wouldnt that make them MORE likely to pick you? otherwise their ideal jury would be people who are easily swayed by emotions, which wouldnt lead to just verdicts |

minor nitpick: When you said "instant challenge for cause," I think you mean "instant peremptory challenge." A challenge for cause is essentially a claim that a prospective juror is unable to reach a fair and unbiased decision. This must be agreed upon by the judge, who evaluates what the juror has said so far to determine if he or she is too biased to serve as a juror. You would be a very unlikely candidate for a challenge for cause, because the judge would likely deem you capable of delivering a fair decision. The second type of challenge is a peremptory challenge. Each side has a limited number of these challenges, but they can be used to eliminate a juror from the juror pool for any reason whatsoever. The side using the peremptory challenge doesn't even have to explain why they're using one. Drunk driving case, prospective juror is a single mom whose son was killed at a young age? Peremptory challenge. Seatbelt ticket case, prospective juror is a hardcore libertarian? Peremptory challenge. Defendant is a young black kid, prospective juror is an 80 year old white guy? Peremptory challenge. Because prosecutors are indeed often looking for "easily manipulated idiots," the prosecution would almost certainly use a peremptory challenge on you. CB can I have a job at your school now please than you edit: I just realized I basically made this exact same rant in this very topic back on page 2 in 2010. Coulda saved myself some time oh well Edited by Frog, Feb 2 2014, 04:13:28 PM.

"They" in this case leads to the prosecution/defense (depending on the situation) The judges definitely want people who won't be swayed by emotions and will deliver just verdicts, but one (or both) of the two sides generally does their best to get these kinds of people dismissed during jury selection. |

Oh, they make most of the choices. The Judge is really only there to try and reduce frivolous challenges. |

Naturally I forgot to call last night when I was supposed to I called now and they automated message said "Jurors with numbers in this range (I am in the range) show up tomorrow at 830" Hopefully that means they weren't expecting me today. No way I'll be there at 830 though. <_> |

Well, I went in to court and asked them to postpone me because I am taking the GRE in two weeks, then the GRE chemistry in six weeks. They just gave me a new day in July. I didn't even get to tell them why, I just said I needed a different date and they said "uhh let me check july good? yeah ok bye go home" |

I went to jury duty once for a rape trial. It lasted about a week. 80% of my time was spent sitting down just waiting with the other jurors. In the jury room. In the lobby. Or somewhere. At first, I was excited to see a trial in person for the first time, but waiting all the time for what seemed like forever everyday just really killed it for myself and my fellow jurors. |
