Okay, think of what little patience I have as, oh, I don't know, your virginity. You always thought it would be there, until that night Junior Year when you were feeling a little down about yourself and your pal Kevin, who just wanted to be friends, well, he dropped by and he brought a copy of About Last Night and a four-pack of Bartels & James and woo hoo hoo, it was gone forever - just like my patience is now. ~ Dr. Perry Cox Who the hell... put bouillon cubes in the shower head!?! Huh? Hm, did you do it? Hm? Did you? If it happens again, I will wait in my S.U.V., blast me some speed-metal -- 5.1 surround sound, heavy on the bass -- and someone... will be getting... mowed... down. ~ Dr. Hooch | |

i had jury duty december 23rd but i got out of it because i had what they referred to as a "scheduling hardship" - i had vacation planned for the days the trial would have started. spent 1 hour 15 minutes total and then i had the rest of the day off. i didnt mind. it was a murder case btw the dude totally did it Edited by icecreamman, Feb 1 2014, 03:04:44 PM.

I told my dad about this, and he (a lawyer) was very amused, because he is doing voir dire in the same court on the same day. I may have a very good excuse to get excused. (it's a big court though so maybe not... the judge will probably recognize my name though, my dad works there a lot) |

I'm pretty sure that if you wanted to, you could get out of this. Maybe not necessarily by being dismissed by the judge (in fact, saying stupid things in an attempt to get dismissed by the judge is something that a. judges see all the time b. they hate c. would make your dad look bad. Just mention who your dad is, what he does, and say that you're definitely willing to stay in the jury pool and will judge fairly. At this point, he might or might not keep you in. If he keeps you in, you might get called back a different day (or maybe they'll do it the same day, I dunno where you live or how your court system does things...pretty sure it will be a different ay though) THIS is where you try to get off. If your dad really is a lawyer, I almost guarantee you that whoever the prosecutor is is gonna get scared SHiiiiiiiiiiiTless and say 'Chainsaw this, we cannot have this guy on the jury.' And they'll use a preemptory challenge to get rid of you because they want jurors who will act on emotion rather than following procedure. Or, failing that, it will be the other way around: the prosecution will want you to take charge and be the one to say 'he probably did it but we have to acquit because that's the rule' and the defense will want you out of there specifically so you don't do this. Someone with as much knowledge of the legal system as you (and before you claim not to know much, even knowing what 'voire dire' is puts you in the top 5% instantly) is a gigantic wild card and one side or the other is going to want you out of there for sure. I think it will be really easy to get off (if that is your goal) at that stage of the game if you're honest with the prosecution and defense and let them know how much you know. |

My dad told me to make the following (true) statement if I really want to get off: "I just finished my degree in mathematics, which has effectively trained me to not be let to jump to conclusions by emotional arguments and base my decisions only on logic and facts." Instant challenge for cause. |

Yes. I forget how much it was exactly. Maybe $30? I've actually been called for jury duty again since then and wanted to get picked for that one too, but the guy did a plea bargain at the last minute or something during jury selection. Got paid like $6 for showing up IIRC. |

The Juror fee in NY is 40/day. I'm not sure if that's just for showing up, or only if you actually get selected, or whatever. |
