It can really vary, there doesn't seem to be any special rationalization on the part of Dodge. I have a 5.9, 46 RE, AWD T-case, friend has same motor and same T-case but a different tranny.

If you're still wondering what kind of Tranny you have, call a dealership and give your last 8 digits of your VIN to the parts and services department and they will be able to tell you basically anything about your truck

HOPE THAT HELPS :P

I also heard that the most common transmission with the 4.7L's were the 45RFE's. But don't quite me too much on that

Easiest way to narrow it down is go under your truck and count the number of bolts holding your Trans pan. 15 bolts and a deep fwd end pan is the 45RFE, or 545RE I believe. 14 bolts and a flat pan is the 46, 44, or 42RE's I believe. Again don't quite me toouch but that's what I have gathered from a bit of research
