<_< This really isn't a modification but I'm sure it will help someone. If you've ever changed the oil and filter on your 4.7 Dakota you know how much of a PITA it is to get the oil filter off without making a mess. Here's a quick and easy solution to the problem: Loosen the filter off a bit then take a 2L Coke bottle with the bottom cut off and the cap on, and put it up through the hole and around the filter. Cut the bottle around a length that will allow the filter to bottom out on the angled edges at the top of the bottle (bottom when your using this method) but still have enough height to surround the filter to the top. That way your hands aren't choked up on the bottle really far and you can grasp the cap and angled section of the bottle to spin it off and lower it through the access hole. The reason for doing it this way is that if your hands are as big as mine you might not be able to lower the bottle, with the filter inside, through the hole if your hanging onto the side and not the lower section of the bottle. The plastic pop bottle is almost a perfect fit and plyable enough to grasp the filter and spin it off. Any oil that starts to spew from around the filter as your spinning it off will be caught in the bottle and not drip and collect around the splash shield. Spin the filter off, let it drop in the bottle and bring it out through the access hole. |

Great idea. My oil needs changing this week, so I'll give it a try. Why couldn't Dodge have put a funnel shaped thing around the filter area to catch that oil and direct it below the slash shield?

Can you throw a picture up of wht the bottle should look like after the cut? I am having trouble visualizing it. |

Pretty simple. A 2L plastic coke bottle with the cap on. Turn it upside down and cut the bottom off to make a funnel shape. Except this funnel has a cap on the end. Any plastic bottle will work as long as it surrounds the oil filter without too much space.

I hate to say it but my old S10 I had, there was a funnel under the oil filter to prevent the oil from doing that. As for the front end, if they did that they would ride like a truck (ya, theres a thought!) and the girls and Bommers would not buy them then. |

I do it a little differently. While funneling the oil isn't a bad idea... I say just cup it. Instead of using the top of the 2L bottle... use the bottom end... make the bottom end only tall enough to fit the whole filter inside it... unscrew the filter to the point that doing it with your hand is easy, take the part you've made and put it over it... then proceed to hold the bottom of the "bottom end of the 2L" and the filter and screw off... the oil goes around the filter and into the "bottom end of the 2L"... once you've screwed if off, you're done. Then use the TOP of the 2L bottle for a funnel for the new oil that you put INTO the motor. Paul |

Tried this and it works WONDERFUL!!!! I hated trying to clean all the oil up from ontop of the plastic piece. What a mess!! Now I dont have to. Thanks for the insight Alta Boy. YAAAABUDDY03, I like your idea of how to use the whole 2L bottle. |

I just let the truck sit for a couple hours before doing an oil change. That way only a little oil comes out if any.seems to work for me but I also have a hoist to use too. |

A good oil filter shouldn't let any oil drain back (out) of it. That would cause a lack of oil on the start up. The bitch of doing oil changes for me is the oil plug. Till I found these... ![]() http://www.y2kota.us/fumoto.html Oil changes are a lot cleaner now with the Fumoto Oil Drain Valve. Good solid brass construction for long life. This beats out the cheap after market ones by a long shot! c Part # F-106N. Just google "Fomoto Part # F-106N" on where to get them. |

I've modded my "gravel shield" or whatever it is by removing all the plastic clips, then using 4 bolts, 2 thru cross member pointing foreward, then 2 pointing down towards the ground from the frame. I used all existing holes where the clips were. You fish the bolts thru then slide on 2 push nuts on each bolt so they can't fall back into the crossmember and won't spin. THis takes a little bit of time to complete but Now i can change my oil quick and mess free. I also use the 2L bottle trick, I just use the bottom section, cut it an inch or so taller then your filter, bust it loose then put the bottle over it before it starts to drip. Like y2kota I have an oil drain valve, but mine is made by Fram. you unscrew a protective brass cover, then with one end of hose in a jug I screw the special fitting onto the valve, therefore oil is drained without using a drain pan strait into a bottle. If I do this when I have my truck on Jack stands while rotating my tires I can fit a 5gallon jug under there. |
