I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I've got 2001 quad cab with the 450fe tranny. My wife calls me up says she can't get it into reverse. I went to check it out and it actually won't go into reverse. Drive and all the shifting b/w gears is perfectly fine, but when I shift into reverse I can hear the solenoid (i'm assumming that's what the noise it) trying to shift the tranny over like always, and it does it for the same amount of time, reverse just never catches. I did go mudding this weekend and did have to get pulled out but it was nothing harsh and it drove perfectly fine for 2/3 days after. Anyone got any thoughts on this, any info would help. |

Is the truck warm? Is the fluid ok? What have you checked so far? |

Fluids fine, I noticed it when the truck was cold, but once warmed up it didn't make a difference. My wife said she started it and the first time it took forever to get into reverse, she drove accross town and when she went to reverse into a parking spot, nothing. |

Throwing any codes? Not really up on auto trannys but it could be one of the solenoids in the tranny are malfunctioning or a clogged filter from mudding. Neither one will require you to drop the whole tranny so it's not a big bill. |

gottr figured out. A great shop in town fixed it up for me. Turns out it was the end cover that the springs that the valves go up against. The screws came loose and the pressure distorted and bent the cover, letting the reverse valve actually fall out. Not to bad a fix, cost me little under $400 CAD (i'm up in the cold frozen north here) after the tax man including a tranny service, and he used the transgo shift kit fix it, so, major bonus there. One question though. He used all the internals of the shift kit because he likes the fact that it's beefier, but didn't put in the resistor (which is fine, I can do that myself). I've heard all the great reveiws of the kit, but i'm wondering if putting the resistor in will add anymore wear, or if it's not an issue. Firmer more performance like shifts would be great, but i'm not taking anyone off the line in a 4x4, so if it's gonna add anymore stress then i'd forget it. |

Trannys are sealed but dirt can get in through the seals or the vent tube. In fact I had a mud bogger Chevy 4x4 catch fire under the hood once because the vent tube got plugged up with mud and the pressure in the tranny had no where to go. The pressure released through the dip stick tube spewing transmission fluid onto the hot exhaust manifolds. Knew something was up when the underside of the truck started to glow. Stopped the truck, lifted the hood and started heaving slimy mud balls onto the engine to put it out. LOL OK, now that story time is over ... Glad you got it fixed. If it were me I'd forget about the resistor unless you want, or are going to need, the neck snapping shifts. It will stress things more. |
