See Syl, no creativity!
You there! Do you enjoy indulging in robotic combat? Do you like interesting, wacky designs? Do you get annoyed when the professionals turn up with bagfuls of kinetic energy, and turn your robot into a pile of scrap? Are you sick and tired of having to build thick wedges to survive? Well, do we have a tournament for you...

THE GENTLEMAN'S CLUB!
Ladies also accepted.

That's right! In this tournament, all kinetic energy weapons are banned, meaning you have to inflict damage (if you choose to at all) via more creative means than making a large chunk of metal travel at silly speeds. Have fun!

Arena, signups and writers

1) There will be 2 weight-classes: Featherweight, and Heavyweight. Both will be subject to Sportsman rules. (I'll get back to those later)
2) The arena will be the Robogames arena. Yes, that's massive for the Featherweights.
3) I need some writers! Here is the list:

  • mole55
PM me, say in your signup, or message me on Discord if you are willing to write.

Role-Play Rules

1) You’ll be expected to follow proper role-play etiquette. You are absolutely not allowed to directly reference your opponent’s RP, whether in your reply RP or by bringing it up in the discussion thread. Senior staff alone will determine if a violation has occurred. Furthermore, arrogance and mockery will not be tolerated in your RPs or anywhere else. Also, it’ll just make people hate you, so don’t do it, okay?

2) Excessive public complaining will get you suspended from the tournament for one week, with all of your matches being declared forfeits and an automatic 0-2 record. You’re allowed to ask why you lost, of course, but if it crosses a line that senior staff alone will determine, the above consequences will apply.

3) Staff discretion also extends to anything considered unnecessary drama. We have better things to do than babysit, and you have better things to do than be a pain in the ass. As with public complaining, it will result in a one-week suspension and winless record.

4) Be concise and specific in your RPs and please use proper spelling and grammar. However, this is not university, and detailed stat breakdowns are unnecessary unless they directly tie into your strategy. We strongly encourage you not to write a novel for your RP. You risk losing the writer’s attention and having him or her miss something. To this end, there will be a 300 word RP limit in the group stages. This will be upped when we get to the playoffs, and during the playoffs. Exceed it at your peril.

5) Fight cards will be posted on Sundays along with results, and you will have six days (until the next Saturday) to post your RPs. If the fight card is late for whatever reason, RPs will still be due at the same time. In the case of extreme lateness, the next round of the tournament may be delayed for one week.

6) RP Deadlines are set in stone, to the minute. If you are one minute late, you’re late. No exceptions. While we understand that people have lives and there are some very valid reasons for being late, we don’t have a crystal ball and it’s often impossible to separate truth from fabrication. If you put things into perspective, you have an entire week to write a handful of paragraphs, so it really isn’t hard to do. We don’t want anybody benefiting from submitting late, so the rules are the rules. If you know well ahead of time that you won’t be able to make your deadline, either find someone to ghostwrite for you or ask for an extension at least two days in advance.

7) If your robot has modular weapons or armour systems that have the potential to significantly alter yours or your next opponent's tactics during your upcoming match, you will be expected to notify him or her of your configuration at least two days before RPs are due either by including your configuration at the top of the RP thread, through discord, or by private messaging him or her. Failure to do so will result in a forfeit loss if your opponent and staff believe that it is warranted.

Stat System

1) We will utilize the standard ARC system, with 30 points divided between Speed, Traction, Torque, Armour, and Weapon. For a more detailed explanation, see here:

http://s10.zetaboards.com/Drowning_City_Forums/topic/9024643/1/#new

2) However, we will also be using these amendments:

a. The CBC1 rules regarding saws, drills, grinding drums, and other extended contact weapons will return. Circular saws and drills must be mounted on some form of articulating attachment and will automatically take (armour value) x 2 seconds to pierce an opposing robot's armour if held against it. Every point put into a sawblade weapon reduces the piercing time by one second and enables it to deal 0.5 more points of damage. For example, a six power sawblade against 10 armour would take fourteen seconds to pierce and would deal three corner damage, while a ten power sawblade against 7 armour would take 4 seconds (similar to Red Devil vs. Witch Doctor) and deal five corner damage.

b. The MonkeyWrench multibot rules will be in effect. As a result, multibots are allowed (up to a maximum of 6 total robots). Your main bot starts with 30 points (or 34 for walkers) and has to give up 1 point to create a minibot/multibot. In return, this new bot will receive 4 stat points. Your main bot's total stat points must be equal to or greater than any other secondary bot created from those stat points. An example would be having 3 bots: a secondary bot would be (5 main bot points * 4 stat points = 20 usable points), another secondary bot would be (5 * 4 = 20), and the main bot would be (30 – 5 – 5 = 20). All 3 robots will have 20 stat points. Another example would be: secondary bot (3 * 4 = 12), secondary bot ( 5 * 4 = 20), main bot (30 – 3 – 5 = 22).

c. For every point of speed over 8 invested in a robot, traction will receive a -1 penalty. This means that a robot with spd/tra of 10/9 will function as a 10/7. This is to represent the difficulty of controlling a high speed robot and means that you may not argue that point in an RP against a robot, since it'll already be represented in the stats.

d. The speed at which a robot pushes will be determined by the mid-point between speed and torque, rounded to the nearest half (same as effective ramming power). In the event of this being equal between two robots, the one with the higher torque stat will be able to push its opponent. For example, a robot with spd/tor 8/2 will push at 5 speed. A robot with spd/tor 6/4 will also push at 5 speed, but will be able to slowly out-push its opponent (and also accelerate to maximum pushing speed more quickly).

