I was mostly talking about the shell spinners.

Weighing in on a few things here:

1) In a sense, I could see how it IS kinda weird/annoying that there are three snakes now. However, to me it's just whatever. If three people wanna have fun with snakes, then let 'em. One or two might carry on and be successful designs that compete regularly and competitively, but for the most part, they're showbots, and CBC is definitely a tournament that encourages some experimentation.

2) I agree with the sentiment that house bots shouldn't be insanely destructive. This isn't the chance to build your dream version of a bot and make it sooper dooper. House Bots that do 18 damage don't do anything to make fights better. They insert a wildcard that can end them. IMO, that's only really acceptable in the case of something like Silver Sonic because it should function more like a static buzzsaw hazard (though 18's a bit much). Please keep Housebot stats reasonable in the spirit of RW, guys.

3) Regarding Chronos:

"How do you even make it lean forward, given the huge gyroscopic forces it has to contend with? Also, it seems like the sphere would have very little yaw traction: how do you keep the counter-torque from spinning its own body?"

1) Making it lean forward manually isn't easy, since something revolving along the Z (yaw) axis is fundamentally stable, kind of like a spinning top. However, the four powered omni wheels mounted up-down on the inside of the main ring can push with enough sudden force to make it tilt. In terms of it leaning forward when it, I think that's pretty self-explanatory and experimentally verifiable. If you hit something (especially something with a small footprint) hard and well below its center of gravity, it will pitch forward violently.

2) in terms of 'yaw axis traction', it's important to note that Cronos is made up of three parts that are mechanically separate and not directly affixed to each other in any way. They're simply kept in constant contact by the design. The omniwheels mounted on the inner cage (the single heaviest component) inside the sphere are constantly fighting the battle to keep it from spinning. Also, the golden weapons mounting isn't directly attached to the sphere, It just rests on the outside on the ball bearings that line the inside of the two collars and the omniwheels on the inside of the mounting itself, so most of the KE generated by its spinning ring is dissipated through those means or actively fought by the powered omnis. I'm not saying that it's an easy system to build, It requires constant input from the balance sensors and dozens of micro-adjustments, but it IS workable.

Actually if you like I could tone that down a bit. I didn't really look to see what similar bots might be at and didn't know it was going to be so broken.

I should go 3-1 this week but it'll probably be something like 0-4 or 0-5.

It sucks going 0-5. You lose all 4 of your bot fights for the week and you also lose at life.

Quick question, would a house robot still get a walker bonus on top of the extra stats it gets? I've still to figure out a drive system for Clawstrophobia but thinking of making a walker to allow it to move sideways and to go full on art-bot.

Personally, I'm inclined to say no. Since it's a housebot and not a competitor, it isn't subject to any weight limit. You could go walker, though and still be quite effective.

Cool. Just curious. Might still make it a walker as I want it to move sideways so the crushers are always facing the contestants and my only other option would be mechanum wheels. Plus Mechadon-esque walkers always look cool.

All right, I've got a house robot.

He doesn't have a medical license, a medical degree, or even a code of ethics. What he does have is a 14" bonesaw and an unhealthy obsession with vivisection! Introducing:

Doctor Cadaver!

STATS:

Speed: 5
Traction: 5
Torque: 4
Armor: 8 (+6 house robot bonus)
Weapon: 18 (11 saw, 1 saw articulation, 3 clamp, 3 lifter)

Doctor Cadaver is a medical horror themed house robot. It weighs in at just over 360 kg (800 lbs). A pair of tracks propels it up to 10 MPH. Dr. Cadaver's primary weapon is a giant 14" diameter sawblade capable of cutting through metal and creating a giant shower of sparks against steel or titanium. The saw is articulated by a hydraulic cylinder, and two more synchronised cylinders power a pair of clamping jaws to restrain the patient before surgery. The entire operating table can lift up to 3 feet in the air, allowing Doctor Cadaver to do far more than just cut into a robot. He can lift them in the air and parade them around, do that and THEN cut them, throw them to the ground, and even spin them around and release the clamp to fling them across the arena. The rear has a car tire which acts as a bumper if a spinner gets too big for its britches. The good Doctor's head, made to resemble a medieval Plague Doctor's mask and hat, can look up and down and has a flexible mount allowing it to oscillate from side to side in response to shocks, and even deform downward without damage if a competitor manages to flip him over (he can't self-right, though). The eyes are actually arrays of blue-white LEDs behind layers of smoked polycarbonate, and provide an easily-visible glow.

You like? I tried to keep the sort of "post-industrial" style of the original Robot Wars house robots, although Red Devil and Sawblaze also provided inspiration.

So, Dr. Cadaver is pretty much the decider as to whether the sixth area should be island or Victorian themed. He honestly looks amazing. I think I'll set the arena either on a floating platform in the port area of Liverpool or in a Victorian-era insane asylum. Which do you guys like better?

The asylum concept seems fun, but jeez, that arena is TINY. 576 square feet is the size of the Motorama arena. It might be okay with just the competitors, but with two house robots in there as well, and blocking the path across the arena center instead of just the corners, it'll just be a pain in the ass.

IMO for superheavyweights the central room should be made at least 30 x 30 ft, possibly up to 36x36. Keep in mind the original Robot Wars arena was 32x48.

I'm glad you like my housebot design, though!

Dr. Cadaver really captures the feel of the old Robot Wars housebots. Kind of a cross between Sir Killalot and Dead Metal, with a unique theme. I absolutely love it.

I was worried that might be an issue. It's supposed to be very small, but workable. I think I'm going to bump it up a little bit before the actual tournament starts.
