Rhaevin stepped outside to try and calm her nerves. The sun was almost gone. Soon they would light the candles and begin the ritual that would carry Rhaevin and her cousin to Terreille and a new life. Her arms chaffed. She tugged at her sleeves, making sure they were in place and just looked to the sky. Her nerves were dancing on edge. She was still convinced that Soleil or Madam Yolene would show up any moment and drag her back to the family manor. She could only imagine the punishment that would come from this. She would be begging to be whipped, she knew.

She shuddered to think. She still had her eyes cast to the sky and took a few steps before she stumbled. So nervous she hadn't been looking whree she was going. Hissing, she looked at her palm and was startled to realize she'd scraped ti until blood flowed. She carefully knocked the stones out of it and almost pressed two fingers to the cut to heal it before an old legend rose up in her mind.

A wish offered with blood is a prayer to the Darkness.

She was no Priestess, but... anything at this point. *Please let us get safely away... I don't want to go back to her. I don't want to be alone.* Even her prayer sounded breathy. She shook her head and healed the wound, turning to reenter the altar. She was acting strangely. Fanciful thoughts of prayers and wishes would do her no good in the long run. So she let out a small sigh and paused in the doorway to watch the sun finish setting. Soon now.

Air smells warm...smells good. Pheadra walked down the east side of the mountain he had called home his entire life. He had decided that since no Arcerians wanted to play, he would go away, find a new mountain, new friends. Play. Friends. Phaed's thoughts were so centered, he failed to notice the rough, pointy rocks that had fallen from the trails above. The rocks that he was rapidly approaching on the narrow trail.

Phaedra jumped suddenly, the reaction to pain sending him feet into the air. Pain! Danger! Phaed snarled loudly as he landed, forcing himself not to jump again as he landed on the sharp rocks. Blood ran from the tears on his footpads. He snarled quietly, then felt immensly sad. I want go down there...There are people there...But rocks in way of my play...

*I don't want to be alone.*

Phaed's head snapped up, towards the human dens, to the large tall den by them. He had not heard this voice before. It was not a friend, not someone Phaed had played with before. This was human, a female. Phaed did not like humans, but if he had to choose, he would pick a female. And he wanted to play. She no want to be alone. I want friend. I will play with her. This decided, Phaed started the final descent to the village.

Phaed took a cautious step forward, accepting the pain as he let the Warlord Prince in him take over his thoughts. The pain became as nothing to Phaedra, much like the cold snows of Glacia. I will get to her.

After clearing the rocks, Phaed broke into a full sprint, the pain forgotten as happier thoughts entered his furry mind. We will play hide and seek, and pounce, and stalk, and... His step was light as he sought the female that had called to him. Phaed avoided running through the village, even though it was approaching night. No reason to be caught. It was like his sire had told him; when you no know where you are, you always play stalk and pounce.

Phaedra walked to the big building from the woods behind it, thinking it was a good place to start, while the sun went down. There was only one person outside the den, a short female walking towards inside. Phaed was sure without knowing why that she was the one that had asked him to play. Phaed watched her for a moment from the shadow of the big den, but she was walking towards it and he couldn't let her go in. Phaed called his favorite toy, his biggest string, from the secret place, then jumped in front of her, blocking the entrance. You said you wanted to play. Phaed bobbed his haed, making the string move like a snake. He loved his favorite string. Do you want to play?

Rhaevin was nearly inside when she looked up into the face of a large, furry feline predator. Her heart leaped into her throat and she stopped dead in her tracks quite abruptly. What in the world was that thing? She sensed the furry intelligence brushing against her mind about the same moment she stumbled backwards and her footing was lost. For the second time in only a few minutes, she hit the ground, this time her voice lost deep within her throat with a scream that wouldn't pass her lips. Her spike of fear would probably be enough to summon Chansity, and the moment she realized that she clamped down on the fear and shock. If she was about to become dinner she wouldn't bring anyone else down on her.

It never occurred to her to use defensive shields. She'd been punished for attempting to use Craft. She wasn't even wearing the Rose right now. She hadn't openly worn it ever, and it hadn't occurred to her to put it on when they'd made a break for the altar. Now she was on her back, a large cat was near her, and she was still trying to process the fact that it had spoken to her via a spear to distaff thread.

Play? It wanted to... play? Was that very-large-cat for food? She pushed herself up to look at the cat that hadn't moved much and looked him over. She was struck by how beautiful he was. A rich white coat, striped elegantly. He was so beautiful... but she wasn't oblivious to the power that lived in him. That fur was stretched over hard muscle, and every breath he took was a promise of the strength of him. He could snap her in half in less time than she could consider screaming.

*Play?* she tried to reach across that link again. *Sure... I would like to play.* she replied finally, hoping she didn't sound as dumbstruck as she felt.

