XD I am soo happy. Today, as you guys already know, I am OBSESSED with gardening. My vegetable garden has thankfully thrived beautifully. So I found out today that I could help pumpkin, watermelon, and zucchini growth by hand-pollinating the flowers. Turns out those three have male and female flowers, by which means the female needs the male's pollen to produce fruit. O.O I was a little dumbstruck once I read that, but I understand now. Luckily, I didn't NEED to hand-pollinate (HP) the zucchini - I found a baby zucchini growing already! Watermelon sound a bit difficult, the female flowers open for around a day and then close back up for good, so you have to catch them quickly. Of course if you don't you can just "as gently as possible" ease the petals off to pollinate it, helping the little watermelon along The pumpkins, however...I believe the male flowers grow very abundantly at first so when the females arise, there are enough suitors for each of them, by which hopefully each of them will produce pumpykins! We're gunna have the best Halloween decorations of all. A pumpkin with tomato eyes, a carrot mouth, and lettuce hair XD Nonetheless, I also found out that tomato plant flowers are both female and male, and the only thing needed for it to bear fruit is to be shaken up, which can be easily done with a good breeze. They are one of the easiest vegetables to grow along with lettuce and basil. But yes, CELEBRATIONS! We will have pumpykins by Halloween definitely. The watermelon and zucchini will probably be finished up by Thanksgiving, too. And the carrots, lettuce, basil, and tomatoes should be done...say end of month? Yeah. ![]() |
