily cruel ruler, while showing the honesty of emotions, character development, and introducing kids to an accurate and honest portrayal of the dangers of government control and the horror of death (and too much makeup). |

But the only character with substantial character development is Katpiss, and even then she is wooden and boring as chainsaw. The book itself isn't all that well-written either. |

They're much better written that most things I've read, short of giants like Douglas Adams and Orson Scott Card. Certainly higher calibur than other writers with far more experience. And it isn't character development by adult standards, it's character development by teen standards. They are actually individual people who are emotionally ambiguous as situations get complicated, and most importantly, relationships are only confusing because everyone keeps chainsawing dying, not because they want drama. That's an important lesson. Also the fact Katniss isn't a Mary Sue, thank chainsawing god. She's actually a valuable asset both before and after she becomes the figurehead for revolution. Sure, they don't go to the dark and gritty reality of deeply thought out moral and ethical stances on the abstract concepts of the world like an adult novel would be expected to, but the characters probably haven't developed a lot of those. And, y'know, there's a whole part where they're basically constantly in a state of trying to not get murdered. |

I almost feel like I'm watching one of my female friends try and defend Bella's characterization and change in twilight. |

Bella only went from "what, I'm special?" to "What, I'm pregnant?" and that was about it. To each their own, of course, but it seems that The Hunger Games series is exceptional for a young adult series. It addresses the issues they most identify with in ways that are not only tolerable and sane, but much more realistic than other popular series (See: Twilight). The characters grow in independence and confidence, and there is a strong tone of self-reliance and working toward mutual goals/goals of the good, and I can't think of teaching teenagers that to ever be a bad thing. It's not necessarily up to the existential, mature levels of Daywatch, Battle Royale, or Fight Club, obviously, but it's not supposed to be. It's supposed to be mature for a young adult age, not mature for a mature age. You don't have to like it, obviously, though I certainly do. But you should appreciate that it does a lot more for trying to keep teens grounded and encourage growth than plenty of other teen series. |

For the record, I have no real problem with Hunger Games. It is a relatively fun, very simple read. Certainly better than shit like Twilight. It didn't engage me enough to read anymore than the first book, but I'm also not the audience it's aiming for. |
