Welcome to the R.O.B.O.T.S. Playoff Round! Here’s where the going gets big; where every match is a challenge, where ain’t nobody gonna FF! First, let’s meet your division winners! In the Featherweight class, we see two very different takes on the same general weapon idea. Representing the Vorpal Bunny Division, it’s Howler II! Boasting a perfect record, Howler II is a ridiculous vertical power-spinner, at its most successful when it hides in a corner and points one of its sides at an opponent, relying on its incredibly powerful weapon to win out against its opponent. Even able to take out Tenebris, the biggest “spinner killer” in its division, Howler II will certainly be a force to reckon with, but its matchups have also been rather limited. As it moves into more matches against non-spinners, can it prove itself? Representing the Torque Dirty 2 Me Division, it’s Mudcrab! Using geometry, layers of wedge, and a surprisingly decent drivetrain, Mudcrab has been able to pick up wins against almost every opponent, though it has shown chinks in the armor, losing to Firebird in its spinner configuration. We also have yet to see it face off against the division’s other 6-1 bot, Talons Out!, thanks to the clampbot’s failure to abide by tournament rules. As it faces more perfected stat assortments, designs and strategies, can Cha0sFerret continue to win with ingenuity? The Lightweight Class brings in two different 2 wheel-drive designs as division leaders. Representing the Pyrite division, it’s Tidal Wave! It really is amazing what one can do when you stick a big ‘ol spinny hurty vertical thingie on a well designed 2WD chassis, especially when you throw on some anti-wedge skids to boot. Tidal Wave’s only loss so far is in the playoffs – but the earliest they could face off is in the finals, and there are no other vertical spinners for it to worry about – will it continue to dominate? Representing The Debilitator Division, it’s Slither! Hey look, you get to represent the division named after your bot (though this would have happened no matter which division you were in ). Slither has not lost. Once. It’s beaten two vertical spinners – a design against which clamps and lifters struggle – as well as plenty of fast wedges and a horizontal spinner. but how will it fare against the hammers of the Pyrite division? The Middleweight division leaders are very different. Like, I actually can’t find much of a commonality here, except that their drivers take this pretty damned seriously. Representing the Depth Charge Division, it’s Black Dog! Black Dog took a salt-inducing loss to Safe Space, but has left its division otherwise unscathed – no small task with the likes of Corporate Interests and The No Patrol running around, both designed with countering verts in mind. Its first match is up against another robot that could go with a vertical spinner – will lightning strike twice? Representing the Crash Blossom division, it’s Axtinguisher! This bot took advantage of the weight bonus to make its weapon even cooler than it already was, sticking a flamethrower in the hammer without taking a penalty to functional stats. Pushing its way to the top on the sheer weight of its knockout victories (a full 2/3 of its wins), Axtinguisher is certainly able to end matches decisively. Can it continue against even more vertical spinners and tough armored bots? Heavyweight’s kinda the brick weightclass, and its champions fit the bill. Representing The Arbiter Division, it’s REX! This monstrosity was born of the removal of walker speed limits, and has used its extra stats and massive jaws to bully its way to the playoffs, not taking a single loss along the way. With only two damage dealers left in the class, it won’t have to worry about protecting its weaker body armor too much – but it lacks the KO potential many of its opponents will have. Representing the Broken Ghost Division, it’s Chimera V! Riding on the back of some good strategy and a whole lotta luck, this robot’s only loss was in a functional FF, managing to defeat a number of other strong designs on the way to the top. But, like other flippers, Chimera lacks an effective way to press, potentially leaving it at a disadvantage against lifters. Is the tradeoff of being able to OOTA worth it? Filling out the