Tournament Format

Each weight class is initially split into three heats of four competitors. They participate in eight trials, gaining points depending on how well they do in them. The bot with the most points in each heat at the end of eight events will progress to the grand final, which uses the same format as the heats.
In addition, one wild card entry will be decided, via a community vote, out of the bots that came second in their heats.

The heats are as follows.

Lightweights

Heat A:
Ramshock (Patrickrowberry)
Solstice (British-Robotics)
Barry Stanton Tribute Bot (Playzooki)
Teardrop (NoiseyGiraffe)

Heat B:
Honeycomb (RobotWarsLuver)
Angel of the North (Mole55)
The Gourmet (Attackfrog)
Mind in a P-R-O-G-R-A-M (Me)

Heat C:
Endless Clowns (The_Angry_Goat)
Traposphere (Wolf51-50)
The Revenge of Psychosprout (Rocket_III)
Override (NFX)

Heavyweights

Heat A:
Gigatron (British-Robotics)
Hercules (Attackfrog)
Boy Band (Playzooki)
The Animals (Mole55)

Heat B:
MiDAS (NFX)
LowRider (NoiseyGiraffe)
Compound Fracture (Hooray for Lexan)
Neuromancer (The_Angry_Goat)

Heat C:
Helepolis (Rocket_III)
Arms of the Law (Patrickrowberry)
Heartbreaker (RobotWarsLuver)
Heian Alien (Me)

Currently the only writers are myself and The_Angry_Goat, so if anyone else wishes to help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Events: Overview

Every week, each heat of bots will face a new event. At the start of the week, around the same time that the previous event's results are posted, the next week's event will be revealed, and any needed threads set up. You will then have one week to post your RPs for said event. Event selection follows some set guidelines, which will be indicated in posts throughout this week. Feel free to use them to predict what you'll be up to next.

  • Each heat will not have any duplicate events, excluding different kinds of Combat events.

  • Every heat contains two Combat events, one Gauntlet event and one Labyrinth event. These usually take place within the first five weeks.

  • One heat in each weight class has both Pinball and Soccer events, with the other two only having one of the two each.

  • Wetropolis, Pitball, the Rollercoaster, King of the Hill, Collateral Damage, the Findlay Special, Bowling and the Grand International only occur once per weight class in the heats, so there's only about a 33% chance you'll be in that trial, assuming you don't make the Final.

Event Analysis: Combat

Combat is a staple of ARC, and this event is no exception.

All battles will take place within the standard ARC arena. There are three kinds of battle that will occur in RoBattle, though only two will be discussed currently.

The first is standard 1 on 1 combat. The bots participating in this event will be randomly paired off to duel one another, following standard fight procedure. Points are awarded to winners as follows:

  • 3 points for a victory via KO.

  • 2 points for a victory via Judge's Decision.

  • 1 point for a loss via Judge's Decision.

  • No points for a loss via KO.

The second, more interesting kind of combat, will be 2v2 matches, This is Fighting Robots style. Again, the bots participating will be randomly paired off, though this time they will be teammates, aiming to take down the opposition. A victory is automatically awarded if the match time limit is reached and one side has more mobile entrants than the other.
Unlike normal RP procedure, each team will have their own strategy thread, in which they can discuss their strategy together for fighting the opponent. You can't look in your opponent's thread, of course. You may also discuss via other mediums (IRL, Discord, whatever), but the final battle plans must end up in your team's thread. You may RP for your teammate's bot, if they prove unable to be contacted to discuss strategy with.
Points are awarded as follows for the fights. Both bots in a team get the same score.

  • 3 points for a victory that does not involve a Judge's Decision.

  • 2 points for a victory via a Judge's Decision.

  • 1 point for a loss via a Judge's Decision.

  • 0 points for a loss that does not involve a Judge's Decision.

Feel free to nominate other events to be the next ones to be fully analysed for next time.

Event Analysis: Football

The English football team have a reputation for fair play. That's probably because Harry Kane's never tried to kill the opposition with a chainsaw.

Football matches will take place in an appropriately large octagonal arena, with a single goal taking up one face. Said goal is guarded by a slow moving blocker, which moves back and forth along the length of the goal line, taking up a maximum of a quarter of it at once. The blocker doesn't actively aim to stop the ball, it just continuously moves.

The first robot to successfully score a goal will be awarded 3 points, and removed from the arena, so the remaining three bots can begin a new round, repeating until all but one bot has scored. The second to score gets 2 points, the third gets one point, and the last gets zero.

