Still is a fact that non-benders have nothing on benders if the bender wants to do something to them. This chi blocking thing should get more widespread, evens the playing field. |

What confuses me perpetually about this world, is why the benders don't just simply outbreed nonbenders, so almost everyone is a bender by now. I mean, if your choice is between having a kid that can bend an element and a kid that can't, wouldn't you choose the bending? |

Maybe it's a recessive gene? Or maybe benders take all the dangerous jobs (like, say, soldier), and so get killed off younger and more frequently? Or maybe for those reasons, bender genes aren't actually selected for? |

Yeah Bending is really chainsawing wonky. Two benders can give birth to a non-bender. Two non-benders can give birth to a bender. |

Okay, think of what little patience I have as, oh, I don't know, your virginity. You always thought it would be there, until that night Junior Year when you were feeling a little down about yourself and your pal Kevin, who just wanted to be friends, well, he dropped by and he brought a copy of About Last Night and a four-pack of Bartels & James and woo hoo hoo, it was gone forever - just like my patience is now. ~ Dr. Perry Cox Who the hell... put bouillon cubes in the shower head!?! Huh? Hm, did you do it? Hm? Did you? I'm actually having trouble thinking of examples of either of those... Most cases I can think of were either two benders having bender kids, or a bender and a non-bender having either one. I can't think of any cases saying specifically that neither parent was a bender. |

It works out pretty easily if you have at least two genes controlling it. Not unlike how blue-eyed people can have brown-eyed babies and brown-eyed people can have blue-eyed babies. For example, the loci x and y could have a/A and b/B as their variations. You need at least one A and one B to be a bender. So two parents could be aAbB and AaBb (benders) and give birth to a aabb child (nonbender). Conversely, two parents could be Aabb and aaBb (non-benders) and give birth to an AaBb child (bender) Edited by Breadmaster Tubba, May 1 2012, 12:35:18 PM.

Katara and presumably Toph are both examples of non-bending couples giving birth to bender. Spoiler: click to toggle

Wasn't Katara's mother a bender, though? And I figured Toph's dad could be or could not be, it never really said. |

Katara was special since she was the only bender in the Southern Water tribe. Her mom just said she was a bender so that the Fire Nation troops would kill her instead of Katara. Toph's parents showed no signs of being able to bend, but since their is no evidence either way I said presumably. I suppose one of them could be a really shitty bender. |

After watching the most recent episode I am very happy to see that Toph passed on all of her badassery to her daughter. |

I like these shows for letting experienced, skilled characters actually be good at things. |
