Week 1:

Featherweight:

Talons Out v Wyvern:

As in most matches, they both go out to try and do the wedge, in which Talons Out gets under and clamps, however Wyvern flips, and breaks the clamp, whilst breaking free. Oh dear. Laz comes in again, and lifts Wyvern. Wyvern is upside-down, however that can easily be fixed via torque reaction, whilst Talons Out tries to come in again. And lifts. And lifts. And lifts. Ad infinitum.

Eventually, the driver makes a mistake. Wyvern gets under, flips, and Talons Out flies. On landing, it is clear that the lifter is broken, and the wedge is fucked. Wyvern gets under again, and flips him again. On the second landing, Talons Out is apparently dead.

Winner by KO at 1:43, Wyvern!

Heavyweight:

Aphelion v Permafrost:

As normal, the robots go out and do the wedging thing, and Permafrost gets under. However, Aphelion wiggles off, and manages to get under Permafrost's side... who then also wiggles off.

This game of cat and mouse continues for a while, with both getting under the other, and then the other buggering off before the weapon can be used on him.

Eventually, Permafrost takes a moment or two too long to get off, and Aphelion gets a flip in. Aphelion throws over Permafrost, and then gets another in. And another. And another. Until Permafrost is against the wall. Fortunately for Badnik, the narrow gap between the outer wall and the inner wall is too small for Permafrost to fit in, and he just bounces off the outer wall.

Then Permafrost manages to run off, and then try and get back under Aphelion.

The cat and mouse game then proceeds to continue until the bell.

Aggression: 8-7 Permafrost
Damage: 9-6 Aphelion
Strategy: 8-7 Aphelion

By 24-21 Judges' Decision, the match goes to Aphelion!

MiDAS v Food Grade Plutonium:

As the match begins, both robots go out and try and get under the other. With it's slightly higher speed and traction, the edible nuclear fuel gets under MiDAS and starts to lift. MiDAS attempts to j-hook off, however, FGP's lifter is too fast, and merely feebly spins it's wheels. MiDAS is flipped, and whilst it tries to use it's axe to self-right, FGP clamps down and smashes MiDAS into the wall. This dislodges MiDAS, who gets thrown back onto it's wheels.

They both go in, and this time MiDAS wins, and manages to lift FGP over, whilst smashing at it with the axe, and trying to pin FGP. However, FGP drives away, and self-rights with the lifter.

Most of the match happens this way, and so I will skip to the buzzer:

Aggression: 9-6 MiDAS
Damage: 8-7 MiDAS
Strategy: 10-5 Food Grade Plutonium

By 23-22 Judges' Decision, the match goes to Food Grade Plutonium!

Trident v 02's Mentally Handicapped Cousin:

IDK why Jack’s flanking when he can cleanly get under the front, but he’s trying his damndest to do so! He is eventually able to do so, his weird car steering helping him circle better than a usual design could (also helping is the fact that 02’s approximately bus-length). He flips O2 onto its side, and in doing so, helps O2 discover why Chomp had those weird fin things on the sides of its orbital hammer. Every time O2 gets close to righting itself again, Trident just comes back in and shoves it a bit, and it goes back to flopping around. While this interaction resets the judge’s countdowns, it certainly gives attackfrog the control edge so far. After literally 2 minutes, O2 does finally get on its wheels, and this time lasts about 40 seconds instead of 20 (and gets a hit in!), before getting tipped back over.

Aggression: 12-3 Trident
Damage: 7-6 O2’s Mentally Handicapped Cousin
Strategy (control): 12-3 Trident

Your winner, in a 30-15 judge’s decision, is Trident!

Mechalis v NHS Mk3:

Gotta say, would not have expected two robots with such different weaponry to have such similar stats. Their similarity in drivetrain puts it more or less down to a battle of design, as Mechalis gets underneath NHS to start. Pyro quickly reverses, getting out before the crusher can pin him down. this time NHS is able to angle in a bit, and easily gets a flip in, mechalis beached on his wedge for a moment.