Phaedra watched with interest when the female jumped into the air, not unlike him, and landed hard on the ground. He didn't know what to think about that, but Phaed thought she was just excited to play. His tail flicked once, happily. She looked at him quite intently for a moment, which Phaed assumed was to figure out how best to play tug with his favorite string. But she couldn't play tug on the ground...

*I Help you up.* Phaed didn't wait for permission, or for anything. He had decided that this female knew how to play tug, and she was waiting for the right moment to grab the string away from him and win. Phaed couldn't let her have his favorite string. So, he put it back in the secret place, then walked swiftly over to the human. Reaching her side, Phead noticed in passing that this female was very small for her age. She was wearing loose human fur, and there was plenty for him to bite without hurning her. So he lowered his head and opened his mouth, and grabbed her shirt with his teeth. With a yank, she was on her feet and Phead was away from her, so he could get his favorite string out again, to play before she had to leave.

Phaed got the string out of the secret place again, and waved it in front of the female. He made it hit her palm, then jerked it away from her, to make her grab for it. She didn't move. She must know how to play tug. *Play now?*

Rhaevin had just been dragged to her feet by a very large cat who apparently wanted to play with a very large string. She was reminded of a litter of kittens tumbling over a ball of yarn and couldn't help the smile and the laughter than came from it. Apparently all cats liked string. She could only imagine where this was going to go. She caught the string in her hand, clamping the other down on it and gave it a tug. Not so hard as to hurt his teeth; she was concerned she would yank a tooth out if she tried too hard.

She was still trying to figure out where the cat had come from. She wasn't aware of anything of this size native to Dharo! Wolves, sure, Dharo was infamous for it's wolves. But not big cats. This feline was quite a bit bigger than even the occasional cougar that came down out of the mountains near Asakavi and made their way to the borderlands of Dharo. And this wasn't the border by any means.

*What's your name?* she asked as she gave a tug on the rope. *Mine is Rhaevin.* Her name was pronounced exactly like the bird for which she was named. Rumor had it that her mother had seen a raven just before her child was born and thought it beautiful and named the girl after it. But that was probably just a rumor. Rhaevin didn't remember her parents. They'd been dead since she was an infant. The only parents she'd had was Madam Rhone, who was no kind of mother to her.

(OOC: Yes, this post contains Godmodding, but I got permission, to save a few posts...just read and enjoy.)

This human was either very good at tug, or very very bad. Phaed was reminded of his Sire, who always appeared to be very bad at tug. He would do weak tugs, then when you weren't ready, he would tug hard, and knock you over. Then he would take the string, as the prize. Phaed's Sire had more strings than anyone. He was good at tug. Perhaps this female also had many strings. Phaed knew how to find out. He purposely let his jaw loosen, let the rope all but slip out of his teeth. His eyes wandered, looking into the den behind him, the trees in front. Phaed thought he could see his old den, thought that was crazy. Den is far away now... Phaed was not sure how he felt about that. It was the only den he had known his whole life... but it was also where he had no friends to play with, no family. And that was all his...

Phaed shook his head lightly. No think about that. Besides, he still had to test the female, before she had to go. Humans can never play for long. But this one may be different. She was the first that had offered her name. Raven... Phaed was not sure the name fit the human female. After all, she was a human, not a bird. She didn't even have the wings some humans do. And this female seemed especially earthbound, like her wings had been clipped by something...or someone. Phaed's instinctive nature, the Warlord Prince inside of him, bristled a little at that. Females were to be nurtured, not clipped. Maybe name does work...Female just need chance to fly...and someone to catch if fall.

But this female wasn't interested in him...she hadn't even pet him. She just wanted a friend, someone to play with until she had to go. Which led Phaed back to his test. Phaed let his jaw slacken, let the rope all but fall out of his teeth. If the female was any good at tug, she would pull when she saw his attention was elsewhere, that his jaw had loosened.

Phaed felt the tugging a second too late to stop the rope from leaving his teeth. My favorite string! Phaedra had not thought through his perfect plan through very well, and now the female had his favorite toy. Phaed felt himself rising to the edge even he leapt on the female, knocking her down again. His paws went to either side of her chest and his eyes looked right into hers. He wasn't riding the edge, not really, but he wanted his string. Even though she had won it, Phaed wanted his string. *Give back favorite string. Now.* Phaed growled, to warn the female that if she wanted to play anymore, she would give it back...soon.

Rhaevin felt the fear as if she was very far from it. She had learned to lock fear and pain away as best she could, to emulate Jozuah in that, to avoid giving Soleil too much satisfaction in the ways she hurt her kin. The name, *SOLEIL* summoned the fear closer and she whimpered, eyes closed and tilting her head to side. Suddenly seven hundred or so pounds of Arcerian cat was far less terrifying than memories that filled her with increasing speed.