Featherweight competitors are Tenebris (Ice Cubed Robotics), Talons Out! (Tartarus Robotics), Guleh (Angry Goat Robotics), Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Blood Gulch Robotics), Noothgrush (Killjoy Syndicate) and Firebird (Team Instant Regret). This gives us, in total, 3.5 vertical spinners, 1.5 horizontal spinners, a clamp, a flipper, and a swiss-army bot. In Lightweight, we also have Backstab 2.5 (Alpha Robotics), Reinhardt (Angry Goat Robotics), Elrathia (The Monsterworks), Spike (Team Blood Gulch), Sleipnir (north-west Sheds), and Dead on Arrival (Ice Cubed Robotics). This gives us, in total, 2 vertical spinners, 2 hammers, 1 horizontal spinner, 2 wedges, and 1 lifter/clamp. For Middleweight, we have, in addition to the leaders, Corporate Interests (Chaotic Robotics), PnATO (Team Instant Regret), Vovoka (Alpha Robotics), Safe Space (The Monsterworks), Sarge (Team Blood Gulch), and Glitch (Angry Goat Robotics). This gives us 2 vertical spinners, 2 wedges, a lifter, an axe, a flipper, and a swiss army bot. Finally, our additional Heavyweights are Hati & Skoll (Team Instant Regret), Coup de Grace (Alpha Robotics), Hellhound IV (Tartarus Robotics), Redemption Denied (Team Blood Gulch), The Four Wheeled, Six Toothed, Driving Purple Robot Eater (Aquatic Robotics), and Terminal Velocity Classic (Ice Cubed Robotics), Giving us 1 Horizontal Spinner, 3 lifters, 1 hammer and 3 flippers. How have the teams done overall, though? Undefeated Robots: 3 (Howler II/Slither/REX) One Robot teams which failed to qualify for the playoffs: 0 Teams will all robots through to the playoffs: 7 Full sized teams with all robots qualifying for the playoffs: 4 (The Monsterworks/Angry Goat Robotics/Ice Cubed Robotics/Team Blood Gulch) People with a Worse winning percentage than Peskius: 1 (and he also FFed everything :V ) Times a crusher has won a match in this tournament (using its crusher configuration): 1, still Lowest amount of wins needed to qualify for the playoffs: 3 (achieved by Dead on Arrival and Sleipnir) Number of divisions without a robot with 3 wins: 1 (Vorpal Bunny Division) Most KOs: 5 (Howler II) 0 win robots: 3 (Copperhead/Triple B/The Police Terror) Largest Tiebreaker: 4 (Dead on arrival/Endless Clowns/Savage/Disgruntled Ceiling fan) 86% - Chaotic Robotics: 12-2 (6-1/6-1) – Full Team in Playoffs Continuing his reign of terror, Cha0sferret and Madman ended up in close competition for their two divisions – such close competition that it came down to a tiebreaker both times, which the teams split; while Mudcrab leads its division out of Talons Out!’s controversial forfeit, Corporate Interest’s one loss came at the hands (drums?) of Black Dog. Mudcrab’s first match against Pennywise should be an interesting one, pitting together the two weird featherweight spinners, while Corporate interests will have to deal with Vovoka, an opponent whose wedge should usually be better than CI’s. 82% - The Monsterworks: 23-5 (7-0/4-3/5-2/7-0) – Full Team in Playoffs Carrying two undefeated robots, The Monsterworks is in great position to succeed, and has suspiciously stopped calling Elrathia a “failed design” as of late (possibly to avoid being berated by the people who actually have losing records :V ). Howler vs Firebird seems to be in Howler’s corner – it seems like the only reasonable weapon for Firebird to use would be the spinner, and we saw how well that went for TDI. Elrathia vs Backstab pits a hammer against a more anti-spinner sort of design; a culture clash of sorts. Safe Space vs PnATO could end up being a lesson in body armor for the wacky cluster – or could be one of out-manuevering a robot with modest speed and no wedge-escaping capabilities. REX vs Purple might just end up being a stomp as the walking brick continues its steamroll. 71% - Angry Goat robotics: 20-8 (5-2/5-2/4-3/6-1) – Full Team in Playoffs Falling a bit since the mid-season roundup, Reinhardt, Guleh and Chimera all ran into robots able to defeat them (even if Chimera’s loss RP was perhaps somewhat low effort). Glitch climbed though, and managed to secure a playoff spot. Guleh gets to immediately go up against one of its most aggressive counters, Talons Out! in what is sure to be an interesting fight. Reinhardt vs Spike can hopefully (for me at least), go a bit better than the DCF fight, while Glitch gets the fun job of taking on Black Dog. Chimera vs Terminal Velocity seems to be this team’s safest fight, and even that’s far from a guarantee. 