Seeing as how the U.S. owned it for ~50 years, I'd assume English is spoken more widely there than in a lot of other Asian countries, even if it's main language is still Spanish.

Pass/fail level doesn't really matter. The difficulty of the class is what counts.

That said, I'll probably be getting an A- in Calculus II (Integrals and series) as long as I don't get Taylor's Series'd too heavily.

Our final had Taylor series, several different kinds and methods of set summation, radius and integral of convergence, QR and PLU factorization, Kernels, orthogonal projections, images of matrices, cross and dot products, diagonalization, determinants, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, permutation matrices, Simpson's rule and a couple of other things on it.

We did integration halfway through calc I.
The opinions expressed in the above post are totally and completely correct. If you disagree with them, you are wrong, there's just no other way to put it.

I've seen knights in armor panic at the first hint of battle. And I've seen the lowliest, unarmed squire pull a spear from his own body, to defend a dying horse. Nobility is not a birthright. It's defined by one's actions.

3rd most English speakers in Asia, I believe.

At any rate, Koreans and other peoples come here to learn English. Seriously. There are a helluva lot of Koreans here right now. And they're increasing.

Oh. Wow. I had no idea. How fascinating!

I figured you guys spoke mostly Spanish or Tagalog. Fascinating indeed.

In all reality, most people speak their own provincial dialects instead of Tagalog for the most part.

So people from Manila would speak Tagalog, people from Iloilo and Antique(lol, me) would speak Hiligaynon or Karay-a, people from Cebu would speak Cebuano....etc.

All of these have Spanish roots, but with certain differences. For example, if you spoke Hiligaynon, you could understand Karay-a, albeit a little confusion with some words, but you'd have a hard time understanding Cebuano.

Add to that all the other provinces' respective dialects, and you'll understand why there's a need for a language everybody understands aside from their own respective dialects.

For example, a simple English sentence like "Are you coming?" would come out like this:

Hiligaynon -> "Upod ka?"
Karay-a -> "Tawas timo?"
Tagalog -> "Sasama ka ba?"

See the difference?

Also, some words in some dialects have other meanings in some. For example, "bulbul", in Hiligaynon, means body hair collectively (hair on your head doesn't count). But in Tagalog, it means pubic hair exclusively.

So you would see the inevitable weird looks you would get if you said your hair was standing in Hiligaynon if you were in Manila.

I myself speak Hiligaynon, Tagalog, Karay-a, a little bit of Spanish, some Italian, and English.

That really is fascinating!

I didn't realize there were dialects beyond Tagalog. It just seemed that in modern times, that stuff would have been done away with.

I must say, while I'm sure each dialect isn't too particularly hard for you to learn(since they are based in the same places, so likely have a lot of similar elements even if wording is usually different), that's quite impressive indeed.

Not really. most dialects also have different speeds at which they are spoken. For example, Cebuano is frigging fast, so most people have a hard time learning it.

Although basic words like "me", "you", and "shit" are omnipresent, most of the dialects are diverse and hard to understand unless you speak that dialect.

Oh. Wow. I'm even more impressed. But why learn two extra dialects when you already learn an omnipresent language?

Not everyone will be able to speak Tagalog, and occasionally, there are people who speak it so bad you won't be able to understand. The same case in English, there are people who butcher the language, horribly so.

And there's less chance of getting misunderstood when you're speaking to someone who speaks the same dialect.

Ah, yeah. It's just hard for me to think how you guys can really have so many distinct dialects. I knew China has many, because many areas are still geographically cut off, but I did not know that about the Philippines. I can't imagine possibly not being able to speak understandably with people from my own country(unless they're batshit insane or severely abuse drugs).

*already knew that people from other countries are sent to learn English in the Philippines*

*also already knew about other dialects such as Bisayan, Cebuano, Kapampagan, llocano, and others*

I feel proud.

Edit - Actually, the above would be ethnic groups.

Yep. Although most of the dialects are named after ethnic groups.

Also, traditionally, it's Visayan, although all of the dialects in the Visayas are called Bisaya.

And F3n, it's an archipelago. How geographically cut off can you get? =D