She yelped and inhaled sharply before she forced herself to look up and into those feline eyes. He wasn't angry. Not really. She knew that, somehow. Without considering the consequences, she raised an empty hand and ran a hand down his neck and scratched gently. *I'm sorry. You can have your string back. I'll understand if you don't want to play with me anymore.* She would, even expected it. She'd never had a real playmate, and this cat seemed irked with her. She was no good at tug.

She waited, patient and submissive, until he would move and let her up. She didn't fight, she gave in, and despite not fearing for her life after that initial surprise she wouldn't fight him. She didn't have much, if any, fight left in her.

Phaedra's current position, standing over a scared human female while he rode the killing edge, terrified him. But the fear he felt coming from the human, this Rhaevin, enraged him more. Why was she afraid? I no want hurt female. Why she think I hurt? I only want favorite string. She think me is mean? maybe I should be mean... Phaedra's anger was swiftly forming into rage, and he felt the Opal glow with strength as he dived into the abyss. He reached the level of the Opal and turned, bringing he power up swiftly but not explosively. He hated, hated the female for fearing him, for making him kill her. Phaedra was consumed by his hate, as he opened his jaws to reveal teeth glimmering with Opal edges.

The thin arm that stroked his neck snapped Phaedra from the killing edge like nothing ever had before. The trembling hand that gently scratched his skin calmed his heart and before Phaedra could think the Power he had summoned was returned to the Darkness. For Phaedra knew that touch, that soft caress. He had given and recieved it before, back home. It was thank you. It was goodbye. This female, this Rhaevin, was not afriad of death. She was even thanking him for it. Phaedra's shame was overcome by his confusion. Why human want to die? He let loose a psychic robe that tasted the first level of the human's thoughts and feelings. A name whipped through the human's mind, and the fear it left in it's wake was palpable. Soliel. Who is Soliel? Not important. The human was scared. Phaed was taken by a desire to comfort and protect so strong he had no intention of fighting it. Every instinct screamed at him to get this female to a safe place and lick her until she felt better. They screamed for him to use that delicate probe to send thoughts of Home, of a nice cave full of meat and heat and kittens. But he could not. This was not a scared Arcerian female, this was a human female. Suddenly Phaedra's favorite string seemed insignificant compared to the need to help this female. But he did not know how. He couldn't do anything by himself. But there were other humans, inside the big den behind them. If little human was afriad, maybe they could help. Phaedra had to get thier attention. Even though he was told never to do this, he knew he had to.

Phaedra crouched down, his chest touching the human's. With a quick lick on her cheek, for luck, Phaed jumped and landed yards away, facing the big human den. Phaed knew this growl had to be louder than any other growl he had ever done, because he didn't know how big this den was, or where the people were inside. But they had to hear, so they could make the female feel better. He arced he back and drew in as much air as he could hold, and then used Craft to project his voice. The effect, Phaedra thought, was quite acceptable, and the echo from the building hurt his ears. He hoped they heard him.

The roar rattled Rhaevin's bones. She clenched her teeth and her eyes, feeling that sound somewhere in the pit of her stomach. What was going on? Had she made him angry? He'd licked her and then roared something terrible! He was going to bring Chansity and the Priestess down on them, and Rhaevin did not feel that they would be quite as entranced by the large cat. She pushed herself up on her elbows before scrambling to her feet. She took a hesitant step towards him before she shook her head. If she didn't get inside and stop Chansity and the Priestess, they might hurt him, and she couldn't bear being the cause of him being hurt. So she gave him a sad little smile before she turned heel and darted back up the rise to the altar, stepping inside quickly and closing the door behind her.

*I have to go, Phaed.* she called after her, mind to mind. *If I don't, my kin might hurt you, and I don't want you to get hurt.* she said, hoping he would understand. *I'm going away in a little bit, to a place very far away.... I wish I could see you again, though. I enjoyed playing with you.* she sent, and along the connection she let him see how fond of him she had grown even in that short time. She kept moving, though, hoping to make it to the altar room before the others came running. Soon they would be on their way to Raej, and she would never see Kaeleer again. It was sad to consider that she wouldn't be able to see Phaed again. Sad that she would find a friend like that just as she was leaving.

As she entered the altar room she saw that she was right on time. They were leaving. She collected herself and closed her eyes, gathering her courage and choking back on the urge to have a panic attack. She couldn't indulge, she had to be brave for Chansity's sake, so they could get to Raej and start a real life for themselves. As she stepped towards the rippling Gate, she sent one last thought to the kindred she'd befriended: *Good bye, Phaedra... don't forget me.*