All four competitors in the event enter the arena at once, placed evenly around the arena, against one of the non-cardinal walls, facing the centre. A ball, equal in size to a soccer ball, but formed of something less destructible, is placed in the centre at the beginning of each round. The position of each bot will be indicated during the announcement post, being between the top left, top right, bottom left and bottom right walls, with the top wall being defined as the goal wall. Reset positions are adjusted by shifting robots clockwise, always keeping one robot in the bottom left.

As an example:

  • Bots A, B, C and D are participating in the event. Bot A is placed in the top left, B in the top right, C in the bottom left, and D in the bottom right.

  • Bot B wins the first round, so is removed and awarded 3 points. On the reset for the second round, A is moved to the top right position, with neither C nor D changing position.

  • Bot C wins the second round, so is removed and awarded 2 points. On the reset for the final round, D is moved to the bottom left position, and A is moved to the bottom right position.

High power weapons, defined as any sort of weapon with 8 or more power, is either tuned down to act as if it was running at 7 (or less) power, or completely disabled, at the choice of the RPer.

Event Analysis: Pitball

Three bots go bashin' and crashin' and smashin' into a steel ball, THAT'S ON FIRE! This is a game for people with not pity and zero tolerance for boredom!

Pitball matches take place in an enormous circular rubble pit, 25 meters in diameter. The central 15 meters of the arena is flat and paved with panelling, but the outer edge is a 30 degree incline up rubble.

Robots are positioned anywhere they wish along the outer edge of the panelled floor, though all bots must face parallel to the edge, thus facing sideways relative to the centre of the arena. The Pitball, a gigantic steel wireframe ball with a flaming centre, roughly the size of an 8 year old, is rolled into the arena from a random suitable position along the outer rubble edge to start the match. Bots may only start moving once the Pitball reaches the centre, though.

A goal is scored when a robot pushes the Pitball up and over the outer lip of the wall. The first robot to successfully score a goal will be awarded 3 points, and removed from the arena, so the remaining three bots can begin a new round, returning to the starting positions, repeating until all but one bot has scored. The second to score gets 2 points, the third gets one point, and the last gets zero.

High power weapons, defined as any sort of weapon with 8 or more power, is either tuned down to act as if it was running at 7 (or less) power, or completely disabled, at the choice of the RPer. In addition, all flippers are disabled entirely, though lifters are allowed. No lobbing the ball!

Event Analysis: Gauntlet

In the olden days, a gauntlet was a type of glove. Right, roboteers, I challenge you to be more interesting than that.

For those less familiar with the Robotica Gauntlet, it looks something like this.

Posted Image

Robots are paired off, then placed in the same corner of the diamond, facing down different sides, facing some barriers, made from a wooden panel, metal cans, bricks, and concrete paving stones, in that order. Each robot completes their own two legs of the diamond and then returns through the opponent's route, including their rubble, before climbing a ramp up to the Forest of Glass, a bunch of vertical glass strips in the centre of the diamond. When all the glass strips were broken, a final glass sheet lowered, smashing it concludes the Gauntlet. Alternatively, if three minutes pass, the Gauntlet is over.

Points are awarded as follows:

  • 3 points are awarded to bots that win the Gauntlet by smashing the final sheet.

  • 2 points are awarded to bots that make it into the Forest of Glass.

  • 1 point is awarded to bots that make it through all four of their own barriers.

  • 0 points are awarded to bots that fail to clear all of their barriers.

Event Analysis: Labyrinth

It's time to take these two robots to task, Robotica style!

The Labyrinth arena looks like this. Apologies for crap quality, but I'm working with what I can get. I strongly advise you watch an episode of season 2 or 3 of Robotica to get a feel for it.

Posted Image

Robots will be paired off to duke it out in the Labyrinth. The two start in the centre, a revolving walled turntable to allow the bots to duel in a tight space for a few second before they can escape. Seven panes of glass, indicated by the white panels, are placed behind various obstacles, and each is worth a value of points for breaking them. (These aren't the same points as the ones that carry between events, don't worry!) Each robot is affixed with a special solid rod that allows them to strike and break the glass, if their design is not normally able to. You may choose where this goes. The obstacles are as follows:

  • Push Box (Bottom right): A large, heavy metal box, that must be pushed back to access the glass. 15 points.

  • Lifting Spikes (Bottom left): Basically the spikes from the Robot Wars reboot, but there's sixteen of them in a square. 15 points.

  • Suspension Bridge (Top left): A loose, wobbly bridge, that curves a bit. Vicious to bots with low ground clearance. 20 points.

