Cushions; Question regarding cushions

How are we all?

We are new to the class having picked up Number 48 on ANZAC Day. This particular boat has never had a set of cushions, and now we need to get a set made up so we can stay on the boat when we come away to all the regattas.

We've managed to get some quotes for the cushions, but they seem a little high. One bloke (who I was told had templates) reckons that all E7's are different inside (funny, considering they are a production boat...) and that he'd need to measure it up. However, we heard that he made a set without seeing a boat for around $1200.

Another general upholsterer has quoted $1600-$1800 for marine foam, a breathable liner and commercial grade "moleskin" type fabric. Unfortunately, he doesn't have templates, so will cut and measure the foam in the boat to make them fit perfectly. This to me seems like the best idea, despite the addtional cost. Same bloke can make them for $1400 using normal foam, but since they'll get wet, this probably isn't too good an idea.

I guess our questions are as follows:

1. Are there any templates floating around in the Sydney metropolitan area? Jim Walsh has kindly advised that we can borrow Woof's cushions, but I'd rather not bother him.

2. Has anyone had cushions made up recently, and if so, is the $1600-$1800 quote reasonable or are we getting ripped off?

3. The marine foam - is this our best bet, or would you run with the cheaper non-water resistant stuff?

Thanks for your assistance,

Andrew & Amy

Danny had some made for Serious Fun, I think they were about $1000 and that was probably 4-5 years ago. They now reside on WalterTurnbull. They are not that fancy, and not waterproof, but are comfy when dry. Just did Bay 2 Bay with them on, but usually when going around the cans we would stow in the car until bedtime.

Welcome to the fleet, and feel free to bother Jimmy, he loves it. And we can't do it often enough, so you will earn some points straight away.

Thanks Steve,

We took it out for its first run with us on Sunday and worked out pretty quickly that we wouldn't need the cushions straight away. We'll probably wait until we start doing overnighters and general regattas with the Association.

Are there any regattas held in Sydney over Winter where we might be able to line up another E7 or two? We saw an E23 on the Parramatta River off Wrights Point, Drummoyne last Sunday. It's an E7 hull with a different cockpit and no coach house. It also appeared to have an assymetric bow sprit, masthead kite and a larger, roachier main. It wasn't hanging about either...

Jimmy,

You've got it all wrong - you're looking at Sunday and Monday's forecast. I think the light weather forecast is "not shit". I know you have a "No wind, no Woof" rule, but I reckon you should come out regardless of the wind and race me and my ace crew of Cherub sailors (who I am yet to ask if they want to sail on Sunday).

What time is this CYC Winter race, and where are you rigging at? Drummoyne ramp is superb - except for the number of people who use it. This week we shouldn't have hangovers, so we might get their earlier and have more time to rig.

Regards,

Andrew