Now, before you go saying “oh hey look mechalis’ wheels are sticking out the back real obvious like, those are actually rollers, not wheels, according to its entry post. Or, at least I’d assume they are, since it not like there’s anything else that looks like a roller on the back of the bot. At any rate, Pyro’s now doing a good job of chaining flips – I’m not sure if he doesn’t know that Mechalis can’t self-right (its builder having to remove the pneumatics for the piston to make weight), or if he’s just putting on a good show. Regardless, I am certainly enjoying watching that heavyweight fly 5 feet in the air and bounce off the lexan. Eventually mechalis gets its front facing again, but pyro again squeaks under, but flips a tad too early, just pushing Mechalis back and causing NHS to do that funny thing brit flippers do when they run around rearing up their wedges for a bit. Pyro gets his bot level again, but NHS has managed from that to get to his side, and actually gets down the crusher... a bit. It mostly just tears off a gem or two as it slides down the angled surface before NHS escapes, gets under again, and flips mechalis a few more times. He almost gets mechalis beached on the side wall, but it slowly flops off, upside down. At this point pyro seems to realize that the claw does not do enough to right the crusher on its own, and he leaves it there to be counted out.

Your winner, by KO in 1:34, is Narcissistic Hot-Shot!

Sudden Death v America Offline:

Well. Syl has pulled out... after I'd already locked the bracket. Yay. So they're now a bye.

Fathom v IMMA SCATMAN:

A lot of this match is spent with Noah hoping that Riley would be dumb enough to run onto his wedge, which he clearly is not. Fathom is able to get to the side of scatman after enough aggressively, and clips a wheel early on. This gives the flavor of the rest of the confrontation. Fathom is almost flipped in the getaway, as it ramps over the side wedge of Scatman, but manages to stick the landing. Meanwhile, scatman is now circling around on one wheel: it might have a stronger weapon than fathom (though both are wildly ineffective), but it still has quite poor armor.

The problem now is the same problem that you get in a lot of fights where a robot with an ineffective weapon gets in one good hit: fathom can’t really follow itself up. Scatman is arguably doing a better job of protecting itself with one wheel, its movement unpredictable in combination with the lifter. Fathom, meanwhile, HAS to avoid the saw or risk death via flipping or grinding.

The long and the short of it means nothing entertaining happens for 3 minutes that greatly affects the course of the fight, so I’m just skipping to the JD :V

Aggression: 12-3 Fathom
Damage: 14-1 Fathom
Strategy: 7-6 IMMA SCATMAN
Total: 32-11
Your winner, by judge’s decision, is Fathom!

Week 2:

Featherweight:

Solifuge v Wyvern:

As the fight starts, they both go at each other, and Solifuge gets under. He goes for a clamp, however Wyvern immediately flips and frees itself. Wyvern wheelies a tad, and Solifuge gets under again, with the same thing happening. Occasionally, Wyvern gets a flip in.

After two minutes, it is clear that there are some problems with Solifuge’s weapon. One more flip and the weapon breaks. However, Wyvern still can't do much in terms of damage, and Solifuge seems to winning in terms of control, as it seems to have been the only robot to have even partially got control, as the match ends.

Damage: 10-5 Wyvern
Aggression: 9-6 Solifuge
Control: 8-7 Solifuge

Your winner by 23-22 JD is Wyvern!

Citr-Fw v Sling Shot:

Ya know I accidentally typed sling Shit in the title of this originally so that’s its name now. Also what the hell sure CITR baits Dylan into flipping early. Doesn’t matter, his front wedge is still wide and all angles so the grabbers just kinda slide off and it then beaches itself on his wedge. Now he’s kinda in the way of the weapon retracting so Dylan just shoves him around for a bit until the crusher eventually slides off and the flipper retracts. NOW the flip pain train starts.

In general it’s quite a good fight, with the slight caveat that Sling Shit is clearly dominating CITR the entire time. it’s certainly not for lack of trying on Pat’s end, but he certainly isn’t helped by the weapon he’s attempting to use. Or the fact that he’s really easily beachable on Sling Shit’s wedge. Another flip! that one almost tosses the boxy grabber out of the arena, and it ends up stranded on the side wall, all wheels off of the ground. Pat tries to free himself with the claws, but can’t do it before he’s counted out.

Your winner, by KO in 2:12, is Sling Shit!

Mr Halsworth v Phalanx:

Halsworth wins by FF?

Nuisance v Magica:

Magica appears to have had problems with it's tracks, so it won't be appearing in this fight. Meanwhile, V900 is eating some beans.

