Character Name (first and last): Marrain D’Busay Age: 21 Caste: witch Social Status: aristocrat Birthright: purple dusk Offering: green Race: short-lived Raej Birth Territory: Raej terreille
Starting Money: 770
Appearance: Her strawberry blonde hair falls in luxuriant natural curls to frame a pretty face. Deep green eyes reflect the sadness in her short life and the hardness she had to embrace to deal with it. Her smile, though bright, is not quite radiant, as if there is something holding her back.
Her gait and posture reflect training for a court, but there is a slight hunch also perhaps reflecting a withdrawal from the world. She in no way tries to stand out preferring to remain in the background. She doesn’t hide her attractiveness but doesn’t advertise it either.
Personality: Marrain is timid and wary. She has that distance that suggests she feels any who approach her want to take something form her. She is not used to kindness and doesn’t offer any either. Hers is a hard world and she is only surviving in it, not seeking to change it. It is useless to pry into her life before coming to Kaeleer for she wont discuss it.
The only times in which she appears open is when plying her trade, and only then because what man would want shy, timid and frightened prostitute? In truth there are some men that prefer that and she would rather not have anything to do with them. So with a perfunctory smile, and an uninterested sway in her hips she goes to work.
Likes: Dislikes: Bad Habits: Fears:
History: Marrain was born in Raej to parents unsuited to the role. Her parents seemed unsuited to any role, unsuccessful in nearly anything they tried. They would blame anyone except themselves including Marrain. After a time they came to blame their little girl for nearly everything. First comes the blame then the abuse.
The D’Busey’s constantly tried to improve their lot in the Raejian court but deserved little more than the thirteenth circle afforded them because of their family history. It was not a position they merited. After a time, it was hard to justify even that lowly rank and they were dismissed from the court a few years before Blythe came to power. Their fall couldn’t be aided by the regime change for they had already left Raej to seek fortune elsewhere. Often their fortune was whatever Marrain could earn, neither parent deigning to stoop to the jobs they were qualified for.
After a ear of falling further they heard rumors that some Terreillians had gone to Kaeleer to a thing called the service fair. They had begun the process of bribing for the information and then passage through a dark gate when both were slain over a dispute concerning the appropriate bribe for an unscrupulous official. Marrain was able to continue and eventually made it through the gate to the service fair. No one took her. On the day after it’s close she had to take whatever offer was first made to her. Typically, her offer was not a pleasant one from one of the new established red moon houses. She eventually found out her new masters had arranged so she would get no other offers during the service fair. She has resigned herself to her new life in little terreille, seeking only to make do from day to day.
Family and Friends:
Offering Post The night in the fog had shaken her. Prior to that she was content to wear her birthright until what she hoped was her short life ended. If she wore a darker jewel she would probably only last longer before she expired. It was a very fatalistic, but why shouldn’t she feel that way? If the darkness actually had a plan for her, she would reject it altogether for her life had been miserable.
There was one small problem with her plan. As she ran, terrified, on the fog covered street of Goth from a killer she couldn’t see, she wanted to live, and by living she meant make something of herself, something more than a whore. She dressed as well as she could, recalled her limited aristo training and went to the dark altar of Little Terreille.
The priestess showed what to do and offered to hold her clothes. Marrian’s eyes flashed with a bit of anger and the priestess retreated. She didn’t want any reminder of her profession while she made her offering. She placed a towel down before the altar, said her prayers, cut her wrist, healed it careful not to drip on her dress, mixed it with the contents of the chalice and drank it down.
She was certain that with her luck she wouldn’t descend at all simply landing on her familiar purple dusk, but she floated past it. A little surprised she felt the opal approaching and was a little awed. Any that wore the opal were held in special stead by society as one of the few who wore a dark jewel. She would be more than happy to take the opal, but she floated past that one also. Marrian was in shock, the green? Impossible. How could the darkness waste a dark jewel on her when it played such games with her life? A green-jeweled witch that was nothing other than a whore living out a broken life as well as she could. Wouldn’t someone at the service had taken her if she had the potential to wear the green, instead of passing her by to be victimized on the day after the fair, when she had to take what ever was offered?
When she opened her eyes and saw the green jewel on the altar, she held her head and cried, not knowing what to make of her offering. She took up the jewel and held it to her still crying as she bound with it. Eventually, the bonding process calmed her and gave a new strength, a new inner fire. She was a green jeweled witch steeped in dark power and she had always been very skilled in craft. She was formidable. She had another realization. No one in her red moon house was as dark as she was, and they wouldn’t know she was darker either. She would appear bitter as always, and tell them she didn’t descend. They would believe her. They expected it, but she would have to see about getting a web to disguise the jewel at some point to complete the charade. When those that preyed on light-jeweled witches came for her they would receive a surprise.
She left the altar with renewed purpose. No longer would she be kicked around by fate, the darkness, others, whatever. She wouldn’t simply wait to die anymore.
