Bot-O-Rama 2016

Finally, an ARC Tournament for the sub-light classes! All the fun of big bots, but without the expense, back injuries trying to lift your robot off a dolly, or original tournament names!

STATUS AND SCHEDULE:

Sign-Ups are closed!

Writing Sign-ups are closed!

Sign-ups will close At 11:59:59 PM on Saturday, February 20th AT THE LATEST. If there are 16 entrants, they will close earlier.

Brackets and fight cards will be posted At 11:59:59 AM on Monday, February 22nd AT THE LATEST. If sign-ups close earlier, the tournament may start earlier if the participants agree.

I still need writers (preferably at least one with experience writing ARC matches because I haven't done this before).

Arena: The arena will be a 24ft by 24ft square, with a flat steel floor, and has an 8ft high ceiling. No active hazards are present. However, two "dead zones" exist on either side of the arena at 90 degrees from the starting squares: these are 4 feet wide, 2 feet deep, and separated from the main arena by a 2 foot high gate (these double as the arena doors when a match is not in progress). Some robots may also become stranded on the arena kickplates.

Posted Image

ENTRANTS AND FORMAT:

First of all, the general RP rules, e.g. don't counter other peoples' strategy, don't start drama, don't post novels in the RP section, apply.

Each participant will enter a robot in each of three weight classes: Hobbyweights (12 lb), Featherweights (30 lb), and Sportsman (30 lb). The first two are normal combat classes, but Sportsman robots have a couple additional rules (see below).

RPs will be due Saturdays (NOT Sundays) at 11:59:59 PM PST. Results and fight cards will be posted by 11:59:59 AM on Mondays, but if possible will be posted Sunday evenings.

A total of sixteen participants will be allowed. First-come first-serve, with "come" meaning actually entering three robots AFTER registration is opened, not just saying "I'd like to enter." Writers can enter, but are forbidden from writing their own matches, and ideally should avoid writing matches where they will face the winner in the next round if they win their match.

The tournament will consist of two phases. First will be a Divisions Phase during which the robots in each class will be randomly assigned to groups of four, and each group will function as Round Robin. After three rounds, the top two robots from each group will be assigned to a single-elimination playoffs phase with a third-place tiebreaker. The 1st-place and second-place finishers from each group will always be placed on opposite sides of the bracket, so two robots from the same group will not fight each other again until the final round.

The twelve robots eliminated in the group stage and first playoff round in each class will also be randomly assigned to one of two six-robot rumbles. For each class, one rumble will occur during the second playoff round and one will occur during the final round.

Most likely each round of the Groups phase will be split over two weeks. However, I'll try to change the group order around to avoid people having weeks when they don't have any fights.

Here's what the tournament will look like:

Week 1-6: Groups (4 matches per class, 12 total)
Week 7: Playoffs 1 (4 matches per class, 12 total)
Week 8: Playoffs 2 (2 matches per class plus one rumble, 9 total)
Week 9: Finals (1 Grand Final, one Third-Place Playoff, and one rumble per class, 9 total).

RULES:

Rules are based off of this ruleset, with the following addenda:

1A: Robots using "omnidirectional" drive systems including swerve drive, mecanum wheels, and kiwi drive, but not including "melty brain" systems, will have their effective torque and traction scores reduced by 1 point each.

6Ia: Two weapons powered by the same motor on the same axle will only have no stat reduction if the weapons are rigidly coupled, i.e. they rotate in the same speed and direction. Weapons spinning in opposite directions will have their stats reduced as if they were on different axles. Also, any flywheel-powered weapon where the flywheel can be used to strike an opponent (e.g. Warrior Clan) will be treated as two weapons powered by the same actuator. This does NOT apply to weapons where they flywheel cannot strike an opponent (e.g. Magneato).

6Ac: The attacking power of a "smart thwack" robot will be determined by its weapon score, and its translational speed will be determined by its speed score. Spinup time will be similar to that of a spinner with the same power. Thwackbots capable of operating both as conventional and as "melty brain" thwackbots have a primary control mode designated by their weapon stat. If the weapon stat is zero, the robot's primary control mode is conventional; it will be restricted to a speed of 1 in melty mode, and its spinup time will be limited by traction just like a conventional thwackbot. If the robot's weapon stat is nonzero, the robot's primary control mode is "melty"; in normal mode its speed is determined by its speed stat. (TIP: IF WEAPON = 0, YOU NEED TO SPEND POINTS ON TRACTION OR YOU'LL BE SLOW TO SPIN UP AND IMPOSSIBLE TO CONTROL. IF WEAPON > 0, TRACTION ONLY AFFECTS WHETHER YOU BOUNCE AROUND THE ARENA WHEN YOU HIT STUFF.)