Heavyweight:

Loser's Bracket:

MiDAS v 02's Mentally Handicapped Cousin:

Ya so I could write a long winded result or y’all can take a wild guess at what happens when a (functional) hinged wedge goes up against a static 4WD bot.

Aggression: 10-5 MiDAS
Damage: 14-1 MiDAS
Control: 12-3 MiDAS

Your winner by a lot is MiDAS

America Offline v IMMA SCATMAN:

And AOL seems to have permanently died.

Winner's Bracket:

Meanstreak II v Aphelion:

So the wedge advantage is about 70/30 Meanstreak here overall, since he can really leverage his speed advantage to get under more often than not. He does find the whole chaining hits to be a problem though, since he is using a spinner that does run out of spin every few hits. Aphelion always eventually gets back up. When aphelion gets under, the results are far more spectacular. Meanstreak, with its low torque, can’t reverse before aphelion gets proper under and launches it well across the arena every time. It’s not really enough to let him turn things in his favor though.

Aggression: 10-5 Meanstreak
Damage: 8-7 Aphelion
Control: 9-6 Meanstreak
Your winner, in a 26-19 decision, is meanstreak!

Food Grade Plutonium v Trident:

Attackfrog gets his lifter prong/fork/trident spike under Food Grade Plutonium, lifts it, the crowd goes wild, match is called right there, first place, you can end the tournament right now because there has never been a better lift in the history of robot combat. It just got right in there, and that lift was so smooth, like a buttered baby's bottom.

Except no, FGP then gets under, and lifts and clamps, and parades Trident around for a while, before being told to put him down. Trident then goes and tries to flank, however FGP follows and presses down, thus getting under again.

This happens a few times, and then the match ends.

Damage: 8-7 Trident
Aggression: 8-7 Food Grade Plutonium
Control: 15-0 Food Grade Plutonium

Your winner by 30-15 JD is Food Grade Plutonium!

Amon v NHS Mk3:

Pyro seems to have privatised his robot preparation, uh?

Sudden Death v Fathom:

Hilariously, the shitty saw rack can actually damage Fathom. The real question is, can Wolf get it into play? Fathom’s definitely trying to avoid that sort of scenario, but SD’s wide wheelbase is really helping it here, letting the slower robot keep up. That being said, SD’s not really... doing anything, since he can’t engage with the faster robot. So uh, this literally goes on for like, half the fight. It could technically go on for the whole thing, but that’s boring so Sudden death eventually manages to get in and actually wedge fathom for a moment. He can’t get the arm around quick enough, though, so we’re back to this fuckfest. Until it ends. Kill me.

Aggression: 8-7 Fathom
Damage: 15-0 Sudden Death
Strategy: no
Your winner, in a 22-8 decision, is Sudden Death!

RPs due January 28th at UK midnight, but eh, you can have some leeway.

Week 3:

Featherweight:

Loser's Bracket:

Solifuge v Citr-Fw:

Yeah you’re not getting around a bot of equal speed. CiTR begins trying to get around to the side of Solifuge, who just takes it as an opportunity to get under it from the side of the boxy clawbot, and take it to P O U N D T O W N. And by P O U N D T O W N I mean he danced around with CiTR in his jaws in a manner that would have been significantly more effective had he not been doing it with a full body lifter. Solifuge eventually overbalances, and the two bots end up balanced by the back left side of CiTR and Solifuge’s lifting arms, and when HFL gets his bot back into a useable position the pin timer’s up and he lets CiTR go.

Pat’s pretty damned set on getting that side grab though, and goes right back to it. similar results. Ad infinitum or until the buzzer bell goes off. HFL never does get that perfect tilt onto the rear :P

Aggression: 8-7 Solifuge
Damage: I ain’t putting a score here if no one got hurt
Strategy: 9-6 Solifuge

Your winner, in a 17-13 decision, is Solifuge!

Magica v Talons Out:

This match goes all the way (such is a tournament without damaging weapons), with Magica generally being confusing, and managing to get in a few chain flips as a result, however Talons Out spends most of the match grabbing and lifting, not managing a KO, but managing to be definitely in control.

Aggression: 8-7 Talons Out
Damage: 8-7 Magica
Strategy: 9-6 Talons Out

Your winner, in a 24-21 decision, is Talons Out!

Winner's Bracket:

Wyvern v Sling Shot:

Sling Shot gets round a load, gets in flips, and generally uses its better control to flank. Obviously the big flip happens eventually, but not often enough for serious damage to be dealt. Generally Sling Shot on top.