  • Flipper (Top): A floor flipper, set to go off at regular invervals. Time your approach correctly to avoid getting launched. 20 points.

  • Rollers (Bottom): A set of wrecking balls, rollers and square divots to catch those without a powerful enough drive train. 25 points

  • Sandbox (Top right): A pit of sand you've gotta drive through. Yup. 25 points.

  • Final Barrier (Right): Only unlocks when all six glass strips are broken, or in the final minute. Only a folding door stands between you and 30 points.

If a robot becomes immobilised in such a way that prevents access to the glass strip, it is counted as broken, but the point value is deducted from the immobilised bot's score.

Once the event has concluded, either once the Final Barrier is broken or five minutes have passed, points are awarded as follows:

  • 3 points are awarded to the robot that has the most points.

  • 2 points are awarded to the losing bot, if they acquired 50 or more points.

  • 1 point is awarded to the losing bot, if they acquired at least 1 point.

  • 0 points are awarded to the losing bot, if they acquired 0 or less points.

Event Analysis: Pinball

Now, according to The Who, all you need to be a 'Pinball Wizard' are supple wrists. But being a teenage boy will have no advantage in this particular contest. Here, you need guts and mechanical power! Each of our surviving robots will try and score as many points as possible, by attempting various challenges...the harder the challenge, the bigger the points! Whoever gets the lowest score will be thrown into the mods and rockers outside!

Posted Image

Robots take it in turns performing timed runs in the Pinball arena, scoring points. (These aren't the same points as the ones that carry between events, don't worry!) Each robot is given one minute in the Pinball arena to score as many points as you can. The Pit is open, but is is shallow enough that bots with a high enough ground clearance can escape. Obstacle points are as follows:

  • Barrel stacks: Two stacks of six barrels in the corners. 5 points per barrel tipped over.

  • Giant sphere: An enormous metal sphere, initially placed between the seesaw and the right side target. 25 points for pitting the sphere.

  • See-saw: A big see-saw in the centre of the arena. 20 points for driving over it without falling off, once per run.

  • Multiball release: A strange contraption that discharges a swarm of ten balls when impacted. 10 points for releasing the balls (Once per run), 5 points per ball pitted.

  • Swinging car doors: A pair of car doors on a pivot, that flip when driven through. 25 points for a successful flip, once per run.

  • Side targets: Tyres mounted on the arena wall, guarded by a blocker moving across the border of the semicircle, like the Football goalie. Budget cuts mean we don't get the House Robots. :( Simply touch the tyres to score. 50 points for the side walls, 75 for the rear wall, which has two blockers.

The bot that scores the most points wins 3 points, and so on downwards. Ties result in both bots being awarded the higher of the point scores they're tied for.

I just want to bring this up, nobody publicly brought this up but I don't wanna let it slip either.

Playzooki's RP for Boy Band against The Animals now says "Post deleted for needless overly explicit content, and nothing even remotely resembling an RP.", after a justified edit of NFX. What was there was sexually explicit to say the least.

Playzooki ffs don't be a moron. I am fine with the odd shitpost but quite frankly the world's stuffed with underage fans of combat robotics, I was one myself, and we really, REALLY can't use a specific shitpost like that here. You know you have had a ban for less than that man, please...

Event Analysis: Bowling

Bowling might be a bit of a dull sport normally, but the bowling balls are bionic, the skittles are gigantic, and the only spares are the body parts needed afterwards!

The Bowling lane looks something like this. Ten gigantic pins at the end of a soaped up bowling lane.

Posted Image

Robots take it in turns to drive their robot down the bowling lane, where the lubrication of the floor significantly hampers traction, acting as a -5. You get a short, unlubricated run-up though to build up speed, and you can attempt to direct your bot as it goes down the lane, to knock over as many pins as possible. Teams get two attempts to knock over as many pins as possible, with the most points being awarded to those who score the most across their runs. Ties will be determined by who scored more on their first attempt, and if they're still tied, both bots are awarded the higher of the point scores they're tied for.

I'm not expecting long or complex RPs for this, but do your best to give your strategies for this.

Event Analysis: The Findlay Special

I'm sorry, but when we come to power, caravanning is going to be banned, and that's it. --Jeremy Clarkson

Posted Image

Robots are placed within four identical caravans, and tasked to destroy some key objects in the caravan as fast as possible, before escaping the caravan by any means, as quickly as possible.

The items in need of destroying are as follows:

  • TV (As pictured. Must have case or monitor broken open in some way to count.)

  • Flower Vase (As pictured. Must have vase smashed in some way to count.)

