I started listening to his stuff some time last year. Took a while to work my way from the late sixties through the early 90'ies, but I think I've managed by now. Spotify having all the albums helps a lot, too. Much of the music is difficult. I can't say there are many songs of his I liked the first time I head them, and some songs, like Aladdin Sane, took probably a dozen of listenings to truly appreciate (The piano solo in particular). Favourite albums are basically most of his early 70'ies stuff - The Man Who Sold The World, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane. Let's Dance is a great album as well. Much of what I appreciate about him is the combination of experimental and conventional music, combined with lyrics that often have significant intellectual depth, as well as the forceful stories he tells. I have not actually listened much to the stuff he's been making the last decade and a half or so. Neoclassicism isn't really my thing. He's one of those musicians who's difficult to talk about simply because of the copious scope of his music, but yeah. Presumably at least a few other people here have listened to him, to some extent. |

Bisexual, yes. I'm not sure about how true that actually is, though, because it was also part of his glam rock image. At least one song, Velvet Goldmine, is about making out with a man, though. There's a good chance it's about as true as him being a fascist. |

Right now, these two songs are my favourites: Saviour Machine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-AMec7yr7c Aladdin Sane: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2y9inP4CqE More in general... Well, it's difficult to pick out a few songs, but I'll try. China Girl: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrERLeFseDA Ziggy Stardust: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXq5VvYAI1Q Starman: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5iOiLX5ppA Song for Bob Dylan: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiK7HcUx_BY Oh! you pretty things: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgQHZjAafo4 My Bowie playlist is 10 hours long, so yeah, this is just a thin slice. But some of my favourites. Note that I didn't like any of the above songs in particular the first time I heard them, but came to appreciate them more and more. |

well in the 80's it was pretty fly to be bi when a person is a musician for as long as bowie is/was - you get to see them evolve and change, I personally really like his work around the late 70 and early-mid 80s because you can clearly see him change over that course of time. great stuff overall. one of my favourite artists for sure. |

The Bi thing started around his Ziggy Stardust era, I think. The most notable change, starting with Low, I think, is that lyrics become less and less important in his songs. I think this is a loss in one way. But some forms of music are simply better with a smaller focus on the lyrics. I guess the good thing about Bowie is that he HAS evolved, and not stagnated, like many others have. |

David Bowie is the leader of the Guild of Calamitous Intent, of course he is awesome. |

Okay, think of what little patience I have as, oh, I don't know, your virginity. You always thought it would be there, until that night Junior Year when you were feeling a little down about yourself and your pal Kevin, who just wanted to be friends, well, he dropped by and he brought a copy of About Last Night and a four-pack of Bartels & James and woo hoo hoo, it was gone forever - just like my patience is now. ~ Dr. Perry Cox Who the hell... put bouillon cubes in the shower head!?! Huh? Hm, did you do it? Hm? Did you? If it happens again, I will wait in my S.U.V., blast me some speed-metal -- 5.1 surround sound, heavy on the bass -- and someone... will be getting... mowed... down. ~ Dr. Hooch | |

"The mysterious entity who runs the Guild of Calamitous Intent. He communicates principally by use of tele-screens which distort his face and voice. Bowie is a shapeshifter, and has been shown capable of taking the form of specific human beings, as well as animals and inanimate objects." rofl |
