...huh. Honestly, I don't know if I would've entered if I had known that you could be FFed for doing RPs over 500 characters long. To be fair, I didn't actually know about the rule at the time I wrote the RP, but the limit isn't really long enough to do a decent one (at least in my opinion), and to me, it just overall comes off as punishing people for putting in the effort they do for those kinds of detailed strategies. |

It sucks that you suffered FF losses, dude, and I feel for you, but it was pretty clearly stated in the signups and discussed widely. Personally, I was a bit iffy on it, but it makes the writers' and participants jobs easier, ultimately, and kills the recent trend of absurdly long RPs dedicated as much to trashing your opponent's design as to an actual strategy. I've managed to write halfway decent RPs with it and I didn't kill basically an entire day doing so. It also has the added benefit of making RPing a bit less daunting for rookies. I think we at least owe it to ourselves as a community to give this a shot. |

Just to make it clear, the limit is 500 characters, not 500 words. It's worth keeping that in mind. And while I initially thought the 500 character limit would be difficult to work with, it's actually not as bad as I'd expected. You've got enough space to put a reasonably rounded strategy down, as long as you don't waffle on with "here's why my idea is going to work and his plans are not" type of stuff, which is what I think it was designed to stop anyway. So in that sense it is working, it gives the writers an easier time, along with RP'ers as well. Plus without the attacking of opponents' designs and overly long explanations of everything, it means we can put some trust in the writers again, rather than going "but you forgot about this one specific detail that I mentioned one time in my Dickensian novel of a strategy". |

The rule wasn't meant to target you Alex. You're just a casualty of war. Everyone's RPs were getting really long in recent tournaments--to the point that it became a huge burden for writers to read them and factor them into their fights. The problem is that if a few people do super-long RPs, then everyone else feels compelled to do the same, otherwise what if the other guy said something doesn't work and I didn't counter it and I lose because I had a shorter RP? It becomes an arms race with no end. Most robots don't need long RPs. A few sentences will do. V'Ger is one of the more complicated robots in the tournament and look at its RP. 460 characters. Is it really missing anything? Trim out the pretty english and connecting phrases and stick to a list of tactics, and you can say a lot in 500 characters. |

I wanted to minimize the strain on writers as much as possible. We have 23 teams. That's 69 robots and 34 fights per week... that's a lot of fights and we have two less weight classes than CBC, so you can imagine why writers were burning out in that tournament! Now imagine writing 34 fights, and having to read a 1500 word RP for every single robot. Too much! |