6B: "Spinners" are restricted to weapons which use the kinetic energy of a spinning mass to deal impact damage. Rotary cutting weapons are covered in section 6G.

6Cb: The maximum height a vertical spinner can throw an opponent is equal to half the weapon power in feet. Vertical spinners do not deal additional impact damage when the opposing robot lands. Robots which are part of a multibot may be thrown higher at the writer's discretion.

6E: A crusher that exceeds the armor of the area it is piercing by 3 or more has the potential to embed the claw in the opponent and subsequently lift it off the ground a la Razer. When doing this, it acts as a lifter with a power of 1.

6G: Cutting weapons, including saws, drills, and chainsaws, are governed by the following rules:
i: a single-degree of freedom "arm" holding a cutting weapon only requires 1 weapon power to function.
ii: cutting weapons do NOT receive any weapon armor bonus regardless of their power. high-hardness sawblades are fragile: treat with with care.
iii: damage is dealt according to the following rules:
Flat Surface Damage -

0 - No damage: The saw or drill skitters over the armor or is stopped by it.

1 - Minor Damage: The saw or drill scrapes over the armor and stops without penetrating fully. No chance of a knockout.

2 - Average Damage: The saw or drill creates a small hole or shallow cut after extended contact with the same spot.

3 - Significant Damage: A significant cut is formed. Wheels may have their treads shredded or ripped off, compromising their function, and exposed belts or chains may be severed.

4 - Major Damage: Deep cuts are formed, with repeated attacks compromising the integrity of armor and allowing internal components to be damaged.

5+ - Catastrophic Damage: Every attack threatens a knockout due to internal damage. Armor will be severely cut, and structural members may be cut through.

Finally, robots in the Sportsman class are restricted by additional rules:

7A: All entrants must have an active weapon. Thwackbots and melties don't count.

7B: The power of spinners is limited to 5. This applies to any flywheel-powered weapon where the flywheel can be used to attack an opponent, but does NOT apply to rotary cutting weapons e.g. saws.

7C: Any device capable of removing an opponent's wheels from the arena floor must be integral to an active weapon. In other words, a wedge-shaped robot where the wedge is a lifter is okay, as is a dustpan on a sawbot which has the purpose of holding the victim in place while the saw causes damage. On the other hand, you can't have a back wedge which has the sole function of pushing an opponent around. SMALL forks, outriggers, or wedge-shaped skids are also acceptable provided they are not capable of removing the drive wheels of a reasonable opponent from the arena floor (if you design a robot with a 1mm ground clearance and get high-centered on someone's outriggers, that's your own fault).

7D: The purpose of the Sportsman class is to promote creative designs which would be non-feasible in "open" weight classes. Attempts to skirt the spirit of the class (e.g. building a pushybot with a useless 1 power weapon like Tornado did in Series 7 of Robot Wars) will result in disqualification.

MATCH JUDGING CRITERIA:
All matches will be judged on a 15-point scale, with 5 points each for damage, aggression, and strategy.
Damage and aggression will be scored as detailed in section 15.2 of the Robogames Combat Ruleset. However, note that damage scores will be a slightly different:

A 3-2 score will be awarded when both robots have suffered nearly the same level of damage but one is slightly more damaged than the other, with the judges deciding which robot has sustained slightly more damage.

A 4-1 score will be awarded when one robot suffers at least minor damage and the other suffers major or worse damage, or when one robot has suffered cosmetic damage and the other has suffered at least significant damage.

A 5-0 score when one robot suffers nothing more than trivial damage, and the other is at least significantly damaged, or when one robot has suffered major or massive damage and the other is no more than cosmetically damaged.

Strategy will reflect control of the match, effective use of weapons, and general skilled operation of one's robot.

And, to start things off...

here's Team Instant Regret.

