I wish to extend my thanks to the Canberra Yacht Club and Elliott 7 Class Association for hosting a great one-day event on lovely Lake Burley Griffin. The conditions were near ideal and the hospitality and company was great.

Thanks to the sponsors for making the event possible and supplying the boozy prizes!

I felt that we certainly had "Taking Back Sunday" moving through the water better than we did at the NSW State Titles and look forward to future class events. It's amazing how much you can learn over the course of a weekend regatta.

Unfortunately our Cherub commitments will prevent "Taking Back Sunday" from competing in further E7 Association sanctioned events this season, however we anticipate that we'll be back next season to compete in the Grand Prix Series with a vengeance! In the mean time, TBS will ply the Parramatta River on Tuesday nights, hopefully threatening yachts nearly twice her size...

On another matter, I noticed that there was a boat running around with a photographer and what appeared to be a television station cameraman. Was this the case, and if so, will the photos and/or footage be posted on this site? Did anyone catch the evening news and see the footage.

Most importantly, thanks to my great crew of Canberra locals - Craig and Mel Davidson, Trent Davidson and his partner Julie Percival.

Hey 48, glad you and Jimmy made it, knew you would enjoy it. You lot had her going great, and you should be wrapped with the effort.

We had a great time, and it was fantastic to see the competitiveness of the whole fleet.

I'm sure we will try and get some footage and will get some pics for you. Check the class website as the wonderful webmaster has already loaded up.

Just looking at the calendar - "Taking Back Sunday" will more than likely be at the Bateman's Bay Regatta in April.

I still have a few months of nagging ahead of me if I want to get permission from The Boss to sail TBS at Skandia Geelong Week.

Maybe I'll just fly down and sail on someone else's boat? Nah, that would be cheating on TBS!

Gotta come to Geelong Andrew. We have a ball and great racing. The Elliott 7 is perfect for Corio Bay, if there are any issues we can sort with your Missus let us know.

Thanks for the offer - I really needed her to sail on the boat at the Spring Cup so she could have seen how close the racing was and that the boat is indeed competitive when sailed well.

With a few twilight races in her wake she might realise that a week in Melbourne won't be such a bad thing. Last year we went to the Australian Open on a lay day - she enjoyed that - so perhaps other non-sailing related activities might help.

I guess the other issue will be organsing a committed crew. Don't think that will be too hard, but I assume that I'll need to get onto that soon...

The way to do Geelong is drive with half the crew to Albury on Tuesday arvo, then get to Geelong on Wed lunch, the other half fly in to Avalon on Crapstar.

Go for a practice on Wed arvo, race Thurs, Fri and Sat then those that flew down drive home and the other half fly home with a hangover.

Plus get on the fizz each night

On the budget front, stay at Barwon Valley Trailer Park $100 a night for a crap cabin $10 cab to and from the club. By a case of takeaway beer from the club for $40, as it cheaper than paying $5 a can, take it back to the boat and drink it there

Looks like you've put some thought into that one! You'd want at least two in the car for the drive down - that way there's more stuff to talk about, although I'd be doing most of the talking, so it'd be more a case of having people to listen! I shouldn't have any shortage of willing volunteers, wouldn't you think?

So you get the take-away beers (Carlton Draught - this Nation's finest), raft half a dozen E7's together, each E7 has a different case onboard, so it's like being at the bar anyway, then you poach the scenery off the big boats by wooing them with some take-away bubbly.

What are the costs?

Fuel
1000km from Sydney (x2) X assume 15.5 litres/100km (Mazda 6) = 310 litres 98RON X $1.35/litre = $418.50 + running around fuel - allow $40.00 (half tank) = $458.50

Accommodation
5 nights X 5 persons X (assume $60.00/head?) for cabin/ordinary accommodation = $1,500.00

Flights
Assume 3 are flying with Jetstar and they have not exceeded the baggage limit like we did last year (cost $260.00 in fees), therefore;
3 x $100.00 each way = $600.00

Transfers
Taxis - allow 4 days X $10.00 per taxi each way = $80.00

Booze
Allow equivalent of a case/day (obviously bar money/case money will level out, some won't consume as much as others).
$45.00/day X allow 4 days = $180.00 x 5 = $900.00

General expenses (incl. food, emergency maintenance, outboard fuel etc)
Allow $50.00 per day/head X 5 days X 5 crew = $1,250.00

These are conservative estimates, and I'm sure the costs could be minimised here and there. The total regatta cost not including entry fees is:

$4,788.50 or around $957.70 per head.

This figure will be slightly different in everyone's individual circumstances (i.e. most cars towing an E7 will use more than my Mazda's 15.5 litres/100km average) assuming travel speed of between 110kph and 120kph on the freeway.

Much of this expense could be limited with significantly less expenditure on booze and general expenses and taking another person or two in the car.

Thoughts? Agree/disagree?

4 Days not 5
4 People not 5 (you need to find some big friends)
$150 per night for a van not $300

So
Fuel $500
Accomodation $600
Flights $400
Taxis - Pick them up from the airport
Booze $1000
General $800
Total $3300 - $800 per head

I thought you said it was Tuesday to Saturday - you still need accommodation on Tuesday night (okay - not for everyone) and Saturday night.

You added extra booze money - surely the calculations were excessive. If you have smaller crew, they drink less, which is cheaper. But I guess that is offset in the extra person's consumption.

I don't really have any big friends. My old man is 5'11 and 100kg, but I doubt he'd be keen to sail with my mob. Five people is funnier than four, too.

General costs of $50.00/head/day is fair, I reckon. Breakfast is cheap (cereal, fruit, yogurt, milk, juice etc), lunch is $10.00 and dinner at least $20.00 when the cooking facilities at the cabin aren't too good. That only leaves $20.00 for miscellaneous providing you eat within budget each day.

I agree - taxi costs can be eliminated if you bring your missus and she drives the crew around instead of drinking.

I guess $800.00-$850.00 per head would be achievable.

Jim,

At the Canberra Rugby Club you were asking myself and Pillow whether a $200.00 fuel voucher would help in making the decision to attend an interstate regatta.

At the time I said it probably wouldn't be the deciding factor because if I wanted to attend the regatta I would attend regardless of the cost (within reason, of course). Probably also said that boats can be likened to a hole in the water where you throw your money. Noting the above, I also said it would "help" make the decision to attend the regatta.

Just thinking about that conversation, and others I had with some of the other owners/skippers, many of us are from skiff backgrounds and looking back on the various classes I have sailed over the years and the clubs where I have sailed them from (Belmont 16ft Skiff Club and Georges River 16ft Skiff Club in particular), I realised that I have been fortunate enough to be financially supported by both of these clubs when attending National Titles.

Both of these Clubs have been particularly generous over the years (I guess we have poker machines and sailors on the Board of Directors to thank for that), and the cost of attending National Titles interstate has been previously offset by this support.

Consequently, whilst my opinion does not change, the help of sponsors and home Clubs is greatly appreciated. I usually find that a regatta ends up costing slightly more than you anticipated anyway.
