The sunlight was like someone had sneaked into her room and was prying her eyelids open with much gusto and without taking no for an answer. Didn’t the sun realize she had been plagued with nightmares all night? Didn’t the sun know that when the witchlight went out and the silky shadows of darkness fell across her bed Rhydra laid there listening to the sounds and imagining heavy footsteps approaching her bed? The same faces swam in her dreams, but they were always too foggy to make out. Harsh fingers that pried her thighs open and even harsher bodies that hurt her. It was not uncommon in the morning that when the hearth witches who served as the Celestine’s family maids came in to make her bed that they almost tripped with what they saw. On good nights her sheets were only tangled irreparably into a giant ball of linen. Her comforter thrown away as it felt too stifling and as if someone was holding her down, and her pillows strewn around the room some with rips and tears allowing the feathers to coat her room like new fallen snow. On bad nights the white linens were stained with blood from where she scratched so hard at her nighttime attackers her nails had broken and sometimes ripped. On those mornings, before she readied herself for the day, she had to visit the Healers. She knew Symon worried and he could not pass this phenomenon off on not having a male figure early in her childhood. She wondered where she was able to dream up these horrid things. Certainly they were not real? She always laughed at that. It couldn’t be real because if it were she would certainly remember them in her waking, and after she woke up from sleeping the dreams once again faded away just as the shadows faded under the sunlight. It had been a good night and so when she woke up and gave a cheerful hello to the hearth witches they were relieved to find no blood. She slid off the side of her bed and took a few unsteady steps toward her private bathroom where she would ready herself for the day. Once finished in there she dressed in a comfortable but tight-fitting dress and had one of her maids attending to her help with her hair. When it was down, which wasn’t very often, her hair reached the base of her spine and now had to be elaborately styled in curls and braids on the top of her head so that she didn’t end up with a sore neck. Once that was finished she selected her opal ring and matching pendant and slipped a pair of black slippers on. Symon would probably be at breakfast as would the other members of her Court and so she started down the stairs toward the dining room. Celestine manor wasn’t huge compared to the other Territories around Nharkhava, especially when they had had to downscale when Rhydra’s grandmother had let their trading contracts slip, but it was still sizable and could fit her most important Court positions comfortably. She gave Symon a bright smile and was troubled to see no one else at the breakfast table. She sat down and waited for their meals to come along. “Good morning, Symon, you slept well I trust?” she murmured as a bowl of fruit was brought for her. He smiled ruefully not stepping into the same trap as he used to. “No better than you, m’lady,” he replied. And so began the careful tango known as breakfast in the Celestine household. |
