They're splicing a bunch of old anime series into movies, dubbing them, and releasing them on VHS.

At the worst, these should be good for a few laughs at the likely terrible dubs.

Whose idea was it to splice these series rather than just release them uncut? Why does Toei Animation suck so horribly at producing decent products for the US market?

That idea might not have been financially viable, perhaps? I doubt series that are several decades old with only subs would sell well in the U.S, particularly since several if not all of these series are already streamed online legally for free. This might also be a way of cutting costs.

Yeah, these will probably be terrible, but they might at least be amusingly terrible.

I don't see how this will be profitable. Maybe 20 years ago it would have been, but all of these series are so old and so obscure in the US that by editing them down and only including a dub track that in all likelihood will be terrible, they're limiting their market by even more than they would be if they had just produced an extremely limited sub-only DVD release of some kind.

If they air it on TV then it might be profitable, but what kind of channel and timeslot is good for an anime from the 70s or 80s? Lupin III failed miserably.

Yeah, that could be true too.

Lupin III didn't do well? That's a shame, I enjoyed it when it was on AS and back when I watched AS.

Yes, Lupin failed pretty hard. They only ran like... what, 20 episodes at the most on AS?

Though it was prolly more like 13, and they skipped the NAZI EPISODE, because, well, they were asked to. Because I guess NAZI EPISODES only do well in Japan.

Not just US market...*recalls the horrible, almost plotless anime adaptation of Ranma 1/2*

Weird, they aired it in Italy. And they're rather censor-happy around here.

But when the Ranma 1/2 anime was good, it was awesome, and let's be honest: the manga itself became pretty much plotless by volume 15 or so. I have nothing against Toei's anime productions for the most part personally, but it seems maybe about 50% of the time they try to release something in the US it ends up getting butchered (One Piece) or with a horrible quality release (Air Master).

Well, others are more qualified than me to answer that, but I hear that unlike Naruto and Bleach it doesn't suddenly become substantially worse, and it supposedly gets better after the first few arcs. Whether you like it or if it is any good in the first place is another question, but if you start off enjoying the series my understanding is that you probably will not be disappointed in continuing to watch it.

(For the record, I watched butchered One Piece for a bit when it was on CN and didn't particularly like it, so I stopped.)