  • Cakes (As pictured. All pictured cakes must be knocked onto the floor or otherwise ruined to count.)

  • Cupboard (The one with the mirror on it, on the right of the picture. Contains various cooking supplies on two shelves. Must have at least 30% of contents removed, or the door ripped off, to count.)

Three out of four must be destroyed before your robot escapes the caravan, or you are disqualified, and receive 0 points (and must leave via the Fail Door). Escaping is simply defined as your robot touching the ground outside of the caravan, either through battering down the door out, tearing through the wall or floor, or something else I can't think of. The most points are awarded to those that clear the event in the fastest time. If your robot is immobilised, you will also receive 0 points.

Event Analysis: Collateral Damage

Woah --Crash Bandicoot, probably

Collateral Damage will take place with all four robots within the standard ARC arena. All four machines start in the centre of the arena, facing outwards, towards the four corners of the arena, instead of in the usual starting boxes. This is because the outside walls have been layered with lines upon lines of boxes, forming a border two boxes thick, one box tall, and fifteen boxes long. Each box is roughly 1 meter in each dimension, and are of one of three different kinds.

  • Wooden crates. They release a small plume of red smoke when cracked open enough. They are the most numerous, filling in any space in the border not taken up by another box. Worth 1 point, 0 Armour, 1 HP.

  • Metal crates. A bit tougher than the wooden crates, these footplate aluminium boxes shouldn't be much harder to bust open. They release a plume of teal smoke when cracked open enough. They border the area around golden crates. Worth 3 points, 4 Armour, 3 HP.

  • Golden crates. Metal boxes, with a nice brass finish to them. They release a huge plume of yellow smoke when cracked open enough. They fill out only a small fraction of the border, only eight total in the arena, four in the outermost corners, and four in the outer edge of the centre of each border. Worth 10 points, 8 Armour, 5 HP.
Here's a rough diagram showing what I mean. Black squares are the outer perimeter of the arena, brown squares are the wooden crates, silver are the metal crates, and gold are the golden crates.

Posted Image

Each box has a different Armour and HP value. Armour matches to the standard combat scale to determine how much damage you deal to them. HP is a sink of how much damage is dealt to each, with the box breaking open if it reaches 0. Attacks will always deal a minimum damage of 1, so you can still bust open a golden crate by ramming it into the wall 5 times, even if you have incredibly low Speed and Torque.

In addition to the above, all arena hazards have been disabled. Competitors have 30 seconds to smash as many boxes as they can within the time limit, in order to score the most points. The bot that scores the most points wins 3 points, and so on downwards. Ties result in both bots being awarded the higher of the point scores they're tied for.

Event Analysis: Wetropolis

The awesome beauty of Mother Nature. Unspoiled by the cruel intrusion of man... HAH!

Wetropolis takes place with robots taking turns performing runs in a specially designed arena, with an uneven, flooded terrain. Here's a rough diagram. For reference, the arena is approximately 40m in diameter. Regions between water depth are smoothed, so no need to climb up and down stairs.

Posted Image

Key:

  • Blue: Water depth of 1 inch (LWs)/ 1.5 inches (HWs)
  • Green: Water depth of 2 inches (LWs)/ 3 incles (HWs)
  • Yellow: Water depth of 3 inches (LWs)/ 4.5 inches (HWs)
  • Red: Water depth of 4 inches (LWs)/ 6 inches (HWs)
  • Black: Arena wall
  • Black & white circles: Target bollard
  • Purple: Hazard pole

Each team chooses one of the four entrances (the gaps in the corners) to begin in. Teams can choose the same entrance if they wish. One at a time, their robot must enter via that entrance, drive to a target bollard, then reverse a full 360 degree loop around it, before returning to forwards movement to progress to the next one, et cetera. The timer starts once the robot leaves their starting entrance, and stops once the robot returns to the same entrance, having reversed around all three bollards. If a clusterbot is participating, the same part of the bot must reverse around all three bollards to count. The numerous hazard poles can be driven over with little physical hindrance, but each one touched by the robot causes them to incur a ten second time penalty, added onto their total time at the end of their run.

As you may have noticed, the arena is flooded. Water damage will occur if your bot's chassis is submerged in water for at least a number of seconds equal to 1.5x its chassis Armour value. It deals 1 damage to internals, before the timer resets. Who knew water was like a shitty flamethrower?

The most points are awarded to those that clear the event in the fastest time. If your robot is immobilised, via water damage or otherwise, you will also receive 0 points.

