I have a 2003 Dakota 4.7l 2wd with 114k miles. I am having an issue with my trans, 45RFE. Whenever I am driving and I rev the engine there is some weird noise coming from right below the accelerator pedal, which is right around the transmission area. It sounds like something is not linking up right and/or maybe slipping. From what I can feel there is no performance decrease. The transmission is shifting fine even when I acclerate hard and let it hard shift. The transmission is up to capacity, the filter and fluid are changed every summer. Also, when I speed up on the highway, the noise is barely noticeable cuz of the highway noise. Whenever I shift it into neutral the sound goes away soo it has to be the transmission, the torque converter, and/or some linkage somewhere. I need help with this cuz I really can't afford to replace the transmission on a college student budget?!? I am hoping there is a quick fix?!? |

Daimler Chrysler made a boo-boo when they were making some of these trucks by putting too small a filter in some of the trannys for the fluid, thereby causing a false up to level reading on the stick. In reality, you're about a quart less than you should be in some trucks. This causes the fluid to foam and cause either noise, jerking, or other misc. annoyances while driving, specifically while turning and/or accelerating. Try this: put an extra quart of fluid in the tranny and see if the noise stops. The extra quart won't hurt it, and if it solves your problem then hell, happy days. Info from a transmission specialist, specializing in dodge/jeep/chrysler transmissions, for all those interested. |

what type of noise? like a squeal, clunk, grind, bang, knock? also, does this happen when youre cruising and then drop the hammer and make it kickdown? give us some more specifics on it and maybe we can help you, I seriously doubt a quart low on oil is making it noisy. low oil will make it slip. |

Hmmm I will def see if it is low! I remember a couple month ago I had to put a quart of trans fluid cuz my engine was stalling due to my torque converter not getting enough fluid which I think was the reason..... It's kinda a grinding/knocking sounds, really hard to describe, I am going to take a video of it this weekend. I am to to have to get a friend to hold a camera and somehow get close to the trans to record the noise lol |
