It will have something to do with the cruelties done to Native Americans and how they don't have a month. |

By stating that it is a BLACK history month, it IS saying that Blacks deserve a month, and other races don't. Yeah, for about 100 years they were slaves. 1705 to 1810, blacks were officially slaves. After that, they were treated poorly. So? Why do they deserve a month, because for 100 years, they were slaves? That's what, 3, 4 generations at the MOST? Slavery ended nearly 200 years ago. So what oppression were they facing? The same that any person in poverty would. After they were slaves, a lot of them had a hard time being anything more than grunt labor-- yes, that was to blame largely on society. Yes, that was awful. Ok, I know that, I know a lot about the Civil Rights Movement. So for 100 years, and for 100 years after, blacks were either slaves or low class. Now let's fast forward to current days. Everyone is equal. NO ONE from the time of the Jim Crow Laws(and other such things) is still alive, much less anyone from the days of slavery. But now, let's look at this for a minute. I'm looking at Wikipedia at all the notable inventors and scientists that are african american. Here I am, reading these, and I can't really find any article that says they came from a broken life, lived in total poverty, or were in a particularly oppressed area. Now, I can't read this whole list right now, but I imagine there are only a few that were like that, if any. There is only one person who was born in the middle of the slave years, to boot. So, what do we see here? The notable Black inventors and scientists weren't oppressed, they had ways to become educated and the means to further their life. So then, if we are celebrating what they did, and not the black race, why are we celebrating them for a month at all? If they had pretty much the standard life that the white folk of the time did, then we aren't celebrating how they triumphed under oppression, now are we? So let's think about this. As you said, we aren't celebrating the Black race as a race, but only certain blacks. But then, we also learned that they weren't oppressed and they had in fact hardly been oppressed, many of them from wealthy(ish) families. So, if we aren't celebrating the race, and we aren't celebrating people overcoming difficult times and oppression, why are we celebrating? What is the purpose? Cause if we have a month to celebrate the great BLACKS, then why don't we have a month to celebrate the great WHITES, LATINOS and ASIANS? Why is it OK to be racist in this case? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- And on the issue of Historically Black Schools: I concede. It is a fact that people whom aren't black can go there. While I seriously don't think that saying "Historically Black" is doing anything to help abolish racism, I think it is fine for them to exist, I s'pose. Though, I'm concerned whether they are actually good schools or not, because you shouldn't advertise you are "special"(I use that loosely) if you aren't an actually decent or better college. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If they renamed it from Black to African, that would be much better. Africa, much less its history, is rarely spoken about. It might actually be a good idea to teach people about Africa. Though, considering they haven't been civil for a long time(if ever, in some cases), I don't know how much actual History you can get. |

Wow, how civil of you. Insulting someone because they have a different view as you. Holy shit am I glad that being a scientist means I get to live in an ivory tower. I don't know if I could deal with most of the population. |