71% - Tartarus Robotics Group: 20-8 (6-1/3-4/6-1/5-2) – 3/4 Robots through to Playoffs It really seems as though Madman’s greatest opponent has been his personality and his wifi connection, and his tendency to openly criticize the staff doesn’t seem to have garnered him many allies in his valiant struggles against his wireless internet foes. Savage also had struggles, never able to find a consistent way to deal with vertical spinners or other hammers. That being said, his three robots through seem to be in pretty good shape, as already mentioned for Black Dog and Talons Out!. Hellhound though, must face a hammer while having low body armor itself – will hammers prove again to be the Madman’s bane? 68% - Ice Cubed Robotics: 19-9 (6-1/3-4/6-1/4-3) – Full Team through to Playoffs Maintaining essentially the exact same winning percentage since the mid-week, GF93 is apparently quite consistent. He also somehow managed to bring Dead on Arrival through to the playoffs despite multiple extremely flashy losses – since when it won, it won big, bringing in 2 KOs. Tenebris gets Noothgrush in the first round, and if it can’t win that fight why is it even here? As previously mentioned, Chimera vs TVC is likely to be an uphill battle – though also one GF could quickly turn in his favor. DoA vs Slither should be another interesting one. Axtinguisher faces a robot better optimized for a spinner than a hammer – though sarge’s wedge should beat the walker’s one. 64% - Team Instant Regret: 18-10 (4-3/3-4/6-1/5-2) – 3/4 Robots through to the Playoffs The stories of Firebird and Disgruntled Ceiling fan are ones of two robots moving in different directions throughout the event – Firebird starting weak and getting back in in the last spot, DCF with a relatively strong start, hopes dashed by a surprising loss to Endless Clowns in the final week, its inability to KO a robot making it lose in the tiebreakers. As previously mentioned, Firebird has a hard fight ahead, while PnATO has one that will be a head-scratcher either way it goes. Hati & Skoll vs Redemption denied seems like a fight that could easily go the way of the cluster with some good strategy, though RD’s flipper could prove to be their demise 61% - Blood Gulch Robotics: 17-11 (4-3/4-3/4-3/5-2) – Full team through to Playoffs NWOWWE managed to pull all of his robots through, despite his overall poor record – spreading out the love well. This consistency also comes from, for the most part, tried-and-true designs (except the oddball clown in featherweight, but we don’t address it directly for fear it might try to address us back), but hides some serious struggles on the part of Spike against its weapon armor. As previously mentioned, all of his matches could easily go either way. 61% - Alpha Robotics: 17-11 (1-6/5-2/6-1/5-2) – 3/4 Robots through to the Playoffs Saddled with a robot that was given a bit of a raw deal, Alpha robotics has been otherwise stellar. Though unable to lead any division, none of his heavier three were ever in much danger of not making it through. As previously mentioned, Backstab has a tough matchup ahead of it, while both Vovoka and Coup de Grace seem to be in a good position if RPed for with care. 57% - Aquatic Robotics 4-3 (4-3) – Full Team through to Playoffs (all one of them :V ) Attackfrog still has yet to disappoint, moving through with a modest record. Unfortunately this does mean he now has to fight REX, so uh, good luck? 57% - Killjoy Syndicate: 4-3 (4-3) – All Robot through to Playoffs Huh, she hasn’t lost a fight since I wrote the mid-event thing, which really vaulted her up. That being said, her first match is against the unabashed spinner killer Tenebris, so this last gasp might just be it unless she can really pull something out of her ass. 57% - Team 57: 8-6 (6-1/2-5) – 1/2 of the team through to Playoffs You have no idea how happy his winning percentage makes me. Ending up with a stellar division leader, we’re just all going to ignore Blue Zenith, ok :V . Tidal wave seems to be the right sort of build to take down Sleipnir, though perhaps the speed demon can take it to the full three and win if it can stay upright. 