I've downloaded a few of their hits and I'm in love with trains. I'll probably buy In Absentia once I can find it. Do you have a suggestion for a different album though? I like classic prog like Yes and Rush but I'm not much into most of the newer prog-metal stuff I'm more of a late 80s to early 90s alt-rock fan; what is the best Porcupine Tree album for me? |

Trains is pretty cool, but on the whole, I think that Deadwing's a better album than In Absentia (IA has a few GREAT songs like Prodigal, Heartattack in a Layby, Trains, The Sound of Muzak, and Collapse the Light into Earth, but there's also a lot of ones that I can't get into at all), but it's more metal, though IA certainly is fairly metal at points. For something more alt-rock-ish, I'd say to get Stupid Dream or maybe even Lightbulb Sun. Here's a few of the better tracks off of each of those if you want to Youtube them or whatever. Deadwing: Arriving Somewhere But Not Here, Deadwing, The Start of Something Beautiful, Lazarus In Absentia: Blackest Eyes, Trains, The Sound of Muzak, Prodigal, Heartattack in a Layby Lightbulb Sun: Lightbulb Sun, Four Chords That Made a Million, Shesmovedon (better version is on Deadwing, but still a badass song) Stupid Dream: Even Less, Piano Lessons, Stop Swimming, A Smart Kid Also, if you also like Pink Floyd, you really should check out The Sky Moves Sideways. Also, Dark Matter, while not from any of those albums I listed (not too big on Signify, but maybe I just need to give it a few more listens), is a great song and worth checking out. |

I actually can't stand Pink Floyd, but thanks for all of the suggestions. I'll download 'em tonight and decide on an album to pick up from there. |

Lightbulb Sun is fantastic but I am enjoying Deadwing more than I thought I would. Open Car is my fave track currently. |

I haven't been able to get into LBS as much as their other albums, actually. And yeah, Deadwing's pretty great. Is it just me or does the riff in-between the verses of Open Car sound somewhat like Soundgarden? |

I just popped in Badmotorfinger to compare. It does sound Soundgarden-ish but I don't think it's all that exclusive of a sound. But maybe that's why Open Car stood out to me, it subconciously reminded me of Soundgarden. |

Every time I listen to a Porcupine Tree song written by Steven Wilson, I detach my interpersonal radar from my surroundings and dispel myself of all my soul's thoughts. I make accommodations, but there is no need to, because Steven is such an incredible songwriter that he perforates your mind's defenses without you needing to. Every song of his goes straight to my soul and evokes every iota of imagination that I possess. Most songwriters would struggle to do such things even were there songs about personal experiences, but Steven transcends that. He writes about the world that he and I share and observe, the society that he has been disgusted by for far longer than I, and desensitization which is to an extent that I hope I will never experience. Through this and his familiarity which can occasionally even evolve into discussion of the inner workings of the mind, he expends his soul into his music, and in this way he grapples the very depths of my mind and my soul to a degree that almost moves me to tears. |
