Hi everyone. 1st post here, did a search but found nothing. I just bought a 2002 4X4 4.9 auto from an auction and it won't be here until day after tomorrow, but would like to start getting thoughts together for swapping out the engine for a VW diesel and the tranny for a manual. The diesel is smaller than the V8 so fitting should not be an issue and it will be modded to 240HP and 450lbft so power won't be either. What are my tranny options beside an NV3500, if any? It must come from a 4X4, right? And what gearing options are available, sure I'll probably need to change that too.

If you want to stick with a dakota transmission, the NV3500 would be your best bet, however, if you want to keep the tranny behind the VW motor, you could always go with a divorced transfer case.

The VW tranny wouldn't work because it is front wheel drive and fits 'laterally' between the front wheels whereas now the engine will be mounted 'longitudinally'. Besides, although the VW manuals are great boxes, a loaded Dakota pulling a boat might be a bit much for one. How does a divorced transfer case work?

I didnt think about the front wheel drive part of the VW drivetrain lol oops. The divorced transfer case basically is a seperate unit from the transmission, and the transmission will connect to the transfer case via a driveshaft. The NV3500 would probably be your best option, but you may need to look into upgraded input and output shafts for the transmission as it is not used to handling that much torque
