Fuck I am pissed.

First question: Has anyone ever cracked or exploded their transfer case? I don't mean break the chain I mean the case itself.

Second question: What the hell would cause such a thing to happen?

Give me some answer then I will explain and take some pictures.

Thanks.

Evan.

I have had no problems with my truck at all in the last few months so this was one hell of a shock. I was pulling an empty trailer from Lubbock to Abilene to go pick up some furniture for a friend. The trailer I was pulling had no top an no back.

I had no problem leaving Lubbock, next I made it through Slaton just fine, next Post just fine. I am about 100 miles south of Lubbock doing 70mph when all of a sudden I think i have a blowout. I look in the rear view mirror and there is smoke coming from the right rear of the truck. I pull over to the shoulder and to my surprise find out its not a blow out but that there is T-case fluid all over the fucking place. I could clearly see where it had cracked but it was too hot to touch. So the tow truck comes and i get it home. I look under the truck last night and it looks as though it may be just the back half of the housing. But I bet there is more damage than that.

I was just curious and called the dealer wanting to know how much they charge for a new T-case and to install it. New T-case: $2k. Install $1800.

I will get some pictures later.

Ok so today i took my truck up to my buddies shop and started taking everything apart. Got the T-case out and boy it it crack. The whole back half of the housing is shot.

So we also found the culprit to the whole problem. The U-joint in the front of the shaft was totally destroyed. So bad that it torn part of the housing where the u-joint caps sit. So for a $140 I am getting new yokes put on both ends with new u-joints and its getting balanced. I apologize I dont have any pictures of the drive shaft yoke right now. But when I get it back and have my truck back I will take plenty of pictures so everyone can see the damage.

The U joint was bad enough to tear apart your transfer case but you didn't feel any vibration long before it happened? Usually a bad U joint will buzz or vibrate a vehicle like mad.

Didn't feel a damn thing. Wait till you see what it did to the yoke on the front of drive shaft.
