Try the Goomba Color emulator. It's what I used on a G6 for GBC emulation.

Yeah, I was also dissapointed to see that the default Goomba emulator only played GB games.

G6 is a GBA flashcard. Goomba Color is made to run on GBA hardware, not DS, so it won't work in slot 1 (the DS game slot). I've been thinking I may as well get a GBA flash card though, so I'll see what my options are (the only ones I could find in Akiba were made specifically for the Lite, so they won't fit into the cartridge slot of the DS Phat, but I could try looking again).

I tried a Genesis emulator. It's amazing, it works almost perfectly. It's not quite as good as NES emulation and in RPGs it's very hard to read the text because it gets squished, but this just makes it even more depressing that there's no decent SNES emulator for the DS.

well sure, but I don't want to buy a PSP and go through all the trouble of getting it to be able to play homebrew. with the DS you just put the emulator and rom on the card and you're ready to go. I already have a DS to play all the DS games I want, so retro emulation is just a bonus for me.

I would have no use for the PSP other than for emulation, so unless you can give me a CLEAR STEP BY STEP set of instructions Ill be sticking with the DS.

Well, I did end up getting a used PSP and downgrading to 1.5. >_> I doubt I'll be spending money on any games for it.

SNES emulation isn't nearly as good as I thought it would be; FE4 runs really slow, and it's depressing to see that almost all emulators for the system haven't been updated since 2005. Genesis and GBA emulation are supposed to be really good, though.

EDIT: Alright, it took a lot of pain-in-the-ass research and messing with options, but I got a SNES emulator running at consistent full speed on my PSP. Awesome.

snes emulator bad? I just downloaded an update and it runs perfectly.

that's what I used. I always hated the snes emulator because it sucked and to get it to work you needed to mess with 500 billion options that i dunno how to use. With that one you should be fine.

No I got the latest version of SNES9x working. Turns out it was last updated sometime in late 2007 though the sites that usually have up-to-date info on emulators were for some reason horribly outdated.

The options are pretty straightforward imo (PSP clock speed and sound frequency seem to have the biggest effect on performance, and setting frame skip to 1 helps a lot for more intensive games) and it runs a lot better now that I'm using the emulator in kernel mode. I got Mega Man X and FE4 running at full speed.

I might need to get a PSP for PSP, PS1, SNES etc..

DS works fine for both DS and GBA emulation for me.

I might need to get a PSP for PSP, PS1, SNES etc..

DS works fine for both DS and GBA emulation for me.

As far as I can tell, there are worthwhile emulators (and/or can natively play) available for the following major systems on the DS and PSP:

DS slot 1:
DS, NES, Genesis

DS slot 2 (GBA slot):
GBA, GB, GBC, NES

PSP (with a phat and only with firmware version 1.0 or 1.5... of which obtaining can be quite difficult, since, depending on the version you have, you may need numerous other upgrades and other downgrades, though it IS possible):
PS1, PSP, NES, SNES, GBA, Genesis, GB/GBC

Strictly for emulation, PSP has a lot more options, but getting it to work is much harder than with the DS or GBA, which only require a flash cart.

To get back on topic... if emulation is considered a factor, the quality of games on the DS and PSP is debatable I guess (not that any PSP games really catch my interest), though the PSP is the clear winner on the emulation front if you can get it working, not only due to more choices and more accurate emulation, but also because of the screen size (with natively run games it may not matter much compared to the DS, but with RPGs from the SNES and Genesis with small text, it's a big help).

Well, despite space limitations, plenty of recent DS games have a lot of voice acting, too. FFIV has tons, and Disgaea DS has much of (all of? haven't finished it) the acting from the PS2 game. Voice acting's not done too often on the DS though.

honestly you shouldn't need to use 1.0 or 1.50 for psp. You should be able to find a custom hacked firmware of just about any of the newer ones, and can upgrade from 1.50 to the custom one. Receive all the benefits of the sony update (being able to play UMD games, more option kinda stuff for the home screen) and still have homebrew.

PSP has some UMD games worth playing, I just find locking yourself to only hombrew to be kinda wasteful. Seeing as you can do both.