Aggression: 8-7 Sling Shot
Damage: 8-7 Wyvern
Strategy: 9-6 Sling Shot

Your winner, in a 24-21 decision, is Sling Shot!

Mr Halsworth v Nuisance:

The “normal drum” is not rendered, so as far as I’m concerned it doesn’t exist. Also yeah sorry I’m real out of it and don’t want to write but these results are hella late so you’re getting the low quality version, which is that the majority of the match sees halsworth bullied the fuck around by the robot that has both a better wedge and thrice the torque. That’s not to say mole doesn’t do his fair share of shoving about, but V900’s able to pull his speed and torque to his advantage overall in the match with the help of his wedge.

Aggression: 8-7 Nuisance
Damage: 8-7 Mr Halsworth
Strategy: I hate the strategy category why hasn’t everyone renamed this to control yet jesus neither strategy was better or worse than the other here but I guess Nuisance 8-7

Your winner, in a split decision, is Nuisance!

Heavyweight:

Loser's Bracket:

Fathom v Permafrost:

Fathom plays the entire match running away from permafrost’s wedge and doesn’t have the speed to attack him from the front. Eventually permafrost gets under for long enough to one hit Fathom.

Permafrost wins by KO in 1:22

NHS Mk3 v MiDAS:

MiDAS can press down, and is generally just more control oriented. Therefore it spends most of the match getting under, lifting and axing. which obviously does no real damage, but it does help with the inevitable JD. NHS gets a few flips in, but it's obvious who won this match.

Aggression: 9-6 MiDAS
Damage: 10-5 MiDAS
Strategy: 9-6 MiDAS

MiDAS wins 28-17!

Trident v Mechalis:

This match starts pretty well for Trident. Trident goes out and manages to angle in, lift and pin. Trident is generally in control for the first minute or two.

Then Mechalis gets under, (when the inevitable mistake happens, you can't drive perfectly for 3 minutes) and Trident can't drive with it's front two wheels off the ground. Mechalis then gets a nice bite at the front-right wheel, which fucks up Trident's drive. He is then forced to let Trident go, however it's not doing any angling in now.

Mechalis then gets under a few more times, and manages to get a few bites on the body, eventually managing to hit something important near the end of the match.

Mechalis wins by KO at 2:34!

Aphelion v IMMA SCATMAN:

Ya so this is mostly just a giant wedge war that aphelion wins, especially since he’s able to avoid getting damaged by Scatman’s weapon by doing the whole flipping into it thing. Scatman seems to slow a bit from the flips, but aphelion also runs out of juice around the last minute, so we go to a JD

Aggression: 9-6 Aphelion
Damage: 8-7 Aphelion
Strategy: 8-7 Aphelion

Your winner, in a 25-20 decision, is Aphelion!

Winner's Bracket:

Meanstreak II v Food Grade Plutonium:

(still thinking about it)

Amon v Sudden Death:

There’s a lot of useless flailing in this matchup – sudden death gets under to start, but has some trouble getting the saw into play where he wants it since he angled in – the dustpan is in the way of his saw arm. meanwhile, amon is stuck on the wedge, so at least there’s that for him. Wolf hallucinates hazards in the robogames arena and shoves amon into a corner. Eventually he gets his opponent into a position where the saws can actually connect, but by then there’s only a bit more left on the pin timer so the saws don’t really get to do anything. The second time they approach each other, pat almost manages to juke wolf before he ends up back on the wedge. More of the same though since he’s at an angle, and this time Amon eventually escapes.
This goes on for a while until Amon is finally able to get under about 2 minutes into the match, juking Wolf’s attempts to angle in with his thin wedgelet thing. Without much ground clearance, this beaches Sudden Death pretty much immediately, and Amon eventually gets him up against a wall, and crushes straight through the sawbot, bending the saw rack as it goes. The arm of Sudden death seems completely dead when it’s released, and it’s listing to the left, but it is still going, and it manages to get a few more good pushes in on Amon before time is up – but was it enough to make up for the damage?

Aggression: 11-4 Sudden Death
Damage: 13-2 Amon
Strategy: 8-7 Sudden Death
Total: 24-21

Your winner, by judge’s decision, is Amon!

RPs due February 11th at UK midnight, but eh, you can have some leeway.