3) Walkers, slitherers, and hopping robots will be given 34 points to work with. However, they will be limited to a maximum speed of 6 and a maximum torque of 3. Further, their self-damage scale will be two points more aggressive than the standard one, meaning that a robot with a 3 point weapon:armour gap will start to wear down its weapon by the end of the match, a 4 point weapon:armour gap will result in the weapon failing after five uses, and a five point gap will result in a self-KO after five uses. Shufflers will receive 32 points, and have their self-damage scale made one point more aggressive. Tracked robots will receive no bonus, though they will be eligible for a +4 traction bonus to be applied only in the case of knockback. Don't try any bullshit. We don't need another melty-FBS scenario.

4) Robots are allowed to have up to four working weapon attachments at a time and must start with a weapon stat of at least 2. Split weapon stats will be calculated as follows:

a. 2 weapons: each weapon receives 2/3 of the total stat, rounded to the closest whole number, or up if it falls halfway between (e.g. 11 weapon power becomes 7.33 for each, which is rounded down to 7).

b. 3 weapons: each weapon receives 1/2 of the total stat, rounded to the nearest whole number, or up if it falls halfway between (e.g. 15 weapon power becomes 7.5 for each, which is rounded up to 8).

c. 4 weapons: each weapon receives 1/3 of the total stat, rounded to the nearest whole number, or up if it falls halfway between (e.g. 14 weapon power becomes 4.67 for each, which is rounded up to 5).

5) Novel Weapon Types:

a. Smart thwacks, known as 'melty-brain' spinners, are outright banned. We do not need your kinetic energy here.

b. Flamethrowers will be capped at five points and function on the same damage scale as saws and drills. However, they will not apply corner damage.

6) Weapon armour allotments are the same as usual, and require the weapon in question to possess at least 5 weapon power in order to be eligible. Especially large weapons that account for over 1/3 of the robot's surface area may choose to apply the bonus to only a portion of their weapon so as to not lose out on it entirely.

7) Robots will be limited to four configurations. They may choose to designate a primary configuration which will receive 30 points while all secondary configurations will receive 28. Alternatively, if they do not designate one, all configurations will have 29 points.

Sportsman:

Now for the big changes:

Spinners and hammers are limited to 8 weapon power. This doesn't cover slower overhead or spinning weapons, such as grinding discs, saws, or crushers.

Any device capable of removing an opponent's wheels from the arena floor must be integral to an active weapon. In other words, a wedge-shaped robot where the wedge is a lifter is okay, as is a dustpan on a sawbot which has the purpose of holding the victim in place while the saw causes damage. On the other hand, you can't have a back wedge which has the sole function of pushing an opponent around. SMALL forks, outriggers, or wedge-shaped skids are also acceptable provided they are not capable of removing the drive wheels of a reasonable opponent from the arena floor (if you design a robot with a 1mm ground clearance and get high-centered on someone's outriggers, that's your own fault).

The purpose of the Sportsman class is to promote creative designs which would be non-feasible in "open" weight classes. Attempts to skirt the spirit of the class (e.g. building a pushybot with a useless 1 power weapon like Tornado did in Series 7 of Robot Wars) will result in disqualification.

I MAY GRANT A WAIVER IF YOUR ROBOT FITS THE SPIRIT OF UNUSUAL DESIGNS, IF NOT THE RULES. EITHER PM ME OR MESSAGE ME ON DISCORD IF YOU WANT A WAIVER

The main configuration is 2WD with a 360 lifter/clamp: 9 speed / 9 traction / 3 torque / 4 weapon (3/3) / 5 armour

Posted Image

It's restatted for this tournament because why not and the secondary config is not available. I really don't think this bot needs anymore explanation, but have some anyways: All the shit you'd expect to be removable is removable. The symbol used is the two-headed Hapsburg eagle. The quote is Machiavelli. The name is from the song linked in the subtitle above. The actual title links to the album. Click it. It shows the optional wedge teeth and hammer blocker, which exist. 100%.

Yes, the 'rocket boosters' are removable (the 'flames' are made of white light, fans, and sheer fabric, anyways).

Yes, its weapon and the weapon supports get weapon armour. Yes, it'll have a drum that can actually do damage if I enter it in another event.

Yes, it's memestreak and it's back. No, it's not a FW. It's a HW this time.