50% - Team Ignition: 14-14 (2-5/7-0/3-4/2-5) – 1/4 of team through to Playoffs Same record as mid-week, and man is Slither pulling a lot of weight. Even the No Patrol couldn’t make it through – something that definitely surprised me. Salamandra seemed to mostly struggle from having no body armor against a bunch of vertical spinners and fast horizontal spinners, though throwing a match it could have won probably didn’t help either. Malacoda never really found a way to overcome its poor traction against so many flippers, able to punish his lack of invertability rather quickly. Looking forewards, slither’s next match is certainly winnable – and with lightweight championships in the last 3 major tournaments for Team Ignition, a deep run feels pretty much guaranteed. 36% - Team British Robotics: 10-18 (2-5/3-4/2-5/3-4) – No Robots through Honestly this team was rather disappointing – both Shuriken and Ricochet made it to the cusp of the playoffs; and Shuriken forfeiting its deciding match against Sleipnir was fuckin’ heartbreaking. And it was really just that – some odd strategies, some weird forfeits; that’s all that TBR had between him and 3-4 robots making it through. 33% - Team Stealth: 7-14 (3-4/2-5/2-5) – No Robots through Shaba managed to pull through a few wins in her final weeks, most notable of which being her victory against DCF that brought Endless Clowns into a 4-way tiebreaker for the final spot in the Pyrite Division. Unfortunately, exploitable flaws in designs and stats made her other two bots fall through the cracks. 32% - Team Cardboard Pony: 9-19 (1-6/3-4/2-5/3-4) – No Robots Through Another team that was ever so close in two divisions, Patrickrowberry is on the edge of contention, able to pick up a few surprise wins with the unusual To Fry and bold Smack Down. The Devil Inside and Jaws continued to have their easily exploited flaws easily exploited, however, and none of his robots had the wins they needed to break tiebreakers or qualify fully of their own volition 32% - Team Foxtrot Uniform: 9-19 (3-4/1-6/3-4/2-5) – No Robots through We’re really in so close yet so far territory here :V . Sylandro really started to pick it up in the later weeks with better strategies (though you’re still a bit predictable ), but it wasn’t quite enough to carry his flagship waifubot or Hot Jalapeño through to the playoffs. 21% - North-West Sheds: 6-22 (2-5/3-4/0-7/1-6) – 1/4 Robots through to Playoffs still with the dubious honor of the only non-ffing 0 win bot, Mole did manage to pull through to the playoffs, at the very least. Sleipnir may be an underdog, but it won its 3-way tiebreaker completely fair and square – 2 of his 3 wins were against those with whom he tied. Sleipnir is an independent wedgebot who don’t need no KOs :V . Its first match is another underdog scenario, but it’s certainly not un-winnable. 19% - Team Pesky Robotechnics: 4-17 (2-5/1-6/1-6) – No Robots through FF team 7% - Team Fox: 2-26(1-6/1-6/0-7/0-7) FF team |

Oh wow, all my bots got into the Playoffs? Fantastic, I seriously wasn't expecting that! Got a pretty decent selection of opponents to fight this week, but hopefully I can win most of them; it could even be a chance to turn around Dead On Arrival's fortunes after the previous tough losses it's had. EDIT: Brilliant to see Tenebris win the Featherweight rumble as well! DOA surviving the Lightweight one was good as well (though I probably could have been more aggressive. ), but that Middleweight one... damn. Axtinguisher got fucking annihilated.

The Heavyweight rumble was very good as well actually! Lots of action, Terminal Velocity Classic put on a good show and scored plenty of kills along the way. Although, as a legitimate question rather than my usual ranting; how did Coup de Grace win the decision? Without trying to be a sore loser about it at all, the main things it appeared to do were crippling Death Metal and Smackdown, versus Terminal Velocity Classic OOTAing Blue Zenith, Death Metal and Purple Robot Eater, KOing Malacoda, and finishing off Smackdown. So essentially, two kills (CDG) versus five (TVC). I assume it's aggression and/or damage and generally being more in the fray throughout that won it for Coup de Grace, but I'm not sure. |
