So since I have no girlfriend now, about 20 to 25 hours are freed up for me each week. Well, except for the fact that I still talk to her just as much. Point is, I can blow her off and get away with it, and thus have more free time now.

So, i want to get back into drawing. i dabbled a little. I'm good enough to take a few minutes and create something decent now. I can't manage to put in good details or good shading or anything, but I can get the point across well with anything I want to draw. Except tetrapods. Fuckin' four leggers.

So what'd you recommend me to do to start up again? I have no particular direction I want to go with what I draw, I just want to eventually be able to draw anything, many years down the road. I have charcoal pencils and standard school supplies available, along with a ruler and a wacom tablet.

Well, I dunno. I think you said you were taking an art class before, so you probably have learned somewhat how to draw directly what you see. For me, I mostly only ever draw cityscapes and cartoon/animu people, so what I work on is perspective, anatomy/natural-looking poses, and clothing folds. I'm guessing you may have covered perspective a little in your art class.

This is a great site for practicing drawing real anatomy and realistic poses

An important thing to keep in mind when drawing people, especially cartoon people, is the line of action

For clothing folds it's difficult to explain. I guess look at real life, and look at what artists do, and remember to keep in mind that it's the flack areas that have visible folds.

Oh, and if you want, I wouldn't offering my opinions on drawings you do. Having someone else point out what they think can be a huge help.

Actually, the art class ended up being "intro to art". It was more like a teenage "express yourself!" class than anything. I never learned anything directly about drawing. I learned a little how to do one-point perspective, and that was it.

I would like to start by drawing buildings and stuff though, I think. Get decent buildings down and then move on to trees and other stuff that truly baffles me in perspective. How would I do that? Or for that matter, draw directly what I see?

To draw what you see, the important part is two things:
1. DRAW LIGHTLY. Only start defining a shape when everything is in proportion to one another. It's possible to do a photorealistic drawing without erasing at all, if you start light enough.
2. Cast aside any preconceptions you have about how an item should look, and focus on how it DOES look. I think this is is the single thing we spent the most time on in my art class in high school (mine wasn't too different from yours I think, but I did get up to Art 2 at least). You can practice this by taking a photograph or linework or some such, putting it on some kind of large graph, putting it upside down, then covering most of it so when you draw you don't know what it is you're actually drawing.

Drawing anything else you see comes with that. Buildings can look however you want; you may want to look up 2 and 3 point perspective online if you want some more interesting view points.

Yeah, that's a huge problem I've always had. Everything close together is in proportion, but I can easily end up with half of what I'm drawing being twice the size of the other half if it's anything fairly big. It's so odd, I'm not sure what to do about it.

How would I put something on a graph? You mean like just superimpose a picture onto a graph in paint or photoshop or something, so that I can get a sense of scale while I'm drawing it?

Yeah you could do that. I'm talking about something like a 10x10 graph here by the way, not one with tiny squares.

Oh. I have no idea what a 10x10 graph is. I'm having lots of fun trying to draw just the lines of things, though. I can see them all, yet I can't draw them. It's not so much a mental block as an inability to keep the scale and shape of lines right.

I was just giving dimensions when I said 10x10. You know, 10 squares by 10 squares. >_>