Event Analysis: Rollercoaster

The rollercoaster, the crown jewel of any theme park. However, with our coaster, you gotta drive your bot on it, and you're 15 feet in the air. Be thankful there's no inversions. yet.

Posted Image

(Image scale does not match the scale of the event's Rollercoaster. Our one's track is only 1m wide.)

Robots take it in turns making time trial runs across the Rollercoaster, starting at the gate on the left of the image, working their way across the coaster to the right gate as quickly as possible.

Obstacles, in order of appearance on the track:

  • Tilting ramp: A 15ft tall tilting ramp, carefully weighted so it drops when your bot nears the top end of the track. There's cushioning at the bottom, though, so any jostling will only be mild.
  • Inverse banked turn: A turn that tilts at a 45 degree angle outwards. Fortunately, there's some small lumps to help you keep your grip... or bounce you off the track.
  • Tilting ramp 2: Same as the first. You just get a bigger run-up this time, and less time to slow down before...
  • Angled tilting ramp: A tilted ramp, though this one can have its base down in one of three directions. Get it facing the right way by placing your bot just right, so you can progress.
  • Bridge: Small barriers wall the edges of this bridge, but if your driving's sloppy, you could easily go careening off the edge.
  • Banked turn: A 45 degree banked turn, thankfully inward banked this time. Make sure to turn enough for it, though.
  • Trick track: A set of three lumps on the edges of the track, aiming to tip over any bot that tries to gun it too hard along the final stretch.

Robots will incur a 20 second time penalty any time any of their wheels slip past the 5cm wide white borders on the edges of the track.

The most points are awarded to those that clear the event in the fastest time. If your robot is immobilised or drives entirely off of the track, you will receive 0 points.

Event Analysis: King of the Hill

I'm gonna kick your ass! -- Hank Hill

King of the Hill takes place with all four robots in the arena at once. (Image has Dubior Jr, a Lightweight, and Heian Alien, a Heavyweight walkerbot, in place for size reference. The arnea does have walls, but they're absent for arena visibility.)

Posted Image

The arena consists of nine dirt and gravel hills, each with a flag at the top. Each one is colour coded to a robot, and only that team is allowed to scale the hill and knock it down. Knocking down the wrong flag is an instant disqualification.

Posted Image

Four of the mounds have a two-tone colour. These can be captured by either of the two teams indicated by the colour. Only the first one to knock down the flag gets the points, though.

The central hill is black and larger than all other hills, and can only be captured by bots that have knocked down two of their own coloured flags. (Top tip: You can entirely prevent someone from winning, if both of their dual-colour hills are captured by their opponents.) Capturing the black flag ends the game.

Once the black flag is captured, points are awarded as follows:

  • 3 points to the team that captured the black flag.
  • 1 point to each other team per flag captured. (Max of 2.)

Event Analysis: Grand International

In England, the Grand National is the most notorious horse race they have, with horse and rider barely able to complete the course. Here at RoBattle, we've got our own version!

The Grand International takes place with all four bots racing two laps around the course. Simple as that, really. There are edge barriers on the course, but they're absent from the model for the sake of clarity. Going off the course is an instant 0 points, of course.

Top-down view.

First obstacle in the lap: A gently curved ramp.

Posted Image

Second and third obstacles are a hay bale wall over a sharp drop into water, and a rumble strip, to round out the first half of the circuit.

Posted Image

The second half of the circuit begins with a flat faced ramp.

Posted Image

It concludes with some hay bales up a ramp, and a jump over water. Depending on which lap it is, the bots either take another right turn back near the start line, or straight ahead for the finish line.

Three points are awarded to the first bot to finish, or the furthest bot around the course after five minutes. Two to the bot that got the next furthest around the course, and so on. 0 points are awarded to any bot to go off course.

Going to make a slight executive decision about this tournament, regarding the Tapatalk business. RoBattle's heats will be concluded before then, with week 8 of heats. From there, the finals will be postponed, until the move is completed. However, don't worry, there will still be two things to do.

1) RoBattle Off-Season. I was originally going to host this after the tournament, but I'll do it now because we've got the time. Basically each week, I'll post a single megathread, for an event of some kind. You may sign up with any bot, still under RoBattle rules, and then also provide RP for your bot in that event in the same post. I'll then write up results when I get around to it.

2) Wild Cards. Four bots are required to make it to the finals of RoBattle in each weight class, but only one from each heat is guaranteed. This vote will be for all second place bots, with the sole winner also qualifying for the finals. Expect more details when the vote goes live, at the end of Week 8.