Bonk! (Hobbyweight):

Posted Image

Speed: 5
Traction: 2
Torque: 2
Armor: 8 (+1 weapon support forks)
Weapon: 13

Bonk! is a vertical spinner with a custom in-hub brushless motor spinning its drumette at over 8000 rpm. It has a top speed of 9 MPH,
and is fully invertable. If the weapon is spinning, then when turned on its side the weapon will hit the floor, righting the robot.
If not, then one drive wheel will still touch the floor, allowing the robot a little mobility.

Vorpal Bunny (Featherweight):

Posted Image

Speed: 4
Traction: 2
Torque: 1
Armor: 7
Weapon: 16

Vorpal Bunny is a mid-cutter with an immensely powerful weapon: a 9 lb bar that spins at 3000 rpm.
However, this power comes at a price: the drivetrain is comparatively slow at only 7 MPH and the armor is thin.
The wheels are protected by a pair of UHMW wheelguards: in an impact these will flex or tear off without deforming permanently and
risking jamming the drivetrain.

Ahlspiess (Sportsman):

Posted Image

Speed: 5
Torque: 2
Traction: 3
Armor: 8 (+1 top plate)
Weapon: 12

Ahlspiess looks like an ordinary 4WD rammer, but its box-shaped chassis conceals a deadly secret: an enormously powerful custom-made gas spring exerting a peak force of nearly 5,000 lbs fires a sharpened 4340 steel spike with a stroke length of six inches. A set of modular ramming plates or spatula tongues on the front can be mounted with different standoff lengths. Shorter standoffs allow maximum penetration depth in poorly-armored opponents, while longer standoffs give the spear more time to accelerate, giving it the kinetic energy to penetrate thicker armor. A pair of winches retract the spear after each shot, taking around five seconds to do so. The robot can reach a top speed of 10 MPH, and a set of small, blunt "spikes" prevent it from getting stuck on its sides or back (unless the arena wall is involved). The top cover consists of a titanium sheet over a thicker garolite or carbon fiber layer, helping protect against hammers and axes.
"you can give a fuck, just don't give too much of a fuck. there's an optimal level of fuckiness, and if you exceed your fuck quota you'll burn out."

Fast 2WD rammer based on an IRL beetleweight design I've been working on. Wheels are exposed at the back to get off of wedges and lifters easier as well as allow self-righting by driving backwards and stopping abruptly. The top of the wedge acts as an anti-monstertrucking device and as a small backup wedge so that it isn't totally useless when inverted. Side spikes prevent ZK syndrome.

-Armor: 8 (+4 front wedge)

4WD overhead bar spinner. The front wedge is heavy, thick, and shock-mounted to take hits from other spinners, but the rest of the armor is practically paper-thin to make up for the weight. A removable hinged wedge extender can be employed for battles in which a static wedge simply won't do. Is not invertable and cannot self-right. My understanding of weapon armor is that the bonus (in this case +2) is applied to the base armor stat, so the bar's weapon armor would be 10 and therefore it shouldn't break down after a few hits.

Twin 2WD rear-hinged flippers, designated as Green and Blue. Each is 15 lbs of pure annoyance. Highly experimental stat distribution made possible by the penalties on spinners and lack of arena hazards. The idea here is for each part to be too small and fast to hit, and be able to juggle opponents in the air between them. I figure I can't be hammered or grabbed if my opponent is in the air the entire fight. Not OOTA capable. Each half can right the other by flipping it.

Sirocco is a bizarre robot which only has one wheel. To propel itself forward, it uses the design of its spinning weapon, which is shaped like a propeller, to generate thrust. The wheel attached to the rear of the machine turns it. It is 100% invertible and should be able to right itself should it get propped up on its weapon.

What Sling Shot is is a 4-bar flipper. However it is not your average 4-bar flipper! Instead of using compressed gas to fire the flipper, it uses a kinetic energy system which features a spinning drum and clutch system. The drum spins, storing kinetic energy. When the clutch is activated, it transfers the energy from the rear drum (the one that spins) into the front drum (which fires the flipper).

