Any movie that shows death by being crushed enough to be sucked out of a hole in a spacecraft into hard vacuum is a good movie. But there's a shit ton of deaths to be had in it, especially when Sinestro all but destroys the Corps primary power battery on Oa, leaving all the Lanterns who were in space to die. |

Eh, it was alright. I thought it was rushed and found the fights far to DBZish for my liking. Also the VA's were largely miss-cast, Sinestro was okay though. That said if you liked the movie I suggest you look into some of the more modern Green Lantern comics (from Green Lantern: Rebirth on) as they are very good. |

Okay, think of what little patience I have as, oh, I don't know, your virginity. You always thought it would be there, until that night Junior Year when you were feeling a little down about yourself and your pal Kevin, who just wanted to be friends, well, he dropped by and he brought a copy of About Last Night and a four-pack of Bartels & James and woo hoo hoo, it was gone forever - just like my patience is now. ~ Dr. Perry Cox Who the hell... put bouillon cubes in the shower head!?! If it happens again, I will wait in my S.U.V., blast me some speed-metal -- 5.1 surround sound, heavy on the bass -- and someone... will be getting... mowed... down. ~ Dr. Hooch | |

Alan Scott is pretty unrelated to the Green Lantern Corps' GLs. He is also way more awesome (or at least he was pre-Nu52, I haven't read enough of the new Alan Scott yet). That being said, I'm not all that happy with this particular change in the character. Alan Scott had an established character, was married to a former super-villainess, and fathered two childeren. This is just change for the sake of publicity. I have no problem with gay characters, but to make an established character gay just to say "Look, one of our big heroes is gay", is just stupid. Instead they should just work on promoting their current gay characters (including Alan Scott's son Obsidian). Most of which are largely ignored right now. |

I see, I didn't know there was a difference. But I agree about the publicity thing... |

I have pretty much the same opinion as Raptor too, although I was less aware of Alan Scott because I wasn't much of a JSA guy. Only vaguely knew him as Obsidian and Jade's dad and not-corps GL. |

there's non-core GLs? That's allowed? TBH I think almost all of the DC universe is pretty gay, so I don't know much at all about it. I just never heard about that sort of thing before. |

He was the original Golden Age (1940's and 50's) Green Lantern. At the time there was no Green Lantern corp. It was just a guy who found a magic lantern and forged a ring out of it that allowed him to make giant flaming constructs. He and many other Golden Age character fell out of favor with the popularity of war comics during WWII. In the Silver Age of comics (1960's-80's) DC basically revamped some of their old Golden Age heroes. The new Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, was a space cop with a power ring. Eventually DC brought the characters all together. The same thing happened to characters like the Flash, Atom, and other characters. |

It frightens me that American Comics are put into Ages. And still, I'm actually interested in getting into comics. I think I just notice DC having random reboots and multiple series using the same character, but separate timelines, a lot, and that's why I don't like DC. I'm sure Marvel does that plenty, too. It just bothers me. |

Seems to me you should probably just find a character/comic that you think seems interesting/cool/whatever or ask Raptor/someone else for same, get recommended a good starting place for one of said character's/comic's better runs, and just start reading while not worrying about all that other stuff. Surely that's reasonably possible. Besides, even if wading through all that stuff appeals to you, you'd probably never have a chance at getting all of the alternate universes/timelines/reboots/retcons/70-year-long backstories or whatever the chainsaw else straight without actually starting to read the comics - even if you could process all that information straight up, you'd lack the context to properly understand it and have no reason to care about it yet. It also might spoil some things that needn't necessarily be spoiled if you ever read through some of the older stuff for that character/comic. |

I might do that. I work with Kids Need to Read, a nonprofit organization that tries to further exactly what it sounds like, and they end up having booths at comic book shop events a lot. I have to assume it's less because comic book people are literate or care about kids, and more that they desperately need to hook kids on comics early so that they can tap into that wonderful economy of "daddy, I neeeed this!". |