Solifuge is a full-body clamp. Two lifting arms on either side of the chassis press downward, tilting the entire chassis backward with sufficient speed and power to reverse-suplex an opponent, and a curved claw powered by a leadscrew actuator bites down on them. The clamp mechanism prioritizes speed over power, only biting hard enough to hold opponents in place. However, the mechanism is non-backdrivable and very strong, making it very difficult for opponents to knock themselves free. It can self-right by closing the clamp and lifting the arms all the way, as well as using torque reaction with its powerful drivetrain.

Clamp and arms fully raised
Lifting range. Arms can move slightly farther than this, but this will flip the robot.
Self-righting.

Stats:
Speed: 6
Traction: 5
Torque: 2
Weapon: 7
Armor: 10

Same old front-hinged flipper, but now faster at 17 MPH and more controllable due to changes in weight distribution. The armor is thinner due to the lack of spinners, and the flipper's power has been further reduced. It still has a spring-loaded "tail" to help prevent wheelies, and still has a secondary solenoid valve which can shut off flow from one of the robot's two accumulator tanks. This allows the flipper to be fired at greatly reduced power, which both saves gas when self-righting and prevents the robot from going too far and landing on its back again (and not having to attempt to self-right multiple times saves even more gas and possibly the match). As an added bonus, this means that when Aphelion self-rights it takes less time for the accumulators to refill. Oh, and the exhaust system now operates an airhorn, sized for the perfect "MLG" pitch.

The flipper may be weaker, but it can still toss an opponent 4-5 feet in the air, and with a running start is capable of HUGE horizontal distances. With a 4 ft flip height and a 60 degree launch angle relative to the robot, it can throw a robot over a 3 ft wall from about 7 feet away with a standing start, 12 feet away with a 5 MPH start, and 18 feet away with a 10 MPH start. Basically, this lets it OOTA opponents from most of the Robogames arena.

Overhead Tentomushi-style trapper with pontoon wedges on the side and a big plastic shell to eat up damage. Despite the limited movement in the pictures, the arm holding the trapper can rotate up to 200 degrees backwards, and has a small wedge on the front to let it operate as a lifter. Also has an alternate dustpan setup (shown in the third pic). 6 torque too because lol why not :dirk:

Yep, it's a torque reaction chainsaw. The dustpan is what moves. Trying to "lift" the opponent with the pressing wedge will cause the chainsaw to rotate 175 degrees from its base position in the leftmost pic onto the opponent. The chainsaw is electrically-driven and can be turned on and off at any time so I don't scratch up the floor.

2WD dumb thwack with a slightly hinged frontal plow. Goes about 5 degrees either way, so the wedge can stay on the ground, but can't fold up under the bot. Cambered wheels for extra stability. Weakly invertible, i.e. it can still drive about freely and thwack but the wedge will be upside down.

Golden 6WD machine with an electric axe that can strike twice a second, dual lifting arms that operate as one, and removable hinged skirts. Why are they removable? To save enough weight so I can swap the separate lifting arms for a single lifting plow! Because the weaponry still functions in the same manner, I don't believe this requires any points deduction. Wheels stick out the back to keep them on the ground when gotten underneath, same reason the skirts are angled as they are. Can self-right using the axe, lifters (with some reversing), or both at once.

The Bot-O-Rama sportsman champ is back to assert dominance. It's a 2wd flywheel-flipper that uses a spinning drum inside the robot to generate the force needed to flip, similar to real-life robot Magneato. Can self-right, obviously.

A video that demonstrates the flipping mechanism can be found below:

2WD crusher with a big fuck-off wedge at the front. Claw has enough power to right the robot if it gets stuck.
Speed: 6
Weapon: 11
Armor: 7 (+2 wedge)

Well okay then.

A three-wheel drive lifter. The rear wheel can turn 360 degrees, so it basically drives like a forklift, or as it would if it were only 2WD, but with more traction and stability. Can't really self-right, but it can drive upside down no problem.

8 Speed // 8 Traction // 3 Torque // 7 Armor // 4 Weapon

Featherweight: ???

Who said Tornado couldn't be an effective design? 4WD pushy box with a choice of multiple hinged wedgelets on the front and a grinding drum, an invertible punching bar, and a surprise weapon: a front flipping scoop paired with a rear 4ft magnetic bar ala Drop Zone and Black Ice. It can basically be used as a personal wall to protect against frontal attacks and as an annoyance for others. Have fun rushing me head on when there's a bigass stick in your way. Even if it doesn't stick, it's still pretty fun to play around with :P

Speed: 7
Traction: 7
Weapon: 4 (3 grinding drum/3 punching bar/2 flipper, 1 magnet dropper.
Torque: 4
Armor: 8

2WD overhead...sawbot I guess :V. It's got an overhead arm with a big ass sawrack to bring down on the opponent. Anything within range will basically be cut to shreds by the multiple sawblades. Robot McNuggets anyone? There's ground clearance in the back similar to apollo with the wheels slightly exposed. I can show a image for proof if needed.

Speed: 6
Traction: 5
Weapon: 8 (7 saws, 1 arm)
Armor: 7
Torque: 3

A Splinter-shaped control bot with an Mousetrap inspired overhead hammer/grabber. Please don't judge him for his looks, not everyone is born with a pretty face.