A good video demonstration of what this essentially looks like is here:

A vertical spinner with a nightmare-like disc. The front two wheels are powered, while the rear omni wheel coasts. There are counterweights at the back to offset the weight of the blade. The blade is run off two synchronized motors on each side that power belts to spin the weapon. If one of these motors fails, the drive belt can slip and allow the weapon to still spin from the other side's motor (albiet with less power and less balance).

It looks like a drum spinner, but the drum isn't a spinning weapon. The drum does spin, but only to change which part of the drum is being used. The weapon is actually more like a wide hammer with three different hammer heads. The spikes are meant for piercing armour and such, the round ended nubs are for warping armour and structure, and the bars are for jamming up weapons, spinning or otherwise.. The arms have 360 degrees of rotation and can be used to flip the robot over if it ends up upside down.

2 wheel drive, big scary spikes (removable), pitchfork style flipper arm to better facilitate getting under opponents. the orange plate behind the flipper is not a wedge (it doesnt touch the ground), it's just there to make sure the robot doesnt flop forwards when I activate the flipper. rear end has a thwacking tail (removable - when it is removed, ballast is added to the orange plate in order to make the front heavier, & therefore wedgier). can self right.

flipper is spring powered, retracted in a little over a second by a very powerful winch. there were too many hammers, so I had to make it faster :v:

2 wheel drive brick of a push bot. Lots of armor on the steel plow in the front, thus a lot of it's weight is up front, allowing it's plow to scrape the ground. Can work if flipped, but the wedge becomes a different angle. Essentially made to be a fast armored brick to wear out opponents.

2 wheel drive undercutter painted to look like a miniature lawnmower. Wide wheel base allows for as little gyro-silliness as possible. Can work inverted.

Sportsman: Hundred Dollar Dustpan

4 wheel drive Dustpan flipper similar to my FRR entry, D.U.D.E. However this rendition has a bit of a better engineered flipper. If flipped, the back wheels can touch the ground. Can self right given enough time. Flipper is capable of tossing 35+ lbs, so expect bot to be flying. Magnets are also used on the bottom of the dustpan to bring front dustpan as low as possible. This bot has a pretty centered weight distribution. A lot of the weight is in the back on the tires, allowing for full traction/torque but a considerable about is also on the dustpan and flipper assembly. With the help of magnets, the whole bot is perfectly centered so that it has max traction and ground clearance.

Team Vertigo's entries for Bot-O-Rama (l-r) Nurse Killjoy, Annoying Wasp and Feathergo.

Posted Image

Hobbyweight - Annoying Wasp

A invertible 2WD robot with a spinning, undercutting 1kg bar going at 2000rpm and is designed to damage the wheels and skirts of it's opponents. Armour made from aluminium, weapon made from titanium.

Speed: 5 | Traction: 4 | Torque: 3 | Weapon: 11 | Armour: 7

Featherweight - Feathergo

A robot with a vertical 2kg spinning axe with a large front scoop to get underneath opponents and flip them. 2WD and invertible with roll bars on the side to stop it getting stuck. Can also self right to the correct side by reversing and then suddenly stopping, much like an axlebot's attack (all the weight is at the bottom of the correct side). Made from polycarbonate and titanium.

Speed: 6 | Traction: 4 | Torque: 2 | Weapon: 10 | Armour: 8

Sportsman - Nurse Killjoy

A robot with a hydraulic crusher with a flamethrower installed in a gap behind the beak, allowing it to burn it's opponent's internal parts when pierced. A small hook on top of the beak also allows the crusher to lift its opponent off the ground. The front wedge has zero ground clearance by using a hinge between the front wheels and the chassis (explained here). Omni-wheels are at the rear so the robot steers around the front wheels so the crusher is more accurate. Wings on crusher for self-righting.

Speed: 6 | Traction: 3 | Torque: 4 | Weapon: 12 | Armour: 5

Shameless rip-off of Dark Pounder Low 2WD bot with a small one-toothed drum in front. Wheels are placed near the front for better turning. Low and wide shell prevents other spinners getting a good bite on it. Very well armoured. No srimech.

Speed: 4
Traction: 3
Torque: 1
Armour: 9
Weapon: 13

It's Towering Inferno, only with hammers that can actually do damage! Both hammers are powered separately. Song that inspired the name. :v:

Speed: 4
Traction: 4
Torque: 1
Armour: 6
Weapon: 15 (10 for each hammer)
